LISD Families,

As we embark on the second nine weeks of the school year, we have already celebrated so many outstanding achievements by our students and staff. The month of October is Principal Appreciation Month and I want to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to all of our outstanding campus principals. Our Recognize SomeONE initiative is always a great way to say thank you to any of our staff members, and these notes of appreciation mean so much to them all throughout the school year.

Take one look at our district social media and you’ll see countless examples of why LISD is the One Choice for education: stories told through the voices of our families, the innovation happening in our classrooms, and the celebrations of student success across every campus. From advancing in state-level athletic competitions to earning top ratings at fine arts events, our students continue to demonstrate the excellence, teamwork, and determination that make LISD the One Choice for learning, growth, and opportunity.

We are also thrilled to celebrate Tim Fails from Flower Mound 9th Grade Campus, who was recently named Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year. Mr. Fails’ passion for teaching, creativity in the classroom, and commitment to his students exemplify the quality of educators we have across LISD, and we are proud to see him honored in this way.

With more than 1,180 bus routes running each day, we continue working diligently to improve our transportation services. While over 80% of routes operate smoothly, we know that when routes must be combined due to driver absences or shortages, it can create inconsistency for families and longer rides for students. We are actively hiring additional drivers as we work to strengthen and stabilize our transportation team.

In this newsletter, you’ll also find updates on district initiatives, including efforts to reimagine PreK programs in the LHS feeder pattern, laying a strong foundation for student learning from the very start. Additionally, LISD has one Board seat, At-Large Place 6, on the ballot. Early voting ends Oct. 31, and Election Day is Nov. 4. We encourage everyone to make their voice heard.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in the education of your children.

LISD recently gained national attention as our district was named to Forbes’ list of America’s Best Employers for Best Company Culture, a rare honor for a public school district. LISD was one of only 15 DFW-area companies praised on the list, and the only public school district in DFW to make the list. This recognition underscores the power of a districtwide commitment to cultivating a culture where students, staff and the families we serve thrive.

Mill Street Reassignment

District leaders recently presented information regarding a required Turnaround Plan for neighboring Mill Street Elementary. As part of the plan, students at Mill Street will be reassigned to neighboring elementary campuses in LISD. The existing Mill Street facility will remain district-owned and be utilized as a second stand-alone LISD early childhood facility.

As part of the plan, LISD will reimagine the PreK programs in the LHS feeder pattern to ensure a strong learning foundation for students. Currently, Lillie J. Jackson serves as the only early childhood center in LISD. The additional Pre-K facility will serve students zoned for the LHS feeder pattern and help standardize early learning opportunities as children enter their elementary schools in Kindergarten. For additional details, visit the district website.

LISD PTA Candidate Forum

This fall, the LISD Council of PTAs hosted a school board candidate forum where individuals running for the LISD Board of Trustees discussed the future of LISD. WATCH the forum.

Join Your Local PTA

Parent-teacher associations allow families and community members to get involved with their local schools by planning events, supporting teachers and raising funds for campus-related needs. Now is the perfect time to join your school’s PTA by clicking HERE. Looking for more ways to get involved? Visit LISD.net/Volunteer.

Fall Parent Survey

The fall parent survey will soon hit your inbox, and we encourage you to submit feedback and input that helps us shape the future of LISD. This year families impacted by last year's campus retirements, either by joining a new campus or welcoming new students to their campus, will have the opportunity to submit feedback about their experiences so far this school year. Be on the lookout for an email from survey@lisd.net.

Senate Bill 10

Effective Sept. 1, 2025, classrooms that receive a donated poster of the Ten Commandments that meets the size and display requirements outlined in Texas Senate Bill 10 are required to display the poster as mandated by the legislation. Families of students on campuses that receive donations will be notified.

2017 Bond

All 2017 bond projects are now complete or nearing completion. Thoughtful budgeting allowed us to add several extra projects and still maintain $14 million in savings. Thank you to our voters for your continued support and investment in our schools, making these projects possible.

2023 Bond

Projects included in the 2023 Bond referendum continue to make progress, with many furniture, flooring, casework, and playground replacements closed and/or nearing close out. Two playground projects were added utilizing savings, including the Polser playground relocation to Hebron Valley, and additional equipment needed for Homestead. In partnership with the City of Lewisville, a playground is also being added on the Hedrick Middle School property.

Band instrument replacements are approximately 90% complete for high schools and 75% for middle schools, while orchestra instruments for middle and high schools are about 80% complete. Percussion purchases are also nearing completion at roughly 90%. Elementary classroom instrument purchases are currently about 25% complete. "Something really unique about LISD is, while we're doing a great job in the classroom, we're also doing an amazing job in our extracurriculars. Our sports teams, our fine arts are absolutely amazing and both of my children have gotten to benefit and, as a teacher, I've seen it benefiting other students as well."
