A Message from Dr. Di Nicola
Good evening, JLS Mustang Students, Staff, and Families!
🐎 What an Extraordinary Opening Week, Mustangs! 💙💛
In my thirty-one years as an educator and school leader, I have never witnessed a greater opening to a school year—especially one that began with five consecutive school days—than what we experienced this past week at J.L. Simpson Middle School!
From the very first bell, our Mustangs across all grade levels demonstrated an incredible willingness to dive into learning, arrive to class on time while mastering new schedules, and get to know their teachers and one another.
Even more inspiring were the countless acts of Mustang leadership happening throughout our halls: students helping one another open lockers, find classrooms, get organized for success, and—perhaps most importantly—helping our newest Mustangs make friends and feel genuinely welcomed into our school community. 🌟
Our Mustang Professional Staff matched that energy every step of the way, from the moment students entered our doors until they departed Friday for a very well-deserved, restful weekend! Their enthusiasm, care, and leadership shined brightly as they facilitated activities designed to build meaningful connections, developed classroom norms incorporating student voice, and began teaching our students how to Lead Like a Mustang! through our shared expectations as a school.
To our families, congratulations and thank you for the extraordinary courtesy, kindness, patience, and understanding you demonstrated throughout this opening week. Your focused and caring support of both our staff and your Mustangs helped make this exceptional start possible. 💙
👏 We also extend tremendous appreciation to our Parent-Teacher Organization, beautifully led by President Blaire Ring and Vice President Rachel Marvin, along with Treasurer Tammy Strobeck, Secretary Melissa Mitchell, and Members at Large Zach Cummings, Laura Karwoski, and Heather Gast. Their relentless efforts to welcome students, families, and staff with such kindness have already made a wonderful impact—and our August 20 PTO meeting was the most highly attended PTO meeting we have seen in recent years! We look forward to engaging even more families in PTO-sponsored activities and school events throughout the year because, ultimately, we are one united Mustang front! 🐎💪
And now, onward to Week Two! Expect to see academic engagement increase as our Mustangs dig deeper into their learning, while Advisory and Resource provide opportunities for students to further develop meaningful Quarter 1 Goals.
We will also complete our MAP Growth Assessments, with Reading on Thursday, August 27, and Mathematics on Friday, August 28. Let’s carry the tremendous energy, kindness, leadership, and Mustang pride of our opening week forward into everything we do.
Have a beautiful week ahead, Mustangs—let’s make it another GREAT one! 📚🎯🚀 #SimpsonStrong #MustangPride #OneUnitedFront

Student Arrival at JLS Main Doors: No Earlier Than 8:10 AM
Our doors open for student entry at 8:10 AM each morning.
For everyone’s safety, we respectfully ask that students do not wait outside the main entrance before 8:10 AM, as there is no adult supervision outside the building prior to that time.
We kindly ask parents and guardians to plan their morning arrival so that their Mustang’s departure from the car line is timed as closely as possible with the opening of our entrance doors. We ask our walkers and bike riders to please plan their arrival accordingly as well.
We truly appreciate your thoughtfulness and partnership in helping us provide a safe and welcoming start to each school day. Your cooperation makes such a meaningful difference in helping us care for all of our students.
Thank you so very much for your understanding, support, and continued commitment to keeping our Mustangs safe! 😊💙

Important Required Guidelines Regarding Food/Drink at JLS
🍎 Food & Beverage Expectations at JLS
- Classroom food/drinks: Students may have food or drinks in classrooms at teacher discretion and in accordance with all LCPS wellness and allergy-aware expectations.
- 🩺 Medical snack needs: Students who need food/snacks during the school day for medical reasons should contact the school nurse, René Pettit, at Rene.Pettit@lcps.org so appropriate support can be provided.
- 🥤 Beverages: Drinks are permitted in hallways and classrooms only in sealable, closed-top containers.
- This applies to all beverages, including those purchased from outside businesses, restaurants, cafés, grocery stores, etc.
- 🚫 Eating locations: Students may not eat in hallways, at lockers, or in other undesignated areas. Food may only be consumed in designated locations.
- 🥪 Family food deliveries: Parents/families may deliver breakfast or lunch for their own child and leave it on the designated bookshelf in the main office.
- Students may retrieve food only when heading directly to the cafeteria for their scheduled breakfast/lunch.
- Food may not be taken to classrooms, lockers, or elsewhere without school leadership permission.
- Families must notify their student before school or by email that food / lunch boxes have been delivered. While main office staff may be able to alert teachers that a Mustang's food / lunch box has been delivered for the student to retrieve as a courtesy, our main office staff is not responsible for students picking up their delivered lunches.
- Students may not order food for delivery to JLS themselves.
- 🎉 Special events: Staff providing food at special events will follow LCPS requirements, including:
- Providing options for students with dietary restrictions.
- Maintaining allergy-aware practices.
- Ensuring all students are welcomed, safe, and included.
- 💚 Student responsibility: JLS staff will support schoolwide nutrition and wellness, while students are expected to:
- Know and communicate their individual dietary restrictions.
- Follow appropriate preventive/safe practices.
- Ask staff questions whenever they have concerns or need assistance.

