Preparing students for a changing world Preparing students for a changing world

See Flight Path 2030 in 60 seconds!

Flight Path 2030 is Red Wing Public Schools’ five-year readiness initiative designed to help students build the skills, habits and experiences they will need for a changing world.

Artificial intelligence is one part of that work. Computing, data literacy, responsible technology use and real-world problem-solving are part of it, too. The goal is to give students more opportunities to explore, build useful skills and connect what they learn in school to what comes next.

Building the learning pathway

Students in grades 7-12 have new opportunities this year to explore digital literacy, computing, data and responsible AI — from a new foundational grade 7 course through Exploring Data, Computing & AI and AP Computer Science Principles. Additional courses are already being planned for future years.

New AICE Specialist Dr. Jonathan Trevathan is helping connect these experiences into a broader pathway that can lead to advanced coursework, internships, postsecondary opportunities and careers. RWPS is also continuing to build staff knowledge and support so this work moves thoughtfully from plan to classroom practice.

Learning beyond the classroom Learning beyond the classroom

This summer, nine Red Wing students participated in STEM programs at the Milwaukee School of Engineering through Flight Path 2030 scholarships — learning on a college campus while exploring interests in STEM and possible paths after high school.

This fall brings another new opportunity: the Mark Cuban Foundation AI Bootcamp. High school students will spend three Saturdays learning how AI works, where it is used and how to apply it responsibly through hands-on experiences. No previous AI or coding experience is required.

Sometimes the first step is simply trying Sometimes the first step is simply trying

RWHS student Bea Lahammer almost passed up an opportunity to participate in Aspirations in Computing. Instead, the experience helped her build confidence, make connections and better understand the possibilities available after high school.

Her experience reflects an important idea behind Flight Path 2030:

Students do not need to know exactly where they are headed. They need opportunities to explore before they have to decide.

Flight Path 2030 is creating more of those opportunities.

The opportunity she almost missed
