Finish Strong!

With Prom in the rearview mirror (the students who attended were tremendous by the way,) we know that the end of the school year is just around the corner. As the academic year begins to wind down, we need to shift our collective focus to one clear goal: finishing the year strong. With just weeks left in the semester, we are balancing final exams, projects, activities, and personal commitments as we work to close out the school year on a high note. We know it's easy to lose motivation in the last quarter, especially when the weather gets nicer and summer feels so close, but we need to keep reminding ourselves that how we finish matters just as much as how we started.

As teachers and administrators, we are encouraging students to stay focused, remain organized, and seek help when needed. Ask our counseling department and they will tell you that many students underestimate the importance of the final grading period, which can impact overall GPA, eligibility for scholarships, and graduation requirements. The habits we build now—discipline, resilience, time management—will serve you far beyond high school.

Our senior students in particular are balancing end-of-year academic responsibilities with big decisions about the future. College acceptances, tech school, job plans, military and even a well-planned gap year option are all part of the conversation, but staying engaged in the present remains essential.

In addition to academic efforts, many students are involved in spring sports, performances, and course competitions. With award ceremonies and graduation on the horizon, the energy on campus is both celebratory and determined.

As the countdown to summer continues, cardinals continue to prove that hard work, commitment, and school pride don’t fade in the final quarter - this is where we show our true colors (CARDINAL & NAVY!).

CHOIR

A really awesome day for all three EHS choirs at State Large Group contest!

Students sang for a panel of three judges and were rated on a rubric that assesses things like tone, intonation, expression/dynamics, pitch/rhythmic accuracy, diction, balance, and blend. The rating scale is as follows:

69-80 points - Outstanding 1 rating

53-68 points - Excellent 2 rating

37-52 points - Average 3 rating

21-36 points - Poor 4 rating

8-20 points - Ineffective 5 rating

In their FIRST contest performance in recent history, Concert Choir received a 67, 68, and 71 for an overall Excellent 2 rating! They were less than 1 point away from a 1 rating AND were in the tough spot of being the first group to perform for the day.

Cantorei (treble choir) received a 71, 73, and 73 for an overall Outstanding 1 rating!

Primo Voci (mixed choir) received a 69, 73, and 78 for an overall Outstanding 1 rating!

Very proud of these groups and the performances they gave today. If you have any of these kiddos the rest of the week, tell them congrats!

BAND

The Band had a wonderful performance at Baldwin High School today at 1:51pm. The repertoire that we selected to play was not easy, but the students stepped up to the challenge. In our state, we play graded music; grade 1-6 (1 being the easiest and 6 being professional level). As a 4A school, we are required to schedule at least 1 grade 3 piece to play for state large ensemble. This year, the band played a grade 4 piece of music. We have played grade 4 pieces of music in the past, but we have never earned a 1 rating at state large ensemble when we have played a grade 4 piece.

That is until TODAY! The Band earned a 1 outstanding rating today at state large ensemble. While I am happy about the rating, I am more impressed with the improvement this group has made all year long. Thank you all for your support of these fine musicians!

Senior Katie Courter, senior Maddy Arnold, and Junior O’Toole, along with senior Burris each had multiple hits in the game.

Seamen High

The second game on Friday night was versus Topeka Seamen, defeating the Vikings 7-3. A triple by Senior Jaiden Burris put the Cardinals on the board first in the top of the first inning. Seamen took the lead in the bottom of the second, with a single driving in 2 runs for a 1-2 lead. Eudora flipped the game on its head in the top of the third inning, scoring 5 runs on five hits to take the lead 6-2. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by sophomore Lori Brooks that drove in 2. Senior Sam Claire will get the credit for the win pitching 4 innings and giving up 2 hits, 2 runs, and striking out 8. Junior Olivia O’Toole finished up the game for the Cardinals, allowing 1 run and only 2 hits. Eudora amassed 10 hits in the game. Brooks led the Cards with 2 runs batted in, going 1-3 in the game. Paola 10-9-0 Paola 7-9-1

Eudora 0-3-3 Eudora 4-7-6

The Varsity Cardinals lost a doubleheader to a strong senior-led Paola team on Tuesday. It was the first league loss for Eudora dropping them to 2-1 in league play. Sophomore Brayden Decker gave it his all but came up short today as the bats were not there for the Cardinals. In game 2 it started rough with 4 unearned runs in the first inning, but Sophomore Houston Carnagie settled in and pitched great in his first varsity start allowing just 2 earned runs in a 4-7 loss to Paola. The offense was led by seniors Braedon VanDonge, Jake Arnold, and Caden Stedry who had two hits each.

Veritas 3-4-3 Veritas 4-3-1

Eudora 14-15-1 Eudora 3-3-2

The Eudora varsity baseball split a doubleheader against Veritas on Thursday. They won the first game 14-3 after the bats came alive. Junior Cooper Burling got the win going 5 innings and striking out 9 hitters. The Cardinals had 15 hits led by junior Jack Cline who had 3 hits in the game. Junior Max McCleary had 3 RBI on the day. In game 2 the bats went cold as the Cardinals didn’t get a hit until late in the game losing a close one 3-4. The Cardinals fell behind early and tried to battle back. Sophomore Reilly Neis went 4 innings in relief giving up no runs and striking out 4 while only giving up 1 hit. The cards look to get back at it tonight at Spring Hill.

