Scituate Named Distinguished High School for STEM curriculum and Career Readiness for Second Consecutive Year
Scituate High School has been named a 2024-2025
Distinguished High School by Project Lead The Way (PLTW) for the second year in a row. This
national recognition highlights the school’s continued commitment to increasing student
access, engagement, and achievement in STEM education and career readiness. Scituate is one
of only five school districts in Rhode Island to have schools receiving this distinction.
“We are honored and proud to receive this recognition,” said Principal Michael Hassell. “To be
named a Distinguished High School, we had to meet specific criteria, including offering a
minimum number of PLTW courses and maintaining strong student enrollment in those
courses.”
Scituate High School currently offers eight unique PLTW courses focused in three career and
technical education academies: Biomedical Science, Computer Science, and Engineering. The
courses engage students in topics such as human body systems, digital electronics, and civil
engineering and architecture. Next year, the high school will expand its offerings to include a
new course in Aerospace Engineering.
More than 32% of students at SHS are currently enrolled in a PLTW course, an increase from
last year, when 30% of students were enrolled, showing growth in student interest and
participation.
“We are proud to honor Scituate High School for their commitment to providing students with
exceptional educational experiences through PLTW programs,” said Dr. David Dimmett, PLTW
President and CEO. "This achievement celebrates their dedication to student achievement and
their focus on empowering students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in
school and a wide range of post-secondary opportunities."
According to PLTW, 92% of high school students have reported that their PLTW course made
them more interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). PLTW
programs also help prepare today’s students for the careers of tomorrow, not only
incorporating STEM skills into their learning but also building students’ collaborative,
teamwork, and communication skills so they can excel in whatever path they choose for their
future.
Scitaute's Rhode Island Civic Leadership Program Liasons
This year Annette Hartley and Molly Sheehan, join alumnus Ava Gregory and Isabella DeFusco (2023-24), as Rhode Island Civic Leadership Program Liasons. They attended monthly meetings at the State House, held a coat drive and participated in a 3 day long summit in April with representatives from the state. They met elected officials, RI Supreme Court justices and many other government leaders. Nettie and Molly did Scituate proud by taking full advantage of this opportunity. Their civic engagement impressed the Secretary of State, Greg Amore, who spoke highly of them. Both young ladies now share an optimism for the future of our state and nation.

Chromebook Danger
Dear Scituate Families,
We are writing to inform you about a concerning and hazardous trend circulating on social media platforms, particularly TikTok, known as the “Chromebook Challenge.” This trend encourages students to insert conductive materials—such as pencil lead, paper clips, aluminum foil, or metallic gum wrappers—into the USB ports or charging areas of their school-issued Chromebooks. The intent is to create electrical short circuits, which can result in sparking, smoke, and even fires. Such actions pose significant risks, including potential injuries, damage to school property, and disruptions to the learning environment. WJAR+6CT Insider+6Parents+6Columbia Borough School District.
In other schools and districts, this behavior has typically led to school evacuations and property damage in neighboring states, including Connecticut. The safety of our students and staff is our utmost priority, and we are taking proactive measures to prevent such dangerous activities in our schools. CT Insider+2Yahoo News+2Parents+2
Consequences for Engaging in This Behavior:
Disciplinary Actions: Students found participating in this activity will face severe disciplinary measures, which may include suspension, in accordance with our district policies and student handbooks.
Financial Responsibility: Families will be held financially responsible for any damages to the facility or property resulting from such actions. The cost to replace a damaged Chromebook can be up to $300.
Legal Implications: Tampering with electronic devices in this manner may be considered criminal behavior, potentially leading to charges such as vandalism or arson https://www.azfamily.com+4CT Insider+4https://www.mysuncoast.com+4
Our Community Standards:
Scituate is proud of its strong, respectful, and responsible school community. Engaging in activities that endanger others or damage property is unacceptable and goes against the values we uphold. We are committed to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.Kitsap Sun+3Greenwich Time+3https://www.mysuncoast.com+3
Parental Guidance:
We urge parents and guardians to have open conversations with their children about the dangers and consequences of participating in such online trends. Encourage them to:
Refrain from engaging in or promoting harmful challenges.
Report any knowledge of such activities to a trusted adult or school official.
Use school-issued devices responsibly and by school policies.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school principal or the district office.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued partnership in ensuring the safety and well-being of our students.
Sincerely,
Scituate Administrative Team

To: High School Students and Families
From: High School Administration and School Resource Officer (SRO)
Subject: Reminder – Food Delivery Policy and Building Safety
Dear Students and Families, May 2, 2025
We want to take a moment to address an important matter related to school safety. Recently, we have observed an increase in students using mobile food delivery services (such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc.) during the school day.
We understand the convenience these services offer, but please note that food deliveries are not permitted during school hours, as outlined in the student handbook. This procedure is in place to help us maintain a safe and secure environment for all students and staff.
Unfortunately, some students have been opening exterior doors to allow delivery drivers into the building. This has primarily occurred before lunchtime and during 8th and 9th periods.
Allowing any unauthorized individuals—no matter their purpose—into the building poses a serious safety concern. These actions create vulnerabilities in our security procedures and increase risks that are otherwise preventable.
Moving forward:
No food deliveries will be accepted at school during the instructional day.
If a delivery driver attempts to enter the building or make a drop-off, they may be subject to a safety check completed by the Police Department. The food will be searched and confiscated.
Any incidents involving unauthorized building access will be documented accordingly.
We ask for your partnership in reinforcing this policy with your student. Our shared goal is to keep our school safe, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring that we uphold these standards together.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Michael Hassell

WARNING: Access to a firearm in the home significantly
increases the risk of suicide, death during domestic violence
disputes, and the unintentional death of children, household
members, or others. If you or a loved one is experiencing distress
and/or depression, call the 988 Suicide and Crisis hotline or text

child or person prohibited from purchasing or possessing firearms
is likely to gain access to them. Failure to securely firearms as
required by law may result in fines and/or criminal prosecution.
