Science/Social Studies
Students continued our study of Latin America with a new chapter about the land conflicts in the Amazon Rainforest. Students are in the process of examining why each group wants claim to that land and the effect that each group has as well. Some of our vocabulary words include: desarollo sostenible, desforestación, madereros, caucheros, ganaderos, ganado, talar, medio ambiente, albergar, abarcar, superficie y desarollar.
Looking ahead our next quiz and binder check will be October 23.
Next week:
Monday- No School
Tuesday- Last Day: Conflictos por el uso de la tierra de la selva amazónica
Wednesday- Study Day
Thursday- Study Day
Friday: Latin America Quiz and Binder Check #3
Also we have been working on a map of the world puzzle in the back of my classroom since the start of the school year and are almost done! I am looking for any puzzles that connect with different maps of the world/continents or a specific place we study like the amazon. If you have any at home that you would be willing to share it would be much appreciated :) Thank you!
Spanish Language Arts
Hello Families,
This week, students worked on developing their public speaking skills in Spanish and participated in some fun team-building activities based on short essays!
Here’s a look at what we’ll be working on next:
Grammar: Adjectives, articles, comparatives, and superlatives, along with a review of verb conjugations across different tenses. (Spanish and English)
Writing: Developing character details and supporting ideas with text evidence.
Reading: After seven weeks of working on our Book of the Month, El epico fracaso de Arturo Zamora, students will submit their completed chapter-by-chapter analyses on Friday, October 23.
Spanish Books to Read at Home
To help students continue strengthening their Spanish fluency and reading comprehension, I encourage them to spend about 20 minutes each day reading in Spanish at home. I’ve included some book recommendations in the document linked below and will continue adding more suggestions. I hope you find it helpful!
As we head into fall break, I hope you and your family enjoy a relaxing and wonderful time together!
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your continued support and partnership!
Kindly,
Sra. Sweers
Additional Opportunities
Continental Math League: Your student has the opportunity to participate in the Continental Math League. Sra. Okoba Schoenborn will be hosting 5 competitions throughout the year starting in November. Sra. Okoba has practice pages and answer keys available to students in her classroom. Here is a link to a family information page.
Word Masters: Your child will also have the option to participate in Word Masters. A sheet with the first set of words is available at this link . The first competition will also take place in November in Sra. Okoba's class. Here is a link to the family information page.
English Language Arts: Ways to Support Growth at Home!
During parent teacher conferences, many parents asked about how to support MAP growth for English at home. We have two suggestions...
1. 20 Minutes of independent reading of a physical book per day! Reading is one of the top predictors for academic success.
2. We will be following along with this IXL Week Boost Skill Plan to supplement students with work that will benefit them at home. Each week has a recommendation of 4-6 IXL codes that students can progress through week by week. We are on WEEK 1 and next week will be working on WEEK 2. This is an optional extension activity for students.

Links Opportunity
What is LINKS?
LINKS is an opportunity for students to build genuine friendships and meaningful connections with students with disabilities while promoting inclusion throughout our school community.
What will LINKS look like this year?
My hope is that each Friday, we will invite students who have signed up from different teams into our classroom to participate in a fun activity with our students! I will be connecting with teachers in the coming weeks to find the best times for their students to participate based on their schedules.
We are also hoping to plan some fun LINKS outings and activities throughout the year. We will have a specific date for students who sign up to come together and learn more about what it means to be a LINK, what to expect, and how they can help build meaningful friendships with our students.
A few important things to know:
LINKS is open to both 5th and 6th grade students.
The sign-up form should be completed with a parent/guardian.
We are looking for serious inquiries from students who are genuinely interested in participating and building friendships.
LINKS is meant to be a commitment, not simply an alternative option for recess, class, or free time.
Our goal is to create long-term friendships and meaningful connections between students.
Sign-Up Deadline: October 23
If your student is interested in becoming a LINK, please complete the form with a parent/guardian by October 23:
