RWHS marks 3 decades of educating our youth
Red Wing High School held its first commencement ceremony 30 years ago with the class of 1996. Courtesy of a voter-approved building referendum, RWHS replaced the former Central High School starting with the 1995-1996 school year.
Creating spaces and classrooms that could change as students' educational needs changed was among the goals. Technology topped that list. In the early 1990s, the internet was for university students, military personnel, and computer scientists. The world wide web -- as it was known at the time -- was emerging quickly as RWHS construction got underway.
By the time future 2026 classmates were born in 2007 and 2008, the internet handled about 97% of all two-way telecommunications. They will graduate this Friday as Red Wing Public Schools completes the first year of a five-year transformation process to prepare students for a world shaped by artificial intelligence, computing, and data science so they can navigate life with curiosity, integrity, and purpose.

Colvill Family Center -- birth to pre-K
Ding, ding. It's trolley time
Colvill's Early Childhood Family Education families had a great time on the Red Wing Trolley. They rode through town, enjoyed a book and then spent time at a local park as part of their adventure.
We're not so little anymore
Little Wingers marked the end of their time at Colvill Family Center with a cap and gown ceremony. We'll see the younger children this fall!

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe ...
She had so many children, she didn't know what to do. Well, the Mississippi Flyway has so many birds, but STEAM students know what to do. They have repurposed old boots into birdhouses. Mounted and turned so toe faces down, the boots provide cavities for nesting.

Feather Ceremony
Honoring their accomplishments
Marquis Blackson, Lloyd Boyd, Nina Davis, Lisa DeCoteau, Darlyn Fiddler, Jose Goytia, Nevaeh Green, Amarianna Iverson-Crockett, Xavier Kienholz, Jesse Moeser, Neenah Schaffer, Savannah Stately, Trayce Taylor, Shanaya Wells, Baron White and Willow Willgrubs were honored Friday, May, 29, during the American Indian Graduate Feather Ceremony. Terry Fiddler (right) provided guidance as family members pinned a medicine wheel and eagle feather on their student. Elders give eagle feathers in times of great achievement. The students demonstrated strength, courage and perseverance to graduate from high school. "Wherever you are at in your life and when things get tough, you grab this feather, sit down -- or go on top of a hill -- and pray," Fiddler said. "And things are always going to be in a better place, a better day."

Burawa completes AI Bootcamp for educators
Red Wing High School English language arts teacher Christopher Burawa recently completed the Mark Cuban Foundation AI Teacher Bootcamp, a rigorous 10-month professional development program where secondary educators log 20 hours of artificial intelligence learning.
"At first the bootcamp was intense, occasionally overwhelming, but all the while supported by a great teaching staff. There would be a presentation on the Google Classroom by the lead teacher and then we would be assigned, randomly, to a breakout room to discuss the prompt for that month. It was so interesting to engage with teachers from all over the country, all of whom had varying degrees of experience with AI. There was always a deliverable after each meeting, due by the next meetup date," he said.
The Bootcamp isn't a quick overview, the foundation notes: Teachers who complete it walk away with hands-on experience using AI tools in ways that expand what's possible for their students, not just streamline their own workflows.
"What was interesting to me was how we all arrived at an understanding that all AI work required human oversight — from the prompt to the reflection on the output — as part of the critical thinking loop. I am very grateful to the Mark Cuban Foundation for sponsoring this national effort toward educating the educators about AI," Burawa said.
Next up: AI camp for students this fall
Red Wing High School students who will be 13 or older by Oct. 31 will have an opportunity to attend the Mark Cuban Foundation AI Camp, coming to Red Wing for the first time. The camp is made possible through the generous support of Red Wing High School alum Dwight Diercks and his wife, Dian, in partnership with Ignite and the Jones Family Foundation.
Who: Must be 13 at the time of the camp dates to participate
Student applications open: Aug. 1
