Families,

We are looking forward to seeing all of you next week for parent/teacher conferences. If youโ€™re able, leave some time to browse the Scholastic Book Fair while youโ€™re here. It will be set up in the school library. Your studentโ€™s progress report will be sent to you on Tuesday through Parent Square. Donโ€™t forget that weโ€™ll be operating on an early dismissal schedule on Wednesday, November 19th and Thursday, November 20th.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Cultural Performance

Thanks to the support of the EHEPTO and Memorial Schoolโ€™s Positive School Climate Committee, we enjoyed a fantastic cultural event Monday morning. Our students were treated to a performance called: Surcari โ€“ Music With A Latin Beat. A trio of musicians provided an interactive and educational show that highlighted music and traditional instruments from Spanish speaking countries around the world. Throughout the show, as each song was introduced, the leader of the group highlighted the country of origin on two large maps; and after being taught how to use each instrument, students were invited to perform along with the musicians. It was interactive, informative, and highly engaging!

A Visit From MacGyver

Everyone loves our visits with MacGyver! This week, he happily lounged on an oversized cushion while our learners spent time with him in the Cheetah Den.

PE

Hi everybody!

We are winding down our outdoor fall PE classes, ending just before Thanksgiving and getting ready for a long stretch of units and activities in the gym. We had a great fall of outdoor PE with nice weather and fun activities.

Here's a recap on the latest โ€œfall actionโ€ in our PE classes:

PreK, K, and Grade 1

- throwing and catching various weights and sizes of different balls and other things with different textures and shapes.

- stations, where we focused on fun and fitness based activities, eye- hand coordination, teamwork and partner cooperation, fine and gross motor development skills, like: ring toss, corn hole toss, short and long jump ropes, hula hooping, scarfs for beginning โ€œjugglingโ€, โ€œsnow cones/ice cream conesโ€, stacking cups, spinning plates, jumping sticks, skip its, "basket" and ping pong ball catching, velcro mitts and ball catching (working on our eye- hand coordination and skills), our version of paddleball/pickleball skills, using our heartrate monitors,

- frisbee and foxtail throwing and catching and some time using the disc golf baskets.

- cooperative games.

- fitness, balance, stretching, exercises, running, and "warmup activities" before our main activity or skill for that class.

- running club and mile run club on our outdoor running course (with our indoor running and mile clubs starting up now that we are inside).

- rock climbing wall and climbing clubs.

Math

Number Corner is an essential component of our math program, Bridges in Mathematics. It is a skill-building program that revolves around the classroom calendar, providing daily practice as well as continual encounters with broader mathematical concepts. Number Corner is 15-20 minutes of engaging instruction. The program features short daily workouts that introduce, reinforce, and extend skills and concepts related to critical areas of study at each grade level. These workouts include: calendar grid, calendar collector, computational fluency, number line, days in school (K/1), daily rectangle (2) and solving problems (3). Throughout the month during our Number Corner block, students have the opportunity to play games or activities, use manipulatives and are introduced to math vocabulary.

Each month of Number Corner, there is a new pattern introduced in the calendar. We have included an image of your childโ€™s Number Corner calendar from last month. Have a discussion with your child about the patterns that were incorporated during the month of October, along with the other components of Number Corner.

On The Math Learning Center website, you can explore as a parent to find out what key skills and concepts are practiced during Number Corner throughout the year through the concept outline. When checking out the website, be sure to click on the appropriate grade level on the left hand side of the screen.
