Weekly Update

Dear Elmore School Families,

We began the week with a full Harvest Super Moon and record high temperatures in the 80's and ended the week with frigid, frosty mornings, but plenty of sunshine! We have officially made it past the first 6 weeks of school and our routines in the classroom are well established. New friendships and old are flourishing.

During writing this week, students worked on revising and editing and began the publishing (final copy ) process with their personal narratives. We reviewed phonics rules this week, so students had a collection of different words incorporating all the things they have learned this year. I also spent time doing some individual decoding fluency assessments. These assessments help me determine specific strengths and deficits.

During math, first graders began their second unit which has a focus on solving story problems by using drawing and numbers to make sense of the story situation. Second graders are matching compare story problems with equations and tape (linear) diagrams. Third graders are getting familiar with using drawings and tape diagrams to represent multiplication situations.

This week we launched our first science Unit with a focus on plant growth and interactions. This week students made models of 3 different types of tree seeds to explore how different types of seeds disperse and different ways and the role animals play in seed dispersal.

We spend a beautiful sunny morning outdoors on Friday as we had our Introduction to ECO Lesson. We talked about the 3 cares (our guiding expectations); Care for Yourself, Care for each other, Care for the environment, played a fun owl and mice tag game, we choose Nature Names and made Nature Name necklaces, and made some observations about leaves, then students chose a leaf to make a diagram of in their ECO Journals. Next week we will walk to the state Park for our our first official ECO lesson. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer, so I can make sure your background check has been completed.

PBIS: Positive Behavior Interventions ad Supports is the system we use for managing student behavior. Part of this system is having clear expectations, and a system of supports and Interventions for supporting these expectations. Overall, students are rewarded for positive behaviors. At the Elmore School we have a system of earning tickets for positive behaviors and following expectations. Students can earn tickets for exhibiting positive behavior as well as for coming to school on time and turning in their reading logs and folders. At the end of the week, tickets are used as currency at our school store. All students must pay 5 tickets to participate in "Fun Friday. The remainder of their tickets can be used to "buy" fun pencils, fun erasers, 1 piece of candy, or treasure box items, etc. They may also use tickets to buy non tangible things such as Stuffy Day, no shoes day, or to read a book to the class. Students may also choose to donate tickets to earn a class reward. During Fun Friday, we spend the end of the day playing!

The other part of our behavior system is a series of steps. When students are not following expectations, we use a system of steps to address the behavior . Click the link below to view these steps for both minor and major behaviors.