JV Baseball - Coach Galley

In game one vs Paola, the Eudora junior varsity Cardinals had trouble keeping up with the Paola Panthers in a 2-12 loss on Tuesday at Paola, KS.

Junior Ethan Ross stepped on the bump first for Eudora Junior Varsity Cardinals. The starting pitcher allowed four hits and six runs (four earned) over three innings, striking out two and walking four. Sophomore Quinn Brunin and freshman Javion Noble were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in one run for Eudora.

In game two freshman Zeke Bartmess collected three hits in four at-bats, but that wasn't enough as EHS dropped game two 6-8. Bartmess singled in the first inning, singled in the sixth inning, and doubled in the seventh inning. Eudora fought back after getting down by five runs in the fifth inning. The comeback fell just short though. Eudora closed the gap by scoring on a single, a single, a double, and a single and got on the board in the fourth inning after Bryce

VanDonge singled and scored a run. Quinn Brunin began the game and allowed six hits and three runs over four innings, striking out five and walking two. Logan Marler stepped on the mound first for Paola Junior Varsity Panthers. The lefty gave up eight hits and five runs (four earned) over six innings, striking out eight and walking one. EHS piled up 10 hits in the game as Javion Noble led EHS with two runs batted in from the number seven spot in the lineup. The third baseman went 1-for-4 on the day. Sophomore Reilly Neis collected two hits for Eudora in three at bats. Eudora was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Andrew DeSoto had the most chances in the field with nine defensive plays

Paola Invitational 4/10/25

Notes: The weather was finally a little bit warmer for us and the athletes did not disappoint - we had almost 40 PRs! Additionally, Avah Dye secured the Freshman Long Jump Record and is now #3 All Time for Eudora. Paola is a varsity-level meet, and we had the opportunity to bring several of our athletes who don’t regularly compete at the varsity level, giving them valuable experience. While we didn’t bring home a ton of hardware, we are really proud of how solid our performances were across the board. This group of athletes will continue to improve throughout this season and they represent Eudora well.

Varsity Girls Soccer - Coach Erp

Barstow 5-1 Win 1-0 League 3-2 Overall

When you lose two straight and are shut out for 5 straight halves, you start to question whether the ball will ever hit the net again. Versus Barstow came out and really played ok during the first half. We created chances and got shots off. We hit the post twice, the keeper made a couple of saves and we had some near misses. So we started pressing, forcing things to happen instead of letting them happen by our play. We started over dribbling and our movement stopped because of it. This led to being out of position and we lost our middle a lot. That all led to them really controlling the last ten minutes and us giving up a goal on one of the few chances they got. The girls looked frustrated and dejected at the half. So we changed the lineup in the second half to start and it brought a spark. Going with the wind in the second half helped as well. We finally got the game tied by Leah Barnhart (9) putting a great shot from the top of the box away off a nice layoff from Kylie Bourne (9). Kambrea Kerr (10) made it 2-1 when we won a corner and Kam hit a great right-footed inswinger into the back of the net for an Olimpico. Kylie Bourne made it 3-1 after Brette Hayden (12) played her a ball in the middle Kylie Bourne settled with her left then cut back to her right and hit a banger from the top of the box. Payton Chappelle (10) made it 4-1 after Kambrea got 2 hands shoved over to earn the foul. P stepped up and hit a 30-yard shot that beat the keeper high. Brette capped off the scoring with her first goal of the season off a corner from Leah. Leah played a dangerous corner in and Brette put the cross away with some part of her body. We don’t care how it goes into the goal, just as long as it does. We played much better in the second half. The girls made the adjustments that we asked them to make and it led to better soccer.

At Ottawa 6-1 Win 2-0 League 4-2 Overall

We traveled to Ottawa last and came away with a 6-1 win! We started out ok but I felt we had too much dribbling happening and trying to make shots from 30 yards out. We have the potential to do no doubt but it’s also a low-percentage shot. Ottawa did go up 1-0 after a couple of bad first touches and a ball going under a foot. Their girl beat our backline and put a nice shot away. Abby Fager (11) did all she could to make the save. The girls woke up after that. We got it tied I believe off a corner or set piece. We didn’t film due to the wind and we forgot sandbags, so I can’t go to the film and look. Leah put a great ball in and it bounced around in the box and Camron McCormick (12) finally was able to put the ball away for her first goal of the season and to tie the game at 1. We made it 2-1 off a corner. Kambrea Kerr (10) put a great ball into the middle of the box and Payton Chappelle (10) hit a great side volley into the back of the net! At half, we talked about how we needed to move the ball more and faster, and our off-ball movement needed to be better. In the second half, it led to 4 goals in the half. To be honest I don’t remember the order in which the goals happened but I will explain them all. Kylie Bourne (9) got a ball from Brette Hayden (12) and KB turned and hit a great snapshot that beat the keeper. Camron got her brace when she followed up a shot that the keeper spilled and scored the rebound. Evey Steele (10) got a great ball from Lillian Mueting (9) and she hammered her shot into the top corner of the net. Evey got her brace after she took a shot the keeper made a nice save on but she followed her shot and Evey finished it off. We need to get out of the habit of starting slow because if we don’t somebody is going to score 1 goal and sit in and play defense and we may not put one away.