JLS New Information and Opportunities
Fall MAP Growth Assessments This Week
Our students will be participating in the Fall MAP Growth Assessment in all grade levels on August 27 and August 28. The Reading MAP test will be completed at the start of the day on Thursday, August 27 and the Math MAP test will be completed at the start of the day on Friday, August 28.
After departing their morning welcoming areas, students will report to their Advisory class at 8:30 AM for MAP Testing. We will be operating on an adjusted bell schedule during testing days.
Please ensure that your student brings their fully charged Chromebook to school for testing. Thank you for helping our Mustangs be prepared for a successful testing day!
The MAP Growth Assessment serves as a pre-test in supporting student progress and achievement on their end-of-year Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. This assessment also allows our educators to review current student performance to design appropriate authentic learning experiences where our learners can apply skills in areas of interest.
The resources linked below in the NWEA MAP Family Tool Kit are helpful in providing more information about the MAP Growth Assessment and its purpose in determing current student performance level in a variety of subjects, namely English and Mathematics in our school division.
If you have any questions about the NWEA MAP Growth Assessment in English / Mathematics, please feel free to connect with your child's teacher or Laura.Bolyard@lcps.org (School-Based Instructional Facilitator), Jennifer.Burns@lcps.org (Instructional Facilitator, Technology) or Jarrod.Dungan@lcps.org (School Testing Coordinator / Assistant Principal).
Early Dismissals and Bus Passes
If your student(s) need an early dismissal, please remember that you must come to the main entrance to show your photo ID to sign your student(s) out. For your convenience, we recommend that you avoid early dismissals during lunch times and close to regular dismissal time. Our parking lot tends to become quite congested starting around 2:45pm. Lunch time is busy with students moving throughout the building, cafeteria, or our outdoor space. It may take longer for your student to be dismissed during these extra busy times.
Bus passes (for transportation on a bus other than the student assigned bus) will not be permitted for the first several weeks of school as our students and bus drivers adjust to their new routine. Be sure to watch out for bus pass start date and procedures in an upcoming newsletter.

Step One - Registration
To be eligible all registration forms must be submitted online through the LCPS activity registration website.
Click here to access the registration website!
Step Two - Completed Physical, AND Submit First Page to Mr. Carpenter
Effective July 1, 2025, a revised Virginia state law requires students participating in intramural sports during the 2026-2027 school year to submit documentation of a physical exam before joining any activities.
As a result of this change, students and families should print the required LCPS Preparticipation Evaluation Form, bring it to a physician for evaluation and signature, make a copy of the physical for your personal records, and then turn in the first page only of the preparticipation physical examination form to the school-based intramural coordinator (samuel.carpenter@lcps.org).

