Dr. Hawthorne's Highlights
From Dr. Hawthorne:
All Florida students take a state required progress monitoring test three times a year. For short, our district calls these assessments PM1 (Progress Monitoring 1), PM2, and PM3, or FAST, Florida Assessment of Student Thinking. All VRB students took FAST in both reading and math during the first three weeks of school. Students will take the tests again in December and in April/May. These tests focus on the current grade level students are in. For example, if your child is in third grade, PM1 in August measures what they already know about third grade standards. Many times we might see a student score low at a Level 1, but after weeks and months of teaching, these scores quickly go up in December and April/May. The tests are graded Level 1 to Level 5. Level 3 is passing, and Level 4 is considered mastery of grade level standards.
The two websites below provide great resources for parents about our FAST assessments. The first site is a list of resources, including a fact sheet and also information about computer adaptive testing, which FAST is. The second site provides released tests so parents and teachers can see what the actual tests look and feel like. Please take advantage of these great resources, and follow up with your child's teacher(s) if you have any additional questions!
