Hello Cougar Fams!

Apple Awards - Honor our Staff

I'm making one last request for your help with Apple Award nominations! This is our chance to shine a light on the incredible staff members who make our school so special.

Whether it's a teacher who sparked a love of reading, a counselor who offered a listening ear, or a staff member who greets you with a smile every morning, these nominations mean the world.

If you wouldn’t mind taking a tiny bit of time to make a nomination, I would be so thankful! Thanks for helping us show our staff some love!

NOMINATION LINK - click on the green Nominate buttons and choose Copper Mesa. So easy!

    BATTLE OF THE BOOKS -

Does your child love to read and remember details from books? Does your child work well in small groups? Is your child up for the challenge of answering quiz type questions about books?

    If so…

Come join the Copper Mesa Elementary Battle of the Books Club!! Battle of the books is a voluntary reading competition for students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Students who choose to participate will read from a list of 10 books, and will compete by answering questions testing their knowledge of the books read. We will compete as a team against teams from other elementary schools.

Club meetings are most Thursdays after school, beginning October 22 from 3:30 - 4:15pm. in Mrs. Hollist’s Classroom. The cost is $40 and will include participation in all team meetings, 4 battles, a T-shirt, and an end of season party.

Battles will be held at the Lone Tree Library on a weeknight evening, once a week (Tuesday or Thursday) starting the week of January 25th. The official schedule will be posted around Thanksgiving break.

Each child who wants to battle will have to commit to reading 8 of the 10 books on the list. We will talk more about ‘expert books’ as we continue.

    COGAT TESTING -

DCSD is committed to implementing equitable practices to increase access to advanced/gifted learning opportunities. Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, we implement Universal Screening for students in 2nd grade (February) and 5th grade (November).

As part of this process, ALL students in 5th grade who have not been identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of November 2nd. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.

Please see the following for additional information linked below:

DCSD Universal Screening Letter to Families_Fall

Please reach out to Heather Stinnett (CME GT Facilitator) with any questions.
