Atentamente,

Mr. Castillo

Director interino

Dear James John Families,

That thunderstorm this morning was quite amazing, it reminded me of growing up in the flat lands of South Texas.

The staff and I have had such an amazing few days during our preservice and are excited to welcome back families and students next week on August 29th. Our work these past days included aligning our commitment to ourselves and our community of learners. In the weeks ahead, we will be working on setting clear expectations with students, building classroom communities and our school wide community.

While this can be a joyous time for students it can also be a time of confusion and stress as they adjust to their new grade level and teacher. Preparing for this new journey requires front loading expectations, coaching and routines for students. While this work is for teachers to take on, I am asking families to also have conversations with your young ones about transitioning back to school and keeping to a routine that allows your young ones to feel rested and ready for their academic day.

Below are some strategies that can help

Positive Return to School Strategies:

  • Get plenty of sleep

(The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has recommended that children aged 6–12 years should regularly sleep 9–12 hours per 24 hours)

  • Set a reasonable bedtime and establish a bedtime routine

  • Lay clothes out & get backpacks ready the night before

  • Limit screen time (off at least one hour before bedtime)

  • Set up a wake-up routine

  • Have an After-school routine, including how they are getting home from school

  • Practice patience and compassion as students transition back into their school routines

Important information:

  • Breakfast

    • Breakfast begins at 7:45 am and is served until 8:00 am. Please try to drop off students on time for breakfast. Teachers begin the academic day at 8:05 am. If your child is late, please report to the office.

  • Late Arrivals and Early Pick up

    • All parents must report to the office to check in their child for late arrival and early pick up. Students are not to be dropped off by classroom doors or picked up early without informing the front office. Please call the office should a change occur for drop off or pick-up.

  • Wellness and Birthdays

    • This year we are asking families to please not send students to school with candy nor with family/jumbo size bags of “snacks” -examples, potato chips, Takis, Cheetos. We understand that a lunch box may contain a treat, please keep the snack to a healthy option, if posible.

    • Students will have 2 recess/brainbreaks scheduled each day.

    • Students will receive a healthy snack, provided by the school.

    • While we recognize birthdays, we do not celebrate with food. Please do not send cupcakes, soda pop, candy or gum to school with your child. Celebration items must be approved by the teacher and admin.

  • Toy vs. Tools

    • Please do not send students to school with toys. Small discreet fidget “toys” can be used as “tools” that help students focus on their learning. Toys provide entertainment and tools help learning. Please help your child understand the difference between a tool and a toy.

  • Cell Phones

    • Cell phones are off and away the entire school day. Any violation of this policy will result in the following actions:

      • 1st violation- Warning.

      • 2nd violation- Phone will be confiscated and turned into the office to be picked up at the end of the day by the student.

      • 3rd violation- Phone will be confiscated and parents will have to pick up the phone in the office.

    • This means that no cell phones should be out in the hallways, classrooms, bathrooms, recess or lunch room at James John Elementary.

    • If your child needs to reach you, they will report to the Office to make the call, so the Office is aware of any emergency or concern.

    • Please do not call your child during the school day. Instead, please contact the Main Office at 503 -916-6266.

Thank you and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. We look forward to seeing all the smiling faces next week.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mr. Castillo
