Skills Are The New Workforce Currency In 2026
A College Degree is Great but without tangible real-world skills, it won't go far.
For many recent grads entering the workforce, a college degree is valuable, but it’s no longer the only currency that matters. In today’s job market, skills are the real currency, and employers increasingly want to see proof that you can learn, adapt, and apply knowledge in real-world situations. In Michigan, most jobs now require some type of education or training beyond high school.
In regions like Southeast Michigan, industries such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and IT are actively looking for workers who already have practical skills and a track record of learning new ones. Employers want candidates who can demonstrate they’ve been upskilling such as taking courses, earning credentials, creating their own projects, or gaining work experience. For example, digital literacy and AI skills are seeing a huge increase in demand.
For young adults starting their careers, the key is to think beyond the classroom. Internships, apprenticeships, online certifications, community college programs, and part-time work in high-demand industries can help build the critical skills employers are looking for.
The Case For Community College
Interested in saving money? Community College is FREE for in district students, and still a quarter of the cost of university in most cases.
Interested in a skilled trade? Community Colleges have numerous options in construction, manufacturing, healthcare and IT to name a few!
Interested in lower class sizes? Community Colleges are considerably smaller with better interactions with professors.

The Job Market Is Tough. But You Can Fight Back
The job market has become increasingly challenging for young adults entering the workforce in 2026. In fact, the unemployment rate for recent college graduates climbed to about 5.7% by the end of 2025, while underemployment reached 42.5%, meaning many young workers were either unemployed or working in jobs that didn’t require their degree. Additionally, labor reports show companies shedding roles.
So, WHAT can you do?
While there isn't a magic pill. Three important steps need to be made right now.
1) Get comfortable talking to everyone: The fastest way to your next job has always been and will always be through another person. Even the ones you think may not be able to help. Write down everyone you know and reach out to them about your goals. You never know how that simple act could pay off!
2) Build skills in AND out of the classroom: Employers want someone who can deliver and education or work history alone doesn't always cut it. Think about your own growth and build new skills in tech, AI, communication, or leadership.
3) Compose a great pitch: Whether written or verbally, you will need to tell others why you're awesome. Develop a great answer to the "tell me about yourself question" that serves as the foundation of your personal brand.