Community Feedback on the FY 28 Budget
Please provide Feedback on the FY28 Budget!
Parents/Guardians/Staff:
We know our community wants to have a say in how LCPS allocates its budget to best support student learning and achievement. We are asking our community for your thoughts on what the School Board might consider as they develop the FY28 budget. Our teachers, counselors, principals, school nutrition workers, and bus drivers work to support students throughout the year and are part of the budget that funds school programs and classroom instruction from early childhood through graduation. Our budget also supports facilities and maintenance, staff benefits, technology, and overall operations that make our division thrive.
We need our staff and community’s input to learn what is most important to everyone and help inform our next steps. To do that, we are asking everyone to participate in a ThoughtExchange to share their ideas and let us know how they feel about other ideas the community suggests. We are using ThoughtExchange so everyone has a chance to share their perspectives and understand what’s most important to the group.
Beginning August 24, you can participate in the ThoughtExchange and return anytime before September 15 to rate new ideas. You can also find it on www.lcps.org/thoughtexchange.
Your input is valued and appreciated.
LCPS E-Bike Safety Guidance
🛴 Important Safety Update: E-Bikes, Scooters & Other Motorized Devices
To help keep all Mustangs, staff, and visitors safe, LCPS is reinforcing expectations for motorized and electric-powered personal transportation devices on school property.
The most important thing to know:
Students may use an e-bike, e-scooter, or other permitted personal mobility device to travel to and from school, but they may NOT ride or operate it on school property.
When arriving at Simpson: Students must get off and walk their device once they reach school property and take it directly to the designated parking area.
When leaving Simpson: Students must walk their device to the school property line before getting on, starting, or riding it.
🚲 What devices are included?
The prohibition on use while on school grounds includes:
- Personal transportation devices: e-bikes, e-scooters, mopeds, motorized skateboards, golf carts, go-karts, low-speed vehicles, surreys, and battery-operated ride-on vehicles.
- Motorized/electronic toys: drones, model airplanes, helicopters, hovercraft, and similar remote-controlled or electronic devices.
⛑️ Safety First
Helmets should be worn at all times when riding. Families are encouraged to review safe riding practices with students, including following traffic laws and being especially cautious around pedestrians, vehicles, buses, and school arrival/dismissal areas.
What happens if a student rides on school property?
Our first priority is helping students understand and follow the new expectation. Students who ride a personal mobility device on school property will first receive verbal reminders. Continued concerns will result in parent/guardian contact before disciplinary action is considered. Repeated violations may result in the student losing the privilege of bringing the device onto school property.
📘 Student Rights & Responsibilities
The LCPS Student Rights & Responsibilities (SR&R) has been updated to clarify that School Board policies and school rules apply while students are traveling to and from school, including when they are “using a personal mobility device, such as an e-bike or scooter.”
Please help us keep Simpson safe by reminding your Mustang:
Ride to campus → Walk on campus → Park your device
Walk off campus → Then ride
Thank you for partnering with us to promote a safe arrival and dismissal for everyone in our Simpson community!

- Advisory activities focused on TEAM BUILDING, JLS SCHOOL-WIDE EXPECTATIONS + EVENTS, SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING, and STUDENT LEADERSHIP and ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES
- Grade-level seminar activities aligned with the best possible support in being a Grade 6, 7, or 8 student at JLS, including the incorporation of our new JLS Student Mustang Mentorship Program.
- Intervention / enrichment activities focused on each and every Mustang's educational experience
- Fun Fridays will occur for each grade-level team in a variety of formats...every Friday!
- Students who are changing classes from one block to another during the middle of a period (EXAMPLE: From Block 1 to 2) will have three (3) minutes to proceed to their classes.
- Grade 6 students will have their own lunch devoted to their level. Grades 7-8 students will eat on our BLUE and GOLD lunch time shifts. Lunch shifts for Grades 7-8 students are determined based on what class in which they are enrolled for Block 5-6A / B depending on the day. Lunch shifts cannot be changed due to their being tied to student course enrollment...so we can all work together to make new friends as part of our journey together to enjoy lunch every day!
- All students assist their classmates and teachers at the end of the day with tidying up the classroom space, placing chairs on desks for custodial cleaning, and listening to any end of day announcements from our school leadership team.
- Students who have after school activities are expected to report directly to their supervising staff member at the dismissal bell and remain with them until they are picked up by LCPS transportation, their parent/guardian, or walk home after their activity is completed.
WHEN DO DOORS OPEN FOR STUDENTS EACH MORNING?
School doors open at 8:10 a.m. and there is no adult supervision outside of the building prior to that time.
To ensure the safety of all students, we ask for your support in helping us follow the established arrival guidelines:
Car riders: Parents may drop off students by using the car rider line beginning at 8:10 a.m. Please remain in your vehicle while students exit safely.
Please follow the guidance of the staff members on site each morning to keep your car moving through the traffic line to ensure that we are collaborating together to make our drop-off expedient, safe, and supportive to all families.
Remember that when driving through our car line that your cautious attention to all around you is very important as pedestrians are often crossing through on crosswalks. Maintain a slow, careful speed through our car line to promote the highest quality safety for all.
Remember that you must turn right out of our parking lot after completing drop-off or pick-up after school. Follow the signage posted by LCPS accordingly.
Walkers: Students who walk to school should arrive at the door to JLS no earlier than 8:10 a.m.
Our main entrance door will open at 8:10 AM at the sound of the first bell.
Each day students will report to welcoming areas supported by Simpson staff members and are required to remain in that location until release to advisory and the beginning of our school day.
WELCOMING AREAS by GRADE LEVEL:
8th Grade - Auditorium
7th Grade - Main Gym
6th Grade - Auxiliary Gym
AT WHAT TIME DO CLASSES BEGIN?
Students will be released from their welcoming areas by 8:23 AM to report to their Block 1-2 A or B day course as appropriate by the 8:30 AM tardy bell.
DOES MY MUSTANG HAVE ANY WARNING ABOUT THE TARDY BELLS TO CLASSES RINGING?
Yes, we ring a warning chime one minute prior to the tardy bell for every class block, including the half-block tardy bells.
We will have many staff members around to support our students in arriving at their locations each and every day, so please encourage your Simpson Mustangs to find any one of us to help whenever needed!
WHEN DOES THE FINAL BELL RING FOR THE DAY?
The last bell will ring at 3:18 PM to signify the end of our regular school day.
WILL THERE BE ACTIVITY BUSES THIS YEAR?
Yes, we will have activity buses available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays this year to support after school clubs/activities/intramural sports. Our activity buses will not start right away at the beginning of the year, so stay tuned for when they will be available.
After school activities on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays will take place from 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM. More information regarding after school activities / intramural sports to come very soon!
*NEW* LCPS Dress Code Policy 8270 Updates - READ CAREFULLY!
The Loudoun County School Board recently approved updates to Student Dress Code, Policy 8270. The changes take effect for the start of the 2026/27 school year and include updated clothing coverage requirements, physical education attire expectations and clarification about items that are and are not permitted at school.
Families are encouraged to review the updated policy with their students before the first day of school to help ensure they understand the new expectations.
Below is a summary of the updates to the Student Dress Cody policy:
On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the School Board voted to update the Student Dress Code Policy 8270.
The updates will take effect in time for the students’ return to campuses this fall. The updates were considered thoughtfully, with community feedback informing the School Board and staff’s recommendations.
Please talk with your student to ensure they are aware of the changes and help them choose clothing that meets the updated guidelines. Please talk with your dean or counselor if you have any questions after reading the policy or if your family needs any support meeting these updated requirements.
Below are some notable changes in effect this fall:
Students’ clothing must be non-transparent and meet additional coverage requirements:
Tops must cover the sides, mid-back and lower back, and extend to the waist, and feature a neckline that does not extend below the imaginary horizontal line connecting the armpits
Bottoms (e.g., pants, sweatpants, shorts, skirt or leggings) must provide full coverage of the lower torso and buttocks
One-piece outfits, such as jumpsuits or dresses that meet coverage requirements, are also acceptable
Shoes must be worn
Students may wear hats or other headwear that does not obscure the face. The hood must be worn down on a hoodie. Attire of religious, cultural or ethnic significance, e.g., head coverings and hairstyles, is permitted.
For physical education, tops and bottoms must meet coverage requirements; shoes must be closed-toe and heel, and securely fastened to the foot.
Note: Other classes or activities may also have separate clothing requirements for safety purposes (i.e. Health and Physical Education shirts, athletics gear, etc.)
Students may not:
Wear blankets or robes to school. Pajama tops and bottoms that meet coverage requirements are allowed
Wear clothing that intentionally exposes undergarments (the unintentional exposure of undergarments would not result in disciplinary action)
Read the updated Student Dress Code Policy 8270 and find all policies at the LCPS Policy Review Page.

