The Pulse of the Pride - 5.15.2026

May 15, 2026
Lyme School Friends,
We have had another productive two weeks at our school. The middle school musical was tremendous and students clearly had fun putting on the show Alice in Wonderland Jr.! This week, we were working on completing our NH state testing in grades 3 through 8. Students were assessed in both ELA and math. 5th graders and 8th graders were also assessed in science.
Last Monday, we had a cool morning drop off with a hot air balloon flying by. Students were quite interested in this. We got this one shot before it landed.
Last Wednesday, the highlight of my day was when I was able to join a Lunch & Learn organized by Ms. Foxall and led by 7th graders. Maryam, Sol, Lincoln, and Alex presented the documentary project from ELA. Each one described a different aspect of the project, what they learned, and then showed their work. It was impressive how they demonstrated confidence, responded to questions, and exuded pride. If you are interested in attending a future Lunch & Learn, please reach out to Ms. Foxall efoxall@lymeschool.org.
Next week, our 8th graders are headed to Washington, DC and Gettysburg on their class trip. This will be a great opportunity to learn as well as celebrate their time at the Lyme School. It is hard to believe that these students will be finishing up their career here on June 18th. Please remember that I will be headed off with the 8th grade and Mr. Tomlinson, and Mrs. Foxall will be around if you need something.
Don't forget, we will have the May Pole on May 28th at 1:00 PM with a rain date of May 29th at 2:00 PM. This is always a fun tradition at our school.
Please remember that school is closed on May 28th. Have a wonderful long weekend! The next newsletter will hit your inbox on May 29th.
Thank you for your partnership and please reach out if you have questions.
Regards,
John P. D'Entremont, Principal

Health Office Update
Make Tick Checks a Habit to Keep You Safe
It’s Spring and time to review how to do a tick check. Check out this Tick Check Song to make tick checks more fun with your kids!
Ticks have now become more active and it’s important to take preventative measures to protect you and your family from tick borne diseases.
Before spending time outdoors in the woods or fields
Use a tick repellent with DEET or picaridin
Wear long sleeves and pants
Treat outdoor clothing and gear with Permethrin
Pets can bring ticks into your home, don’t forget to check dogs and cats
Although avoiding areas with high grass and old leaves and staying on maintained trails while hiking is helpful, ticks can be anywhere outdoors. Do a full body tick check every night and remove ticks immediately if found.
If your child has had a tick bite, contact your pediatrician to determine if criteria has been met to take the antibiotic Doxycycline to prevent Lyme Disease.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental Health Awareness Month: You Belong Here
Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 to highlight the vital role mental health plays in our lives. Often, people ask: "What exactly is mental health?"
When I speak with our younger students, I define it simply as:
Your ability to handle life’s ups and downs (big or small).
Being a good friend to YOURSELF.
Recognizing when things aren't working well and knowing how to ask for help.
Taking care of our minds is just as important as taking care of our bodies! Whether a student is navigating daily stress or managing a diagnosed mental health disorder, our goal at Lyme School is to create a welcoming space where families can talk openly and access the resources they need.
Breaking the Stigma
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 5 adults in America lives with a mental illness. Despite how common this is, a stigma still exists that can make people feel isolated. This month is our opportunity to come together, share our stories, and prove that no one is alone.
Our Work in "Stanton Time"
Throughout the year, we use our time together to explore feelings and emotions. We focus on:
Identification: Naming our feelings to express them healthily.
Self-Compassion: Practicing empathy not just for others, but for ourselves.
The Power of Change: Remembering that all feelings are okay, and all feelings change.
Research shows that this type of early intervention is a powerful tool in supporting youth mental health. Our school remains a healthy, happy place to learn because we consistently remind our students, staff, and parents: You are ENOUGH, you are VALUED, and you BELONG.
We Are Here To Help
We are so grateful to have your family as part of the Lyme School Community. If you ever have concerns about your child’s mental health, please reach out to any staff member. We are here to provide a listening ear, resources, and support.
With care,
Mrs. Stanton

