Principals' Message Principals' Message

Dear SCS Families and Caregivers,

With this weekend marking the traditional start of summer, we are walking that fine line between end-of-year celebrations and culminations of learning, planning for next year, and recognizing that there is still plenty of important learning left over the final three weeks of the school year.

A few highlights from this week to showcase student experiences are included below.

  • Bus Evacuation- This week students riding buses completed their Spring Bus evacuation. These drills teach students to remain calm, leave belongings behind, and evacuate quickly in an orderly, seat-by-seat manner. Drills include using the front door or emergency rear exit, with students instructed to sit and scoot out the back door to avoid injury. As we watched students and their bus drivers work together to practice safety, we felt compelled to share some other transportation reminders and appreciations with the broader community.

    • When buses are leaving our school driveway and turning right, please hold back if you are in oncoming traffic, to allow them to take a wider (and safe) turn onto Harbor Road.

    • Dropoff for Morning Movement has been going much more smoothly. We appreciate everyone remembering to drop students off at the School Street doors - and our facilities team for putting up a sign in the staff parking lot with that reminder.

  • Music Informances- Thank you to Jodi Sanders and Cam Brownell for hosting a musical celebration for all Kindergarten through fourth grade students and caregivers. The singing, exploration of musical instruments and coordinated dancing was a joyful example of the engaging learning that students are experiencing this year.

  • Middle-Level Orientation- As we prepare for next year, we were thrilled to host such a large group of incoming middle school students and families to learn more about our 5-8 philosophy and expectations. Our rising 5th graders asked a ton of great questions from, “do I get a new Chromebook in fifth grade?” (yes) to “will I have friends in my classes?” (also yes, but likely not all of them). Thank you to our 8th grade student helpers for giving tours and sharing their own memories from middle school. We’re pumped to welcome our new 5th graders more officially in August.

We wish you a safe, restful and meaningful Memorial Day weekend! There is no school Monday due to the holiday. We’ll see all students back here on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

In partnership,

Antonia, Jen and Brett

The SCS Administrative team

Highlights of our Week Highlights of our Week

We are so happy to share the great success that was Shrek Jr. last weekend. 4th and 5th graders from SCS spent about 5 months working on this show, co-directed by Jodi Sanders and Quigley Lyden. They all did an amazing job. Every student shined so brightly, and what a wonderfully funny show to bring us all together. We owe a big 'thank you' to everyone who helped us put this show on: staff members, students, and families, we simply couldn't do it without you!

The Hoop House is Here!

After years of work from a wide variety of community members, what a great feeling it is to finally see the exterior of the SCS Hoop House reach completion! Thank you to our student and faculty leaders for their dogged pursuit of this goal - with a special shout out to Eric Denice for volunteering his time and talents to put it all together. We're also grateful to the Shelburne-Charlotte-Hinesburg Interfaith Partnership (SCHIP) for their financial support, and to Erika Monaghan for securing an additional grant to help us deck out the inside. We can't wait to see where this goes.

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of welcoming author Amy Guglielmo for a special visit with our artists! In the weeks leading up to her visit, students read her books and created artwork inspired by the artists and stories she brings to life. During her time with us, Amy read her book Pocket Full of Colors and shared the inspiring journey that led her to become a writer. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect literature and art in a meaningful way.

If you are interested in purchasing one of Amy’s books, we encourage you to support local through Flying Pig: https://flyingpigbooks.com/list/amy-guglielmo-scs-author-visit

It’s Prevention Week: Small Conversations Have a Big Impact

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) team supports students in grades 5–12 by promoting well-being, prevention, and healthy decision-making, and serves as a resource for both students and caregivers. Each May, communities across the country recognize National Prevention Week as a time to promote healthy choices, positive relationships, and mental well-being for young people. Prevention efforts are important for students. The skills children build early, such as coping with stress, making safe decisions, and asking for help, can have a lasting impact on their health and success. Through education, connection, and supportive adults, Prevention Week reminds us that prevention is not just about avoiding risky behaviors, but about helping all students develop the confidence and resilience they need to thrive. Read more tips and conversation starters.

Shelburne Residents: Weigh In on the Town’s Future

The Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC) is supporting the Town of Shelburne in updating its Town Plan and is inviting residents, workers, and community members to participate in a short community survey. The Town Plan establishes goals and policies that guide local decision-making related to housing, economic development, transportation, land use, and community character. Community input will help shape draft recommendations that reflect current needs and priorities.

The survey takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete and is available online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VM2T8B8. Participants may enter a raffle to win one of four $50 gift certificates to a Shelburne local business. Printed copies and alternative formats are available upon request. Community members with questions or who need assistance completing the survey may contact Anne Nelson Stoner at anstoner@ccrpcvt.org.