At Lansing 4-3 Win 2-0 League 5-2 Overall

I was a little worried about playing the Monday after prom. It’s a long weekend and girls are usually a little fatigued. I was more worried about that than the length and thickness of the grass. We came out and looked pretty good in the first ten minutes. We got a goal fairly early when we played a nice ball downline and Lillian Mueting (9) took the ball to the end line and played it back to Jaden Brooks (12) for a one-touch volley into the back of the net. I thought we let down a bit and allowed them back in the game. The wind did play a factor because they just played longball after longball. They scored three straight to make it 3-1 at the half.

We talked about several things at halftime and we challenged the girls. The girls responded really well, completely dominating Lansing and running them into the ground. We created chance after chance but just couldn’t find the net. We finally found the net when Evey Steele (10) drew a foul about 30 yards out from goal. Kambrea Kerr (10) hit a nice shot that the keeper tried to punch over the bar but it fell behind her across the line and was counted a goal. Shortly after we got a deep throw in the Kambrea threw the ball into the box and a Lansing girl put her arms in the air by her face. The ball hit her arms while in the box and we were awarded a PK. Kambrea took the PK and put the ball away to tie the game. This was with about 6 minutes left. We had a few more chances in that 6-minute time frame. Then Jaden earned a foul towards the sideline outside the 18 but below the top of the box. This was with like 21 seconds left. Kambrea took her sweet time to get to the ball, which worked out. She hit a ball that was to the backpost and either she was scoring or somebody on our team was there to put it away. The shot curled in and hit the inside of the backpost and into the net with one second left on the clock. A lot of you may not know this, but if the horn goes off while the ball is in the air the goal can be disallowed. The ball has to be in the net for the goal to count. That’s why the coaches were trying to hurry her. Guess she knew what she was doing. Our defense played great in the second half. The intercepted balls, completed passes out of the back, and made runs out of the back which put a ton of pressure on Lansing’s backline and they didn’t know how to deal with it. That second half is how we need to play from the start of the game. Keep the ball and bodies moving and try to put constant pressure on the other team's defense. We move on to the next one tonight at home against Bonner. No time to really enjoy this one. Proud of the girls for a great response in the second half!

JV Girls Soccer - Coach Weirick

JV v. Gardner

Our Lady Cardinals hosted Gardner and made a great defensive effort against a tough opponent. We played against talented players and strong wind and continued to make significant progress as a team. Some players were given new positions and showed great flexibility, and we did much better communicating with each other.

Our major focus during this game was on our positioning, and our midfield did a great job shifting together and recovering when necessary. As for our defense, they were faced with some pretty quick outside midfielders and forwards; and they showed great effort keeping up with them. Forwards did a good job pressuring their back line as they tried to feed it into the midfield. Overall, Gardner was a tough opponent, and although we conceded 0-5 to the Trailblazers, our Cardinals never gave up and continued to progress as a team throughout the match!

JV vs. Barstow

This was a super short game. Only two 20-minute halves! As a result, it took the girls a little while to gain their momentum. However, defensively; the girls worked extremely well together. They moved as a unit and were able to shift to mark attacking players with ease. We kept Barstow from scoring in the first half (and the second). During the next half, the girls did an excellent job passing the ball. I felt like we were working as a team and honestly had some pretty decent opportunities to score. Ava Dines was aggressive and worked hard on the wing to make things happen. Karley Owens had a couple of opportunities up top that looked promising! I was proud of the girls.

JV v. Ottawa

On Thursday, our Cards geared up to head to Ottawa to face the Cyclones. As their name suggests, the wind acted as such (again) and we had to make adjustments to our game. We focused more on short passes and possession due to a shorter field and windy conditions. Many players found the opportunity to try new positions, and we found some promising new combinations in the process!

The Cardinals ended the match 2-0 against Ottawa with not only some incredible shots on the offensive side but many incredible moments on the defensive end as well. We did a great job of putting what we have been practicing-specifically overlapping runs- into real game scenarios. Overall, our girls played as a unit and are making great strides as a team!

JV v. Lansing

On Monday, our soccer team traveled to Lansing to face the Lions- our first game this season on a pretty thick grass field is different from what we are used to. We had to make some adjustments during warmups to acclimate to this, but our Cardinals figured out the new terrain very quickly. Similar to our warmup, we had to adjust early in the game due to conceding a goal early on.

However, due to our communication and hard work, we were able to come back and score three goals. This would not have been possible without the effort of everyone from the back line up to the forwards. Our major focus today was on utilizing the whole field on offense, and when we improved upon that it opened up a lot of space to give us more time on the ball. We did a great job of taking players one-on-one when necessary, utilizing all of our space, doing give-and-goes, and so much more. As a team, it was clear today that we are taking steps in the right direction!
