Bayhawks build Custom Smart Hydroponics System
Mr. Patterson and the APPLied club are actively making strides to create the first Hydroponics system at CHS! Student intern, Andres, and Mr. Patterson recently met with Mr. Christopher Hack, our Area Supervisor for Food and Nutrition, and he has officially approved the use of both the Tower Garden systems and our custom “smart” hydroponics build to support CHS students as well as the wider community by growing produce. This project is collaborating technology with science and incorporating community partners like The National Aquarium Conservation team! We wait to see where it GROWS!
Local Muralist Naomi O'Connell visits CHS
Local artist, Naomi O'Connell, @studio_omio on instagram, came to CHS on Feb 11th to share her journey with our intermediate art & mixed media students. Naomi, has had a huge part in the beautification of numerous areas in Essex and Towson and is collaborating with our Art Department to empower students to leave their mark on our school building. After her presentation, students worked in groups to create their own work of art using a quote and an inspiration piece. We are excited to have Naomi be a guiding voice in helping our students create and install some art pieces and murals and bring a bit of real world into the classroom.

Shout out to our Community Partner : Potomac Pizza
This month we want to celebrate one of our community partner's, Potomac Pizza Middle River, for supporting our Bayhawks in more way than one! First, on February 11th, they came out after school and did a Pizza Making Class with our Cooking club! Not only did each student leave with their own ready to cook pizza but they each got a $15 gc and some delicious pizza to snack on. Then, on February 18th they donated pizzas to celebrate the achievements of our AVID 12 class for their work on the American Heart Challenge Campaign raising over $1400 for the American Heart Association. We are so grateful for partners that make these opportunities possible for our students.

Parents - Please complete the BCPS Climate Survey!
Over the past couple years, CHS has really focused on increasing communication with families, providing opportunities for students to be engaged during the school day and after school as well as making sure we have an activity bus for them to get home safely. We have also increased visibility of students in our building and classrooms and are working hard to make each student feel seen and know that they are a part of the CHS Community.
Please fill out the annual BCPS Climate Survey is available now through Friday, March 6. The survey focuses on school climate and engagement and is for all stakeholders: students in Grades 3-12, parents/guardians, community members, and all staff. It takes three minutes or less to complete and is anonymous. Last year, we only had a small sample of parents respond and we would love to increase that this year. Thank you in advance for your support.

Ingredients
- ▢2 large chicken breasts
- ▢1 tablespoon olive oil
- ▢1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- ▢1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- ▢Kosher salt and ground pepper, to taste
- ▢1 cup buffalo sauce, low sugar
- ▢1 cup crumbled blue cheese
- ▢4 large whole wheat tortillas
- ▢Romaine lettuce leaves, as needed
- ▢2 large carrots, shredded
- ▢2 celery sticks, thinly sliced
Instructions
Rub the 2 large chicken breasts with 1 tablespoon olive oil and seasonings. (1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, and Kosher salt and ground pepper). Preheat a grill pan or an outdoor grill over medium-high heat. Grill the chicken for 7-9 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
Allow the grilled chicken to cool, then chop it. In a mixing bowl, combine the grilled chopped chicken with 1 cup buffalo sauce and 1 cup crumbled blue cheese.
Lay one tortilla of the 4 large whole wheat tortillas, on a clean chopping board and layer 2 Romaine lettuce leaves on top.
Add a few spoonfuls of buffalo-chicken mixture.
Top with 2 large carrots (shredded) and 2 celery sticks (sliced). Roll tightly and cut in half to serve. Repeat with the remaining tortillas and filling ingredients.
Notes
- Serving size is one whole tortilla wrap or two halves.
- Use any tortilla wrap of your choice. So many great and healthy options to choose from.
- Find some healthier buffalo sauces that are low in sugar. Or make your own at home, and it’s easy too. To learn how to make some at home, check out my How to make homemade buffalo sauce.
- Instead of romaine lettuce, you can use shredded cabbage or some other greens like spinach.
- If you do not like blue cheese, use crumbled feta cheese or even crumbled goat cheese

CHS Regular Bell Schedule
Attendance/Lateness/Early Dismissal Guidelines
Attendance: Regular school attendance has a direct impact on a student’s academic success. It is the key to high school graduation and college and career readiness. Research has proven that students who regularly attend school and are on time are more likely to read on grade level, less likely to drop out of school, and more likely to attend all classes that have been assigned to them. Our goal as a school this year is to have 93% attendance or higher!
If a student must be absent from school, the student must present an absence note to the Main Office within 3 days after returning to school. The note must include the student's name, grade level, date of absence, the reason for the absence and must be signed by a parent or guardian. If a student is absent for more than three consecutive days, a doctor/physician's note must also be presented. Notes can be directly uploaded into Focus by using the steps outlined in the Parent Guide below.
Early Dismissal: Requests for early dismissal should be brought to the Main Office before 7:45 AM. The notes must be signed by a parent/guardian with the time and date to be excused, a parent contact number, and the reason for the early dismissal. Unplanned early dismissals must be arranged by the nurse or the Main Office. Students must sign out in the Main Office before leaving school property. Anyone who signs the student out must have a valid ID and be on our list of those who have approval to pick up the student. Therefore, we must have correct contact information on file yearly.
Lateness: To maximize instructional time, it is important that students arrive on time to school. For a student to be counted as present for a full day, the student must be in attendance four hours or more of the school day. All students who arrive after 7:45 AM must sign in at the late check-in kiosk in the main lobby to pick up a late pass before being admitted to class. A signed note from a guardian explaining the reason for the lateness is required at the time of arrival in order for the lateness to be excused. More information on the Lateness procedure below.
Lateness Procedures
All students are expected to be in their classrooms by 7:45am. All late students, arriving to school or class after 7:45 AM, are expected to scan in at the Attendance Kiosk. The Attendance Kiosk is in the main entrance vestibule and will be operated by one of our secretaries. Students must have access to their BCPS Student ID barcode to scan in at the kiosk. Stay Connected with your child's teachers with Talking Points!
BCPS has purchased a new tool to help connect families and teachers more directly. Teachers can text the primary contact in focus and it will translate to the contact's native language, automatically. We hope this will help increase two way communication with all families and improve student achievement.

Have an issue with your BCPS device?

For any technical issues with student devices, please use our Technology Consult Form:
Submitting this form ensures the issue is properly tracked and addressed. Without a submitted request, we are not aware there's a problem. This process allows us to prioritize and resolve issues more efficiently.
