Public vs. Private Public vs. Private

The main difference between public and private colleges/universities are where they receive their funding. Public colleges and universities are funded by the federal government while private institutions are supported by their own endowment funds and students' tuition fees. Though private colleges and universities have a more expensive price tag, they often offer generous financial aid packages to cut down on overall cost of attendance.

This article from US News breaks down the differences quite nicely.

College Rep Visits College Rep Visits

College visits are winding down...

While there are no more scheduled college visits to LOHS, you are always welcome to set up an individual appointment with the Admissions Rep at the college/university you are interested in. If you need help finding your rep, send Ms. Stevie an email and she will track the information down.

College Acceptances

As those acceptances start to trickle in, students should do a few things:

  1. That final college essay was sent and you have heard back. Celebrate!
  2. Log into Naviance and click the box that indicates you were accepted.
  3. Visit the College & Career Center to notify Ms. Stevie. She wants to celebrate with you! And when you decide where you're headed in the fall (don't worry, you still have plenty of time), be sure to let her and your counselor know!
  4. Remember, senior year is not over just because you received a college acceptance. Continue to study and do all of your work.

In the Community

Throughout the year, there will be events/opportunities in the Portland Metro area related to College and Career that you may be interested in attending. Here are some opportunities that might be of interest.

Gap Year Fair

A Gap Year can be a transformative experience for students after high school graduation. Students have a chance to get out of their comfort zones, experience something new, and challenge themselves so that, regardless of where life takes them, they are moving forward with more confidence, a more open mind, and greater understanding and empathy.

While a gap year is much more common for students from the UK, Australia, and Germany, more and more American universities are encouraging students to take gap years between high school and college. Universities like Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, Yale and MIT actually encourage admitted high school seniors to take a gap year before they begin their time at the university.

There will be a Gap Year Fair on February 15 from 6:00-8:30pm. The event is free but registration is required. Register here

In March, the University of Idaho will be hosting their regional event called Meet the Vandals. This event is a great way for both admitted and interested students and their families to get to know the university better, without having to travel away from home. Meet the Vandals will allow attendees to preview student life at UI, explore majors, learn about financial aid and scholarships, as well as map out their next steps in their academic journey.

Trade Highlight of the Month - Tattoo Artist Trade Highlight of the Month - Tattoo Artist

Tattoo Artists creates permanent images or words in clients' skin by injecting ink and other pigments just underneath the skin with a small, sanitized needle. This job can be mentally and physically exhausting as the art form requires intense concentration and leaves little room for error. It can take years of hard work for an artist to build enough confidence in their ability and is why it is highly recommended to apprentice under a skilled tattoo artist before starting your own career.

The salary range of a tattoo artist is $32k-$120k with the average base salary at $61,898 annually. However, keep in mind that a tattoo artist is not considered professional until they have at least 5 years of experience.

Tattooing is one of the oldest art forms known to man. The art of tattoos has a long and fascinating history dating back to 3370 B.C. To read a bit about the history of tattoos, check out this site.

7 Things You Need to Know Before Becoming a Tattoo Artist!

Tattoo Styles

  1. Classic Americana tattoo: This tattoo style was popularized by Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins in the 1930s. They’re closely tied to the ocean and nautical imagery, pinup female figures, fierce predatory animals, or combinations of hearts, roses, and daggers.

  2. New School tattoo: These tattoos are like a comic book on your skin filled with a vividly colored, imagined world.
  3. Irezumi: Japanese style tattoos. These tattoos have a distinct look and use symbolism to show their meaning. Irezumi tattoos are known for their large images that cover the back, arms, and legs.
  4. Black and Gray tattoo: One of the most common tattoo styles that focuses on shading.
  5. Realism tattoo: These tattoos look true to life and can be in color or black and gray. They can portray anything from scenery or objects to animals and people (portraiture tattoo).
  6. Stick-N-Poke tattoo: This style uses a single needle to create simple designs.
  7. Biomechanical tattoo: These tattoos use the unique flow of a person’s body to mimic machinery that could be hidden within the skin.
  8. Geometric tattoo: This style of tattoo can feature geometric elements only or have a combination of geometric and natural elements.
  9. Trash Polka tattoo: This style was created by Germany’s Buena Vista Tattoo Club. It is a style that mixes blackwork, realism, and trash. It’s instantly recognizable for it’s collage-like structure which typically uses only black and red ink.
  10. Surrealism tattoo: This style evokes imagination and creativity that blends elements of realism to create something fantastical.

Becoming a Tattoo Artist

There are two ways to become a tattoo artist in Oregon:

  1. Graduate from an Oregon licensed tattooing career school.
  2. Reciprocity meaning you already possess a tattoo license from another state, for example

In Portlandia's opening song Dream of the 90s, the lyrics reads "the tattoo ink never runs dry" and by the number of tattoo schools and studios in the area, there might be some truth to that! The following tattoo schools are closest to Lake Oswego but not a complete list:

  • Angel Ink Tattoo
  • Graveyard Tattoos
  • Skin City Tattoo and Body Piercing

OSAC Scholarship and The Ford Family Scholarship applications are OPEN!

On November 1st, both the OSAC Scholarship Application and The Ford Family Foundation scholarship applications opened!

The OSAC Scholarship Application is a common application that supports between 500-600 scholarships each year. These scholarships are for Oregon students with each scholarship having it's own criteria and limitations. Some of these scholarships DO allow students to attend college outside of Oregon.

To access the OSAC Scholarship Application, click here

Most high school students will want to apply to the Ford Scholars program, which funds high school graduates who are seeking a bachelor's degree. While the Ford Scholars are very generous financially, the true value in the scholarship comes in the form of ongoing support from The Ford Family Foundation, including a success coach, leadership development and an active alumni network. This scholarship is open to students from Oregon (and Siskiyou County California), and students must attend college or university in their home state. View the flyer below for more information about the Ford Scholars Program.
