HMS STAFF HIGHLIGHTS HMS STAFF HIGHLIGHTS

Hemlock Middle School is proud to have added a fantastic educator to our team. Mrs. Ashley Bebow has joined our team as a member of our Math Department. Mrs. Bebow teaches sixth and seventh grade math. Mrs. Bebow is entering her ninth year as a teacher after spending her first eight in the Bullock Creek School District and teaching part-time at SVSU. She is in her third semester teaching beginning Algebra at the college level.

Principal, Josh Chase, says “Mrs. Bebow has an energy that is contagious. She has a way to make kids excited about learning math concepts. She always comes to school ready to teach and inspire. She is an experienced educator, and we are lucky to have here at HMS.”

Bebow grew up in Shepherd, MI, but was born in Oceanside, CA. Her proudest professional moment was having her proposal to speak at the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics accepted not only once, but three times! Personally, her most proud moment was breaking the indoor track record for the mile at SVSU. “I worked really hard to accomplish that goal and did it with a time of 4:55” said Bebow.

Mrs. Bebow’s favorite thing about HMS is the staff is that “everyone is so friendly and helpful. I felt like a part of the team from Day 1.” Her family consists of husband, Jake, and their four fur-babies: Phineas, Einstein, Wiggles, and Luna (all cats). Her favorite hobby is running. “I love to run! I've been a runner since 7th grade. I mainly race 5ks and Half Marathons. Just this last Sunday I ran a half marathon in Lansing and placed 4th out of 271 female runners,” said Mrs. Bebow.

Mrs. Bebow’s favorite quote is: "Somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world." - Roald Dahl If teaching wasn't enough to keep her busy, she also has another job with Mary Kay as an Independent Beauty Consultant. Another interesting tidbit about her is that she has relatives who live in Denmark, which she has been able to travel to once and would like to do so again.

8th Grade Math teacher, Jeremy Stedry has this to say “Ashley has been a great addition to the middle school. She brings knowledge and fresh ideas to the classroom. She is very passionate about teaching, loves working with students, and has made the transition look seamless."

A typical day of school can get messy at Hemlock Middle School. Well, if we didn’t have Mr. Shane Smith that is! Mr. Smith is a new face to our building as he comes to us from the high school. He made the transition over after Mr. Earle was hired as an elementary physical education teacher. Mr. Smith is originally from Hemlock and has been a resident since 1975.

Mr. Smith is married to his wife, Liberty, and they have three wonderful sons. Mr. Smith works as our day custodian and reports to work each day at 6 am. He is an integral part of our team and ensures that our building is clean and safe each day.

Mr. Smith oversees other custodians and makes sure that his team understands new cleaning trends and products that we use in our building. It is his responsibility to make sure that our entire building is clean and sanitized every day. He has been employed by Hemlock Public Schools for five years.

When asked about his proudest moment Mr. Smith replied “…the moment when I became a father”. His favorite thing about HMS is the way everyone treats you with respect and are very kind-hearted. His hobbies are fishing, playing darts, and just trying to be a good dad. His favorite author is Steven King, he loves muscle cars, and anything from the 1950’s through the 1980’s.

We are very fortunate to have Mr. Smith on our team. We thank you for your service!
