Building a Love of Reading at Pray-Woodman!
This year, one of our goals at Pray-Woodman is to get students excited about reading and help them discover a love for books! Each quarter, we will introduce a different activity designed to build excitement around reading, both at school and at home.
Quarter 1: Book Battle!
Our students are currently participating in a fun Book Battle Bracket! Teachers are reading different books aloud, and students get to vote for their favorites. Books will go head-to-head until we crown our ultimate student favorite! It's a fun way to introduce students to new books and build excitement around reading.
Quarter 2: Read at Home Challenge!
Get ready, families! Our second-quarter challenge is all about reading together at home!
We are challenging students to read or be read to at home as much as possible. Whether it's a bedtime story, reading with a sibling, listening to a parent read aloud, or enjoying a favorite book independently, every minute counts!
Here's how it works:
Students read or listen to books at home.
- Parents log their child's reading minutes using a simple Google Form.
- We will track reading minutes throughout the challenge.
- The class in EACH grade level with the most reading minutes will win a special prize!
While we love a little friendly competition, our biggest goal is to encourage families to spend time reading together. When children see that reading is important to the people they love, they begin to value it too! Even 10–15 minutes of reading together each day can make a difference.
More information about the challenge, including how to log reading minutes, will be shared at Parent-Teacher Conferences.
Thank you for partnering with us to make reading a priority and inspire our students to become lifelong readers. Let's get reading, Pray-Woodman!

A message from Asst. Principal Mrs. Callie Harris
Hello, Pray-Woodman Families!
With the cooler temperatures showing up this week, it is finally feeling like fall! I am hoping to get some cozy time inside with my family this month and hope you do, too!
This month on our social media page we have asked our staff what they love about working at Pray-Woodman (if you haven’t seen this series, check it out on Facebook), some really fun patterns have emerged!
- People and relationships are the heart of PWS! Staff repeatedly mention the people they work with, feeling valued, belonging, and having supportive relationships with colleagues and administrators.
- PWS feels like a community and a family! Words and ideas such as family, community, belonging, valued, loved, and never doing it alone appear repeatedly.
- Doing what is best for students is a shared value! There is a strong sense of "whatever it takes" for kids.
- Support and collaboration make the work better. Staff describe administrators and colleagues as supportive, encouraging, knowledgeable, and willing to jump in.
- Our staff love seeing students grow and succeed!
- PWS has energy and joy! There is a sense that the hard work is balanced by fun, pride, and shared experiences.
Those statements made me feel so good and I hope they make you feel great about sending your students to school everyday!
We’ve asked our staff what they love, but we would love to hear what YOU love about PWS! Email me this month and I would love to share your experiences! Can’t wait to see you at conferences this month; we love seeing, chatting and connecting with you!
