News for the Families of Duval Charter School at Southside
Monday, September 30th, 2019
Note from the Principal's Office:
In talking with the teachers and observing for this first full month of school, an area that Southside can improve on, is maximizing student instructional time in the classroom. Our teachers are frequently interrupted with their teaching and learning for things like forgotten lunch boxes, parent phone calls to students, etc. We are asking you to partner with us to protect your students' learning time.
If lunches are forgotten at home and you do not wish to have your child eat the hot lunch available here at school, then the lunch that you drop off will be placed at a lunch pick up table in the cafeteria. Students without lunch, will check there before heading into the cafeteria lunch line.
Many days our front desk is spending a high volume of time handling food delivery for students. Please know that this practice is not standard and should be for a special occasion such as you eating with your child for a birthday, etc. not a daily practice. Any food deliveries will also be placed on the lunch pick up table, rather than interrupting instruction.
In an emergency, if you need to talk to your child during the instructional day, please know that you will be directed to speak to an administrator first.
Thank you again for understanding that we need to protect the learning time in the classroom to help all children excel! Our goal is a high performing arts and sciences school where all children thrive and we need you to help make this happen.
~Principal Sauer

K-3 Book Character Parade
K-3 Character Day Parade:
What: Book Character Dress-Up Day
Choose your favorite book character and come to school dressed up as that character.
Who: K-3 Students
When: Thursday, October 17th
Time: 2:00 p.m (Back car loop)
HERE’S THE PLAN: Each student will bring a copy of a book, or comic book, that includes the character they are representing. The book must be one that the child has either read or listened to an adult read. They must have the book with them (or a small poster of the book cover) because they will carry this during the parade at 2:00.
ARE THERE ANY RULES ABOUT THE COSTUMES?
Yes! Make sure the costume covers the same area as
the uniform. Please wear closed toe shoes. Masks may not be worn in the classroom; only during the parade! Nothing ghoulish or scary is acceptable. You may bring accessories (i.e.: a Honey Pot for Winnie the Pooh), but they cannot be toy weapons or any other object that might be considered threatening. If your child is not wearing a costume, the DCSS school uniform must be worn.
Parents are invited to come to the “Character Parade” at 2:00 p.m. You’ll want to arrive by 1:45 p.m. Bring your cameras and enjoy! After the parade is over, parents must sign their child(ren) out in the office if they intend to take them home.