Read About Student Personal Devices + LCPS Policy!
LCPS Policies 8650 and 8655: Please read carefully with your Mustang!
Please note the following in terms of Student Personal Device Use:
Middle school students must keep their devices silent and not visible, stored in their locker during the school day. Personal devices may be used before or after the school day.
The above includes any and all devices, including cell phones, earbuds, iPads, etc. :)
NOTE: Students may have wired earbuds/headphones for classes in which their teachers permit them to use these devices. The devices may only be connected to the Chromebook.
Daily Expectation:
Before entering the doors at JL Simpson MS, students should:
Turn off all personal devices.
Store devices in their locker upon arrival in their grade-level house from the Welcoming Area.
Students with documented accommodations through an IEP, Section 504 Plan, Individualized Health Care Plan, or Limited English Proficiency Plan may continue to use personal devices as outlined in their approved plans.
We also request that all families refrain from texting or calling our Mustangs' personal devices during the school day to help support this new LCPS policy and our engagement of its content at JLS.
WHAT IF WE NEED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH OUR MUSTANGS?
- Please contact us at 571-252-2840 if you need to speak to your Mustang. We can always find them for you!
- We will allow any of our Mustangs to call home to their families as needed using our school lines...never a problem!
- Teach your Mustangs to use their e-mail accounts regularly alongside our own school expectations for academic engagement and communication with their teachers. You are more than welcome to touch base with them in that manner!
This policy underscores our commitment to creating an optimal learning environment free from unnecessary distractions. By adhering to these expectations, we help ensure that students can fully engage with instruction, collaborate with their peers, and participate actively in classroom activities.
We appreciate your partnership and support in reinforcing these expectations at home and encouraging your student(s) to embrace the benefits of a focused, distraction-free learning environment. Together, we can help all Mustangs maximize their learning opportunities and achieve success!
