Principal's Report
A Weekly Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School East
A Word From Dr. Clune
Dear PV East Parents and Guardians,
Our Bingo Night last week was a huge success. Many thanks to East H&S Association for sponsoring this event as well as to all the parents and teachers who volunteered to help. A great time was had by everyone. Next week is Safety Week. We will be practicing a different drill each day. These drills are HOLD, SECURE, SHELTER, and LOCKDOWN. The PA State Police and Perkiomen Township Fire Company will sometimes monitor these drills and provide feedback.
The warmer weather has started us to think about spring. There are many upcoming activities and events. This past week was 'Music in Our Schools' Spirit Week. East students showed their spirit for Music in Our Schools Month. It was a busy week with fun days like Country Music Day and pop-up Irish fiddle tunes to celebrate. The competition intensifies next week with the final 4 of the Music March Madness.
With spring coming we will soon be breaking ground on our new garden in the front of PV East. It will provide a wonderful pathway and sitting area through a butterfly garden. The entire garden was designed by master gardeners at Penn State Extension. If you are interested in having a personalized brick, please use this link: https://4everbricks.com/donors/PVMSE/
Other gardening events include our annual Watershed Clean-up, Green Team Plant Sale, and Loss Group's Flower Sale for Mother's Day.
We are excited to announce that we are hosting an eclipse viewing party and optional after party on Monday, April 8th starting at 2:15PM. We will be reviewing important safety precautions with students beforehand about viewing the eclipse. If you child wants to stay after school for the 'After Party' or if you want to volunteer to help, please use this link. www.tinyurl.com/EastEclipse
Sincerely,
Seamus Clune, Ph.D.

Proposed 24-25 Schedule Insights
A middle school schedule, see below, is being proposed for the 24/25 school year. This proposed schedule would provide purposeful time (I&E) for intervention and/or enrichment (Math and/or ELA), core rotations, and character education to occur within the school day. This week we will share more information about intervention with you. More information about core rotations and character education will be shared in future weeks.
Intervention strategies offer support to ALL students facing academic challenges by employing targeted, research-based instruction to close achievement gaps and build upon a students’ skills. Research indicates that I&E time can reduce the number of students referred to Special Education by providing students with the support they need early on in order to be successful. In this proposed schedule, students identified for intervention based on Math and/or ELA summative, diagnostic, and benchmark data do not attend their core class rotation at this time. Instead Special Education Teachers and Additional Support Staff (Reading Specialist, MTSS Facilitator, Title 1 Assistants, ELD Teacher) will provide Tier 2/3 Small Group (5-8 students) intervention for students. Students will be identified for intervention on a quarterly basis. If a student achieves their learning goals or targets they may not need to participate in a future Tier 2/Tier 3 intervention.
If students do not qualify to participate in a small group intervention they will participate in a Tier 1 core rotation. More information will be shared about the core rotations in next week's Principal's Report.

PV Public Library Visit
Emily Pope, Library Assistant at the Perkiomen Valley Public Library at Schwenksville, visited Digital Literacy classes today. Students learned how to apply for a public library card, how to use their library website and heard about the wonderful events and programs being offered. Some student favorites are the writing workshop by author Eric Bell this Saturday and the chess league.

Zero Waste Committee
A PV team that included our 7th Gr. Science Teachers; Greg Kirsinger & Kate Czapla; Director of Food Services, Kelsey Gartner; and Principal Seamus Clune, traveled to Delran Middle School in New Jersey to discuss food composting. Students here separate liquids, food waste, recyclables and trash in their cafeteria. They then use a commercial food composter to turn their food waste into rich compost that they are planning to sell. The result is an 85-90% reduction in waste. Wow!!! Many thanks to the CEO of EcoRich, Manish Desai and Principal Michael Hale for a very informative and inspiring visit.
Music In Our Schools
