The Literacy Link The Literacy Link

FES Reads for December saw a great increase! There were 59 students who met the requirements for 15 nights of home-reading.Of these readers, 26 were "repeat readers"! Once again, the students were awarded a token for the book vending machine! The January Reading sheets (snowflakes at the bottom) went home before Winter Break!!!!! Please return them January 31st. Keep Reading...Remember, a Falcon who READS is a Falcon who SUCCEEDS!

Our Falcons continue to make gains in Tier 2 Reading Interventions.

18 students learning Letter Names/Sounds.

36 students learning VC/CVC words.

100 students who are fluently and accurately reading independently.

The beginning of January marks the middle of the year DIBELS benchmarking assessment for phonics and fluency/accuracy check in grades K-5. This data will be compared to the BOY benchmarking to determine student progression towards grade level proficiency.

The Calculation Station The Calculation Station

In December, we had 9 new mathletes in grades 3-5 master all of their multiplication facts! That brings us to 21 total! Can we make it to 30 by February? With these hard workers, of course we can!!

Please encourage your child to study his/her math facts (addition for grades K-2 or multiplication for grades 3-5) at home ten minutes a day. Some ideas to help make this successful and fun are below.

Make Flash cards (with the whole fact and answer on the back)

  • Tape the flash cards to common areas for your child to recite - on the bedroom door, refrigerator, the top of their TV, even the back of the toilet! Have them recite the fact and check their answer EVERY time they come in contact with the fact.

  • Keep a set it the car- siblings can quiz one another

  • Keep a set under the pillow, and have students practice for 5 mins before bed

Play Addition or Multiplication War (using a deck of cards)

  • Using only cards 1-9 from all suits, deal out the entire deck evenly among all players.

  • Each player turns over 2 cards and adds them or multiplies them together.

  • The player with the greatest sum/product gets to keep all the players' cards currently being displayed. These cards get placed face down at the bottom of the winning player's deck.

  • Play continues until one player has captured all of their opponents' cards.

Caroline Better Together Caroline Better Together

Please join Caroline Better Together for their Mid-Winter Community Check-In on Wednesday, Jan 22nd at St. Luke's Church in Denton!

This first Community Dinner and Conversation of 2025 will feature updates from our collective impact action teams already working on specific projects to improve life in Caroline County. We’ll have conversations about how you can get involved in creating the positive changes you want for your neighborhood, town and county. Together we will try to envision what we want living in Caroline to be like by 2030 and discuss what needs to happen to make this vision a reality.

As always, dinner starts at 5:30pm, followed by conversation until 7:30pm! RSVPs are appreciated but not required. To RSVP use this link: bit.ly/CBTDinner, or the QR code on the graphic.
