Wheaton firefighters visited kindergarteners
This week, our kindergarteners had an exciting visit from the Wheaton firefighters! Students learned important lessons about fire safety, including what to do in case of an emergency. The highlight of the visit was getting a look at the fire engine and all the special equipment firefighters use to keep us safe.
FYI: There is no crossing guard at Briarcliffe Boulevard/22nd Street intersection
Wheaton Police recently informed our school that they are no longer providing a crossing guard at the intersection of Briarcliffe Boulevard and 22nd Street, north of Briar Glen. The City of Wheaton’s Engineering Department did a study of the intersection and determined that a crossing guard was no longer necessary at this four-way stop. The school is sharing this information so families are informed about your child’s route to school. If you have any questions, please contact the Wheaton police.
Register for the D89 Basketball League by October 22
Registration for the D89 Basketball League will close on Wednesday, October 22. The D89 Basketball League is an independent organization that plays games in CCSD 89 schools and includes many CCSD 89 students in third through sixth grades. There are boys’ and girls’ divisions for 3rd/4th grades and 5th/6th grades. No experience required. Teams practice weekly with games on Saturday.

All families should receive emergency test call on Friday, October 24
CCSD 89 will be conducting a test of the district's emergency phone contact system at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, October 24. Students will not be in school this day because of parent-teacher conferences. This test is designed to ensure that the district has accurate phone contacts for every student. On October 24, every guardian should receive a recorded voice message on the phone numbers registered with the district. If you do not receive a call by 3 p.m. Friday, October 24, you need to contact your school secretary to ensure the school has your correct information. More info: https://bit.ly/4o2v4hp
Please walk your bikes and e-bikes when on school grounds
Parents and students are reminded that no one should be riding bicycles, scooters, e-bikes, or skateboards on school grounds. Once you reach school property, riders should step off and walk their bicycle or scooter. This rule applies to both children and adults. There have been some near misses with bike riders zipping along a sidewalk filled with young students or cutting through traffic.
Walking bikes on school grounds keeps other students safe. It is also required under Board Policy 8:20, Community Use of School Facilities as well as in the Student/Parent Handbook that families acknowledge when registering.
As a reminder, the village of Glen Ellyn limits the use of electric scooters and electric bicycles for kids. No one under 18 can use an electric scooter, and you must be at least 16 years old to use an electric bike. More info: https://bit.ly/4kfuIlm
Thank you for helping keep our students safe!

Starting November 3, cafeteria hamburgers will contain soy
The food-services company that provides cafeteria meals at all five CCSD 89 schools will introduce a new hamburger product in November. The new burger contains soy, which was not present in the previous product. Quest Food Management Services said the nutrition standards remain the same, and the new burger meets all USDA Child Nutrition and NSLP requirements. More info: https://5il.co/3r6uo Additional questions about the burgers should be directed to Quest.
Halloween will be here before we know it!
Parties will be on Friday, October 31. Some children go home for lunch to get their costumes. Children who remain at school for lunch will bring their costumes to school in a bag and put them on after they eat lunch. Preschool Halloween parties will be on Thursday, October 30.
All children leaving the building for lunch will exit Door #1 by the office. Cars may not be left unattended on the west side of Briarcliffe Blvd. There will be many children exiting near the street during our noon and after-school dismissals. We urge you to drive cautiously.
For lunch, students should be picked up at 11:45 a.m. and return to school at 12:35 p.m. for the afternoon. Regular classes will be held from 12:35 to 2 p.m. At that time, students will prepare for the Halloween outdoor parade, which will begin at approximately 2:10 p.m. We will exit Door #3 and parade outside to Door #1. Parties will begin at 2:35 and end at 3:20 p.m. so teachers have time to prepare for a safe dismissal.
When considering costumes for school they must be non-violent. Costumes should not include swords, guns, knives, clubs, lasers, or any other type of weapon. All costumes and masks must be designed for safety and adequate vision. All costumes must be tasteful and age-appropriate.
If you are a room parent for the party, please remember to contact the teacher to discuss games. Room parents may bring party supplies to the classrooms at noon or after 2:15 p.m.
