A Note from Mrs. Pilkington

Greetings WPA Families;

Start the School Year Strong: Sleep Habits

A good night’s sleep is one of the best ways to help children start the school year strong! According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), school-age children typically need 9–12 hours of sleep each night. Getting enough rest helps children focus, learn, remember new information, manage emotions, and be ready for a successful school day. Parents can help build healthy habits by establishing a consistent bedtime and wake-up time, creating a calming bedtime routine, encouraging active play during the day, and turning off screens at least one hour before bedtime. The AAP also recommends keeping phones, tablets, and televisions out of bedrooms at night when possible. A strong school year begins with strong routines—and a good night’s sleep is an important part of helping every child learn, grow, and thrive! For more information and helpful sleep tips, visit HealthyChildren.org’s Healthy Sleep Habits resource.

Start of Year Testing

In the coming days, we will assess a variety of topics to provide students with the highest quality education possible. These assessments will include Acadience Reading Assessments (formerly DIBELS Reading), WIDA, Acadience Math, and curriculum-based assessments. Later in the fall, we will administer the CogAT (grades 3 & 5) and begin Interim RISE assessments. If you have any questions regarding these assessments, don't hesitate to get in touch with us.

Class Placement and Beginning of Year Assessments

Placing students in the right classroom environment is vital to meeting their individual needs. We are proud to be a leading school in South Davis County for student growth. A combination of classroom placement, robust support programs, and a strong intervention model underpins this success. We use a variety of assessments and careful thought and consideration in class placements each year. Still, we recognize that students grow and develop at different rates. One summer can also impact a student's growth. With that in mind, we reassess students at the start of each school year (and again in January) to ensure our program meets the needs of ALL students. While we often get placement right, we sometimes need to change a student’s classroom placement. We reevaluate placement in September and January. We are always happy to give additional information about class placement. If you have questions about your student’s class placement now or throughout the year, please contact Mrs. Pilkington.

Dress Code Reminders

This is a friendly reminder that the WPA dress code does not permit clothing with non-school logos, sweatpants, shoes that light up, shoes with wheels, Shoes with no heels (Crocs), or open toes. Tops must be Red, Navy, or White, and sweaters must be Red or Navy. (Tan or Khaki sweaters are not part of our dress code.)

Join Our Sub List

If you enjoy working with kids and are looking for flexible part-time work, consider joining WPA's substitute pool.

During the first week of school our 6th graders buddied up with our new kindergarten students to help them navigate the lunchroom for the first time.

From finding their way through the lunch line to making sure everyone knows where to sit and what to do, our 6th graders have shown what it means to be a leader, a friend, and a helping hand.