LIBRARY & MEDIA NEWS
Last week, the fourth grade spent two days diving into an immersive research project about Lyme History. Each student was assigned a place or event to research. They looked at primary sources, visited the Lyme Historical Society, and used books from Converse Free Library. Several community members joined our group to support their work. After they researched, they wrote a paragraph and designed a flag representing their place/event. You can see their combined work here in an ebook and flags will be on display this summer on the Common at the 250th celebration!
The voting results are in! The 2026 Great Stone Face Book Award winner is… Faker by Gordon Korman. The 2026 Isinglass Teen Book Award winner is… Under the Surface by Diana Urban.

Archaeological Arachnids shined at the FIRST LEGO League World Championship
After months of hard work building and coding their robot, and consulting experts on their research project, nine Lyme middle school students had the honor of competing on a global stage. Last week, one of our two Lyme Lions Robotics teams took an incredible journey to the FIRST Lego League (FLL) World Championship in Houston, Texas. To put their achievement in perspective, this team was one of only 150 teams selected to compete in Houston, narrowed down from an original pool of over 35,000 teams worldwide.
While the team did not come home with a formal award this time, the experience of competing against the top 0.5% of robotics teams in the world was a victory in itself. Our students represented Lyme with sportsmanship, professionalism, and pride, gaining invaluable skills and making friends with peers from across the globe.
Simply reaching this level of competition is a monumental accomplishment for our small town, and we are so proud of everything they have achieved this season.
The team (aka the Archaeological Arachnids) are Madelyn, Lucia, Linnea, Alicia, Ansel, Alex, Oscar, Heath, and Atlas. Please join us in congratulating the team when you see them around school!
Go Lions!
In other Design Lab news... lower school kids have been busy too!
Kindergarten and 5th graders have been collaborating on designing and building the most amazing model tree houses. Kindergarten are taking them home this week.
First graders recently made flapping winged bird mobiles. They are trying to keep them from tangling up on the trip home this week.
Second has been building and coding Spike Essential robots.
Third has been wrapping up table top marble runs and have moved onto designing efficient popsicle stick catapults.
Fourth grade has been grappling with the engineering challenge of building a stable structure in a "tree", building their own model tree houses.
There's lots going on and it's always so much fun watching the creativity and resourcefulness of these kiddos while engaged in design challenges. :)

