April Monthly Newsletter
Glen Avenue Elementary
Principal's Message
Dear Families,
As we welcome the month of April, our character education focus shifts to accountability. This vital trait helps our students understand the importance of taking responsibility for their actions and decisions. We encourage you to discuss with your children how being accountable can positively impact their school experience and relationships with peers and teachers. By fostering accountability at home and in school, we aim to build a community of trustworthy and dependable individuals.
Additionally, with the changing weather, we often see an increase in lost outerwear. Please remind your children to write their names on their jackets, sweaters, and other belongings. This simple step can significantly reduce the number of items in our lost and found. Speaking of which, don't forget to check the lost and found regularly for any missing items.
Lastly, I want to emphasize the importance of regular attendance. Consistent attendance is crucial for academic success and helps students stay engaged and connected with their learning. Don’t forget to check the school newsletter often, we update it with important information throughout the month. Thank you for your continued support in making our school a nurturing and effective learning environment.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Michele McGoogan

April’s Teacher Feature is sponsored by Coastal Comfort Heating and Air Conditioning and VP Shoes - Vernon Powell. Meet Brittany George Helgason my March Teacher of The Month! Brittany teaches 3rd grade at Glen Avenue Elementary School. She was inspired to teach thanks to her own 3rd grade teacher. This year, she’s really enjoyed the science portion of the curriculum, and just adores her class! Join me in congratulating Brittany, as she inducted into my Hall of Fame for the 2024-2025 school year!

GRADE LEVEL & SPECIALS NEWS
Grade 2
Happy Spring families! In second grade we are continuing to bloom and grow in all areas. Scholars are in the middle of their Freddie Ramos chapter book series unit. Students study characters’ actions, dialogue and traits to draw conclusions about the text. Students will be working on creative writing as a wrap up to this unit where they will have the chance to invent their own super power and add another chapter to the last book. In phonics we are wrapping up unpredictable vowel teams and will be beginning to learn about r-controlled vowel patterns. In Social Studies students are currently learning about amazing women in our world who have made a difference. Students will also learn about how communities change over time. In Science we are going to explore erosion. In Math students have been working hard to represent numbers in different ways, master their basic facts, solve number stories, and we will be adding within a thousand.
Grade 3
Happy Spring!
In ELA, we are finishing the Indigenous People unit and will begin the novel, Charlotte’s Web. We will also begin preparing to take the MCAP which will begin the last week of April. In Math, we will be learning all about fractions. We will be identifying and labeling fractions and then will be comparing fractions. Check out the Topic links for an overview of the units.
In Science, we will be working on our Animals Through TIme unit. Scholars will focus on how animals and their environments have changed throughout time. In Social Studies we will be working on our Economics unit.

ELA MCAP April 28-May 1
Math MCAP May 5-8
Grade 4
Spring is finally here, and we are so excited to share all the amazing things happening in 4th grade! In ELA we will begin our final unit in which students will read the novel, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. In this unit, students dig deeply into how families shape a person's identity, values, and beliefs and how relationships with others can change a person's identity. Students also explore what it means to have good fortune and how a person's view on fortune varies depending on his/her values and beliefs. In Math we will focus on developing an understanding of decimals and decimal notation by connecting fractions and decimals. Your child will work with and compare decimals through the hundredths place. An understanding of equivalent fractions will be used to add a fraction with a denominator of 10 and a fraction with a denominator of 100. Topic 13 we will extend their skills by converting units of length, capacity, weight, and mass within the customary and metric measurement systems. You can help by using metric units to do some measuring activities together. In Social Studies we will describe six aspects of life in colonial Williamsburg: education, trades, social life, government, slavery, and religion. We will also compare and contrast life in colonial Williamsburg with life in the students’ community. In Science we will continue to explore energy! Students investigate how energy is stored, how it can make objects move, and how collisions transfer energy between objects. Students also construct chain reaction machines to explore the many different ways that energy can be transferred.
Please continue to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Grade 5
SPRING HAS SPRUNG! We are so excited in fifth grade to see our students BLOSSOM. They have come so far this year and GROWN so much. In reading we are finishing up the year with the book “A Wrinkle in Time” which is a wonderful science fiction story the students are sure to enjoy. In math we are exploring line plots and utilizing the data to solve problems, which will help us during our testing period coming up soon. Moving forward we are looking at volume and converting measurements. In science we have been looking at Earth’s place in the universe, which has led us on some great discussions of planets, stars and other galaxies. Finally, in social studies we have been focused on the Civil War and the changes it brought to America in the years afterwards. It has been a great year so far in fifth grade and we are looking forward to finishing up strong so our students can show the bright, beautiful FLOWERS they are becoming.
Mrs. Krider's Class
Let’s SHOP till we DROP! In our new unit our class will discuss how humans all have needs and wants. Needs are things we must have to live. Wants are things we would like to have but do not need to live. Throughout this unit, scholars will participate in a variety of activities that help them explore their needs and wants. Scholars are first introduced to needs and wants as they shop with Connie in the Leveled Book, Connie the Consumer. In this book, Connie and her friend make a shopping list of items Connie needs. Our scholars will review examples of needs and when they might be able to consider purchasing wants. In another lesson, scholars sort different items into needs and wants. As you review student work at home, encourage scholars to examine their requests as needs or wants. "What Are Needs? What Are Wants?" Who's a Producer? Who's a Consumer? "Consumers and Producers," Can you be both? It is important for scholars to know that they can be both consumers and producers. Please send Mrs. Krider photos of shopping excursions (via talking points) with your child so we can share with the class!
PE
We are starting our Volleyball Unit!
○ Students will learn to volley and strike a ball.
○ Students will learn a type of volleyball game known as Newcomb.
Easter Fun!
● During your child’s PE class, they will be doing a Fitness Easter Egg Hunt!
● Students will need to find an egg and open it to find out what exercise they will be performing.
ART
Hello Gator Fam! During the month of April, our artists will be participating in creating things relating to the joys and colors of Spring. Students will also be creating some 3-dimensional art projects.
MEDIA
For the month of April, we have a lot of exciting things happening in Media! All grades will be participating in various STEM activities, as well as learning/reviewing how to code. We will learn all about how to create algorithms in order to operate our Bee Bots, Dash Bots, and Ozobots.
For Earth Day, we will learn about the importance of reducing waste, recycling, and practicing green Gator behavior even during our STEM activities. As we practice the engineering design process in STEM, I would like to ask students to bring in any recyclable materials (paper towel and toilet paper rolls, plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, etc) that they can use for our STEM projects. Our projects are inspired by a variety of books that we have read in Media, such as How to Code A Sandcastle by Josh Funk, Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty, and Whirligigs by Carole Boston Weatherford.
This year, I had over 125 students participate in the Delmarva Shorebirds Hit the Books incentive, where students read and recorded four titles of books that they read to earn 2 game ticket vouchers. Our school’s Shorebirds game will be held on Friday, April 11th at 7:05 PM. Don’t forget to redeem your vouchers online (includes a small convenience fee) PRIOR TO the game night. We hope to see you there!
