Tomahawk Elementary - March 2026
Question of the Month
What do I do if we have recently moved or are planning to move?
You should contact the Tomahawk office regarding address changes.
- If you have recently moved out of the Tomahawk area, please contact the office so we can update your child's school records and verify your options. Please provide a proof of residency for the new location (utility bill- gas, water or electric or rental agreement).
- If you are moving into a neighboring school district and want to stay at Tomahawk for 26-27, you will need to complete a transfer application. Check the OSD website here for more information on the Transfer Process.
- If you are not planning to return to Tomahawk for 26-27, please let the office know as soon as possible.

Bond 2026: Big Impact, No Tax Rate Increase
Mail-in ballots are due Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Registered voters who live within the Olathe Public Schools boundaries have the opportunity to vote in a no tax rate increase $389 million mail-in bond election that would impact all Olathe students and staff. Ballots must be received by noon at the Johnson County Election Office on March 3. At this time, in order to ensure your ballot arrives on time, you must drop ballots off in-person directly at the Johnson County Election Office (2101 E Kansas City Rd, Olathe, KS 66061) or one of the designated Ballot Drop Box locations. Click here to read how to drop off your ballot. To learn more about Bond 2026 and the projects included, visit www.olatheschools.org/Bond2026.
Attendance
Students of the Month
Each month there will be a classroom recipient (K-5) chosen by the classroom teacher as someone who displays the expected behaviors of Tomahawk Students showing: We Matter, We are Safe, and We are Prepared. This student helps ensure others know that they: Belong, Matter, and are Loved.
The staff members who work with students outside of the classroom (Art, PE. Music, Library, Counselors, Lunch room staff) will vote on the representative for each classroom. That student will receive a yard sign for the month. We are so Proud of all of our Tomahawk students, and showcase their strengths in many ways through out each grade level and each class. We are excited to celebrate these school wide recipients each month, to continue to show our Tomahawk Expectations!

Prepare for Unpredictable Weather
Spring weather can be unpredictable. Help your children prepare by reminding them to dress in layers and bring a jacket for morning recess. If the weather turns rainy during the day and you need to make other arrangements for your child’s dismissal instructions, please call the office by 2pm so we have ample time to get the information to your child.
The City of Olathe provides information about severe weather awareness including thunderstorms, lightning and tornadoes. Check out the website for facts on the outdoor warning system, watches, warnings, and disaster supplies kits at http://www.olatheks.org/government/fire/safety-tips
Bike Safety
Warmer weather signifies an increase in students riding their bikes to school. Here are a few reminders to keep everyone safe:
· Bike riders should wear a helmet and are encouraged to bring a lock for their bike.
· Parents should talk with their children in advance about traffic safety.
· Drivers should take extra care to watch for children on bikes in school areas.
Reminder: Photo ID REQUIRED EACH TIME You Want to Enter Tomahawk
Please remember that District policy requires us to ask for ID from EVERYONE each time they enter the building. Please remember to have your driver's license or other form of picture ID ready for the camera at the door when you arrive at Tomahawk. If you come to the door without your ID, we will kindly ask you to return to your car to get it.

Lunchroom Cupboard
We had so much fun celebrating KS Lunch Week in January! Our amazing and talented lunchroom staff- Megan Smith, Julie France, Penny Gfeller, Mary Cooper and Elissa Fields along with our equally amazing and talented Art teacher, Mrs. Ingraham worked together to create a visual representation of "Lunch Among the Stars" for our students. The students had a blast eating among planets, rocket ships and among stars hanging from the ceiling. A huge thank you to Richard and Mikayla Fussel for coming in and lending a helping hand with decorating and handing out prizes!
PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports)
We have recognized almost 125,000 tickets this year for positive behavior! Students have been redeeming their tickets for reading time with Scoobie, styling Mrs. Baucum’s hair, and many other exciting experiences!

Cold Weather Guidelines
Recess is an important part of the elementary school day. Help your child anticipate the change in weather by encouraging them to dress in layers and bring a jacket to school. Labeling outerwear with your student’s name helps when coats are misplaced, left on the playground or identical to other students. We have outdoor recess unless there is precipitation or the temperature falls below 20 degrees; limited outdoor recess when 10-19 degrees; and indoor recess when below 10 degrees. This link gives more information on winter weather guidelines.
Olathe School District Guidelines for Outdoor Recess (the playground blacktop will need to be clear of snow and ice):
Outdoor recess will be held if:
- Outside air temperature and/or wind chill is 20° (F) or greater
- There is no falling precipitation
Limited outdoor recess will be held if:
- Outside air temperature and/or wind chill is between 10° and 19° (F)
- There is no falling precipitation
Indoor recess will be held if:
- Outside air temperature and/or wind chill is lower than 10° (F) or there is falling precipitation
All students will need to go out with their class for recess unless there is a doctor's note indicating the student needs to stay inside. Please have them bring a warm coat, gloves, winter shoes and head covering for these cold days.
Many Tools Help Parents Learn of School Cancellations
Read our District Inclement Weather FAQs for more details
The winter weather season is here, so parents are encouraged to stay connected with the district in several ways to learn of school cancellations. When the chance for severe or inclement weather looms, we will only post the cancellation of school, athletic events and other activities. We will not post when school, athletic events and activities are proceeding as scheduled.
If school is canceled due to snow or bad weather, the information will be available in these ways:
- Blackboard notification to parents and staff via text and email information on file
- Local television and radio stations
- District website — http://www.olatheschools.org
- Facebook — go to "Olathe Public Schools"
- Twitter — look for "Olathe Schools"
- The Olathe Public Schools mobile app
- By calling the district information line, 913-780-8000
Any parent who is in the district’s system, and who has included a cell phone number, will receive a text message in case of the cancellation of school. If there has been a change in a parent’s phone number or email address since enrollment, please notify the child’s school
No Early Dismissal
If school is in session when deteriorating weather conditions are present, regular dismissal time will be observed rather than dismissing students early from school. District administrators are mindful of safety issues such as transportation, particularly for those students who normally ride the bus or are driven to and from school; lack of supervision at home because of an unscheduled dismissal; and the uncertainty of sending children away from a protected school environment and out into hazardous weather conditions.
Facility Usage/Building Rental
If school is canceled for the entire day, all facility usage/building rentals will also be canceled.
If school has been in session all day but evening district activities are canceled, facility usage/building rentals will also be canceled.
Athletics and Activities
The final decision about whether to cancel school activities will be made at the district level. Administrators understand the importance of these activities, but the safety of students is always of greater importance.
