Mary Hogan Family Newsletter

Update from Principal Jen Kravitz
October 27, 2023
Dear Mary Hogan Families,
It has been a great week at school. Students have been working on their acting skills in 5th grade as Shakespeare: Its Elementary actors have been visiting. Buddy classrooms have been having visits with each other. Students have been out and about - in down town Middlebury as well as in Battell Woods. And, students have been celebrating the fall season with marigolds, pumpkin songs, and more.
We will be celebrating the cooler weather this coming week with an All School Fun Run on Thursday afternoon. Students in grades 3-5 will be going off campus and running out the back and along the sidewalk in the Buttolph neighborhood to the ice rink. Younger students will be running on campus. It is great to see everyone outside and exercising together!
Be well,
Jen

A Note about Holidays
Our Family Handbook explains that we do not celebrate holidays (including upcoming ones like Halloween) at school. We acknowledge various holidays and classes may think about general principles behind some holidays - gratitude, caring, community - or we try to tell a more complete story about the holiday (ex. Thanksgiving). We do not celebrate individual holidays at school. We believe that informing students around the celebration of holidays can be the work of schools; however we do not celebrate, decorate, or otherwise condone holidays in classes or as a school. Education is different from celebration.
Please do not send your child in in a costume on Halloween. There will be other celebrations in the year - like Character Dress Up Day - when they will have a chance to dress up in a costume.
This Week at Mary Hogan
October Update from Art
Shakespeare Practice
Our 5th grade students are working to learn, practice, and perform "Romeo and Juliet". The amazing actors from Shakespeare: Its Elementary have been working with students to situate the play and the language in time as well as to connect the students with acting. They did this during this week a bit with puppets, maneuvering and acting out the lines with little puppets before doing so themselves.
All School Meeting
The 5th graders were awesome leaders this week as they led the All School Meeting on Wednesday. The focus of the meeting and the month is being principled, and the 5th graders focused on this as well as on kindness and inclusion. They had us all dressing in orange to symbolize Unity Day and taught us about this day where we recognize that through kindness and inclusion we all feel more safe and connected to one another - and we can prevent bullying.
