Doing the Math: Small Shifts, Big Impact

Ohio’s Plan for K-12 Mathematics establishes a statewide vision for high-quality, research- and evidence-based mathematics instruction. A key part of that vision is ensuring students have meaningful access to rigorous mathematics instruction.

So, walk into a mathematics classroom and ask yourself: Who is doing the mathematics—the teacher or the students?

Students need opportunities to think, reason, represent, explain, question, and solve mathematics—not simply watch their teacher do it for them. Ohio’s plan calls for high-quality Tier 1 instruction that supports students in accessing grade-level mathematics.

A simple question can help guide instructional decisions:

*“What mathematics will my students be doing today?”

*If the answer is mostly “watching me,” consider how you can shift some of the mathematical work to your students.

*Students don't just need to see mathematics—they need to do mathematics.

Early Childhood

The licensing rule for school based preschool programs was updated over the past year and went into effect July 1, 2026. To get more information about this rule you can use the newly developed DCY Field Guides as your resource. There are different field guides for each of the Early Care and Education Programs so be sure to review the guide for School Based Preschool programs.

Ohio’s Attendance Dashboard

Ohio’s statewide student attendance dashboard helps communities quickly understand attendance trends and support efforts to keep students present, engaged, and on track for success.

Research consistently shows that students who attend school regularly perform better in critical areas such as reading proficiency, overall academic achievement, and high school graduation rates. Improving attendance requires strong, intentional systems that incorporate a community-wide approach.
