Can a student go to school with a rash?

Whether your child can attend school with a rash depends on if it is contagious, spreading, or accompanied by symptoms like fever, pain, or fluid drainage. Keep them home if the rash is new, unexplained, or causing discomfort, as it could be a contagious viral infection (e.g., hand, foot, and mouth). Per the school district policy, students can return once the rash has completely gone away or with a doctor’s note saying that it is not contagious.

When to Keep Your Child Home

· Fever: The rash is accompanied by a fever.

· Contagious Symptoms: The rash is spreading, weeping/draining fluid, or causing pain.

· Illness Behavior: The child is acting sick, has poor appetite, or cannot focus.

· Infection Suspicion:

· If you suspect chickenpox, impetigo, or measles, seek medical attention and keep them home.

· Measles Symptoms: Watch for high fever, red/watery eyes, cough, runny nose, and a rash that often starts on the face/neck.

· Contagious Period: Measles are contagious four days before and four days after the rash appears.

· Action: If exposed, watch symptoms for 21 days.

· Vaccination: The MMR vaccine is 98% effective. While vaccines are needed for school entry, Florida law allows for religious or personal exemptions.

When It Might Be Safe for School

· Chronic Conditions: A mild, familiar rash (e.g., eczema) that is not causing discomfort.

· Non-Contagious: The doctor has confirmed the rash is not contagious.

· Treating/Healed: A condition like ringworm that has been treated and is no longer contagious.