Our Maypole Celebration is fast approaching! As part of our tradition, if you have extra flowers in your garden to help fill our flower baskets for the event you will be able to drop those off at the school the day of! More info closer to the date.
Congratulations to the Alice and Wonderland Company!
We put on 3 amazing shows for the community last weekend. The Middle School worked incredibly hard to put on every aspect of this show. From props to set, backstage crew and tech, lobby crew, and of course the actors you saw on stage. Thank you to everyone who supported this event. To all parents and families who donated concessions, food for our cast party, and their time backstage, thank you immensely. Thank you for all your donations, they directly support the Drama Fund and allow us to keep performing for you!
Art News
May 2026 - Art News
Kindergarten students saw the amazing Alice in Wonderland production during their Art time last week and this week started a “color factory” project based on the book Color Blocked. We used shape stencils to build a wild network of pipes and funnels. Stay tuned for color explosion.
Grade 1 students finished up a project inspired by Artemis II’s lunar mission. We painted moons with black and white paint and opened up our low temp hot glue station to build exploratory robots with wood shapes.
Grade 2 students have been hearing about the Spider Weaver (a myth about the origins of Ghana’s kente cloth) and Anansi the Spider. Students warped circular looms and remembered their weaving patterns from 1st grade. They are tying knots and weaving colorful webs!
Grade 3 students learned about the BotJoy project and have been building cardboard robots with glue and fasteners to make moving parts. I love it when they discover the possibilities of creating gauges and dials! These robots have some creative powers.
Grade 4 students looked at how artists create space in landscapes and painted and drew beautifully detailed work inspired by Grant Wood and David Hockney.
Grade 5 students have been working on Dragon Eye paintings. This group has such careful craftsmanship! They created beautiful drawings, found color and value scales, and then went over their paintings to add value to their texture details.
The Middle School Play Elective wrapped up on Tuesday this week with some celebration and reflection. I am grateful for all the staff, families, admin, and students for contributing in all the ways that support these productions. It is an “all hands on deck” situation, and I am amazed at all the ways our community contributes to the success and celebration of these productions.
Artwork coming HOME
My apologies for not getting work home sooner! I am shifting my focus back to sorting and packing artwork to go home (this includes some art show work). I appreciate your patience with the process and hope to get artwork home safe ASAP.
Lower School Spanish
1st Grade Spanish: Soaring Through Central America!
Our 1st graders recently completed a vibrant, cross-curricular unit that brought their Language Arts bird studies to life in Spanish! The students didn't just learn new words; they became scientists. We studied five iconic species and the Central American countries they represent: the beautiful Quetzal (Guatemala), the loud Scarlet Macaw (Honduras), the large-beaked Toucan (Belize), the hovering Hummingbird (Costa Rica), and the unique Motmot (El Salvador).
Throughout the unit, we made deep science connections by discussing:
Structure & Function: Through our "Beak Lab," students experimented with how different beak shapes are tools for eating specific foods.
Survival & Camouflage: We observed how the Quetzal’s brilliant green feathers help it stay hidden in the leaves.
Life Cycles & Nests: Students used Spanish to sequence the journey from egg to adult and explored how different birds build unique nests to protect their young.
To wrap up the unit, we held a final "Bird Watching" expedition. Armed with handmade craft binoculars, students trekked through our "indoor jungle" to spot these species in the wild. It was amazing to hear them use their new vocabulary to describe the colors, movements, and habitats of the birds they "spotted." ¡Qué fantástico!
Middle School PE News
Brand New Health Elective Begins!!
Coming off a highly successful performance of Alice in Wonderland by our middle school students, this week began our final elective session. Holistic Health and Wellness is a new elective being offered and given the number of students who signed up, it appears that our students value taking good care of themselves by balancing physical and mental health and working toward strategies of achieving and maintaining a state of homeostasis.
A mix of activities are being offered, such as getting out in nature, walkabouts, creating health snacks, Yoga, and remembering to take moments of gratitude to remember the good things that surround us.
To start each session, students will write at least three things that they are grateful for, Each student has a gratitude journal to write in and will then take home at the end of the school year, Research has shown that having an "attitude of gratitude", helps with seratonin and dopamine levels in the brain, that allow for positive feelings and emotions to be carried within oneself which then boosts self esteem.
I know I am grateful that our students prioritize their health and that I get to share time with them that gives us all a chance to do our best to keep our hearts, minds, and bodies in a free flow of good things.

Join Us for the Last PTO Meeting of the Year!
Please join us for our final PTO meeting of the school year on Monday, May 18 at 7:30 PM. We’ll be planning the last few projects and events of the year, voting in new officers for the upcoming year, reflecting on all that the PTO has helped support, and looking ahead to what’s next.
The PTO is a wonderful way to stay connected, support our teachers and students, and help bring meaningful programs and events to life at Lyme School. We are also still looking for a Treasurer for next year, and would be so grateful for someone to step into this important role. You do not need prior PTO experience, just a willingness to help and be part of a great team.
We also want to give a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Gautreau for serving as Treasurer these past few years. We are so grateful for all of her time, care, and dedication in helping keep the PTO organized and running smoothly.
Whether you’re curious, interested in getting more involved, or just want to see what PTO is all about, we’d love to have you join us!
Please email pto@lymeschool.org if you have any questions or would like the Google Meet link and agenda.
