Head Cheetah's Message
Families,
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, and the Connecticut Dyslexia Awareness Collaborative (CT-DAC) is inviting communities across the state to help build awareness and a shared understanding of dyslexia. In an effort to show our support we are asking everyone to Wear Red for Dyslexia Awareness on Friday, October 23! This is a great opportunity to raise awareness, promote understanding, and celebrate the importance of supporting all readers.
I hope you are able to enjoy the fall foliage this weekend! The colors are really beginning to pop!!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Joey and Jessica

Mrs. Evans’s Class Created a Tableau During A Wit & Wisdom Lesson
After reading the book, "The Color of His Own, " the class demonstrated the chameleon’s first attempt to change, where he remained on a leaf alone, but then changed colors to match the changing leaf. The second attempt shows how he met an older, wiser chameleon who said they could stay together. Finally, the class depicted how the two chameleons remained side-by-side and changed happily together. A tableau is another way for students to demonstrate their understanding.
Rotary Club Visits Grade 3
On Thursday, Grade 3 had a special assembly with members of the East Hampton Rotary Club. During this exciting visit, the Rotary Club gifted each of our third graders with personal dictionaries. This has become a beloved and long-standing tradition at Memorial. Thank you, EH Rotary!
PAWsitive Office Referrals
A PAWsitive office referral can be submitted to Mrs. Warner or Mrs. Bauer at any time when a staff member recognizes a student who has demonstrated a random act of kindness. These students earn a certificate, have their picture taken, and wear a pawprint sticker throughout the day so that everyone in the building knows they’ve earned a PAWsitive Office Referral.
Order of the Cheetah
Congratulations to Beth Haydu for being recognized with this week’s Order Of The Cheetah! Beth is a grade 3 teacher who goes above and beyond in service to our school community. In addition to hosting a student teacher this year, she also sits on several committees, including the Professional Development and Evaluation Committee, and the Positive School Climate Committee. Thanks for all you do, Beth!

PE
Hi everybody,
Our Preschool and Kindergarten students have been continuing to work hard with our classroom expectations of improving their fitness, strength, and flexibility. After finishing up our ball skills (using our feet) unit we have moved into our unit of eye- hand/body activities unit such as using foxtails, throwing and catching balls of different sizes and weights, and various movement/cooperative activities.
Our First, Second, and Third Graders have also been working hard with our classroom expectations of improving their fitness, strength, and flexibility. After finishing up our ball skills (using our feet) unit we have moved into our lacrosse unit. We have been learning how to throw, catch, pick up ground balls, and cradle, both individually and with a partner. As the children get older we incorporate different technical aspects to help with their success. In the event of rain, we have also played some indoor soccer games with our Grade 2 and 3 students. Our Grade 1 students on rain days have been working on movement activities and cooperative games.
Our 2nd and 3rd Graders are also actively participating in the mile run and Running Club with the Running Club Bulletin Boards inside the gym. Luckily we have not been inside very much with the nice weather so we are enjoying the fresh air and being outside on the fields.
The children have been doing great and improving nicely, they take pride in their accomplishments and improvements, as do we!

Math
October
Looking for ways to support your mathematician at home? Look no further! Bridges in Mathematics offers various digital tools directly aligned to our curriculum which can support learning outside of the school day.
Math At Home is a free website filled with fun daily math activities, family activities, and online games. Activities are organized by grade and mathematical content. For each activity, there is an option to have the equation read aloud to your child as well as a printable option if you’d prefer.
The Math Learning Center offers free apps that are based on the visual models used in Bridges in Mathematics. All apps can be used on a computer or an iOS device. You can click ‘learn more’ about the app before your mathematician engages with it. This explains what the model is and allows you to watch a tutorial of how to use the app. There are also activities that directly align to the visual models that can be used for additional practice. The activities can be sorted by grade, topic and app.
Notes from the Nurse
"Flu before Boo"
Doctors often use the phrase “flu before boo” to remind people to get their flu vaccine before Halloween. Often, I am asked by parents and guardians "when should I get the flu vaccine?" I always recommend consulting with your primary care physician as I do not take the place of your medical provider.
Some may have heard the recent news reports that the 2026–2027 flu season is off to an unusually early start in parts of the United States particularly on the west coast. For those who choose to get the flu shot for themselves and their students, it is just a reminder that it does take about two weeks for the body to build full protection.
Pre-k - For those students in our pre-K and smart start programs under the age of 5 years old, are required to receive the flu vaccine. 1 dose administered between August 1st - December 31st - 2 doses if the student has never received the flu vaccine prior and needs to be separated by 28 days. Proof of vaccination is required by December 31st.
Any questions or concerns please reach our office.
Thank you,
