Medical and Education Research on Screen Time

Research shows that how students use technology in school is just as important as how much they use it. Screen time that is active, interactive, and tied directly to learning goals can boost engagement and expand learning opportunities. However, prolonged passive screen use, such as watching non-instructional videos or completing repetitive tasks can impact student focus, health, and overall learning. The following organizations have provided guidance based on medical and educational research.

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) moved away from blanket time caps, citing no universal “safe number of hours,” instead it recommends purpose-driven, high-quality use, balanced with sleep, physical activity, and offline learning. This applies at school as well as at home.

  • American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry recommends that for children ages 2-5, limit non-educational screen time to about 1 hour per weekday and 3 hours on the weekend days. For children ages 6 and older, encourage healthy habits and limit activities that include screens.

  • In his book Digital for Good, International Society for Technology in Education or ISTE CEO Richard Culatta shifts the narrative from “screen time” to “screen value.” He says using a clock to judge technology use teaches kids that every on-screen activity has the same value, which isn’t true. Some screen activities are high-value (creating, connecting, learning), while others are low-value (mindless scrolling). The goal is balance across types of activities, not blanket quotas.

  • The most recent study around screen time is from University of Queensland Professor Michael Noete who completed 132 longitudinal studies and found that moderate, intentional screen use, especially for educational purposes, poses minimal risk to children’s well-being. The research suggests that educational screen activities can be 2 of 6 beneficial when balanced with offline learning and social interaction. This study highlights that screen time guidelines for children often recommend less than 1 hour of screen time per day for young kids, and under 2 hours a day for older children.

Parents, please note that I am sharing this information specifically about the value of intentional academic screen time.

Masked Singers Masked Singers

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map Show in original size

Last year we debuted our parents as undercover Masked Singers and the students had such an amazing time! We are looking for 8-12 performers for this year's Masked Singers Program. The assembly will be on Friday, November 14th, but you would have to RSVP by November 1st. If you need more details before signing up, I will speak about it at our October 7th Coffee with the Principal.

Basically you would pick a school appropriate inflatable that covers up your identity. You pick a song that you can sing and perform to. You share your talent onstage for about a minute. Students vote for their favorite performance. But it's not about the winning. It's about the community building! Many of our students have shared that the Masked Singers was one of their biggest highlights from last year.

There is a plethora of inflatables right now at Spirit Halloween in Pasadena in case you need some inspiration. Don't miss this opportunity in being the highlight for your child!

iReady on iPhones or iPads iReady on iPhones or iPads

It has been brought to our attention that some parents are having issues getting onto the iReady platform on their iPhones and/or iPads at home. Please be sure to select DESKTOP SITE (see images below) and that should hopefully allow you to get in.
