A Message from Mr. Koenig
Thank You McKinley Community for an Incredible Booster Fundraiser! 🎉
The McKinley PTO and the entire McKinley community want to offer our heartfelt gratitude for your incredible generosity during our Fall Booster Fundraiser!
We set an ambitious goal of $40,000, and the McKinley community truly went above and beyond, raising over $53,000! This success is a direct result of your dedication to our students, and we couldn't be more thankful.
These generous donations will have a huge impact on all of our Bulldogs this year. Your support will:
Cover the PTO's annual operating expenses.
Help pay for field trips for all our Bulldogs.
Fund enhancements to our playground and recess experiences.
Provide a financial contribution toward upgrading our aging marquee sign in front of the school.
To celebrate meeting and exceeding our goal, students participated in the Booster Obstacle Course! The top earners in the school had the opportunity to paint staff members at a final assembly—a true highlight!

Parent Teacher Conferences
Our teaching staff look forward to connecting with all of our McKinley families during Parent-Teacher Conferences, scheduled for:
Monday, October 6th - 12:40 - 8:20PM
Thursday, October 9th - 4:10 - 8:20PM
These early-year conferences are a great opportunity for parents and guardians to connect with teachers to check in on your student's progress and establish goals for the academic year. Teachers will be sharing baseline data from early assessments and discussing plans for the year ahead.
Our goal is to connect with every family this fall!
Thank you to everyone who has already signed up! If you haven't yet secured your time slot, please log in to MyConference Time to schedule your appointment as soon as possible.
If the scheduled conference nights present a conflict for your family, please reach out directly to your child's teacher to find an alternate time to meet. Your partnership is invaluable, and we want to ensure we connect with you to support your child's academic, social, and emotional growth this year.
Thank you for your partnership in your child's education!
A Message from Mrs. Ness-Manary
What a great start to the school year this has been! Our Bulldogs learned all about Respect throughout September and this month we are focusing on Responsibility. The definition we use for responsibility is taking action and understanding the impact of our choices. Students will have many opportunities to display responsibility throughout the month at school and within their community. Review Responsibility as a family! Choose one household chore (or more!) that requires multiple steps, then have each member of the family select one step to complete to help get the job done!
On Wednesday, October 22, McKinley will celebrate Unity Day! Unity Day, started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center in October 2011, is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month. This is a day when we can come together to send a visible message of building commUNITY through kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. The call to action is simple: wear and share the color orange. This vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, showing support for students who have been bullied and for bullying prevention.
Our fourth graders will be participating in our annual Kindness Retreat on Wednesday, October 22. We partner with Oak Haven Church, Blaine High School students, Scooters Coffee and Mansetti's Pizza to allow the fourth graders the opportunity to experience a day of nothing but kindness. The retreat is led by our friends at Youth Frontiers and is such a fun day.
Did you know that McKinley participates in the Every Meal program? This program helps to fill the gap in food availability on the weekends. This is a free program and there are no qualification guidelines! If you would like to learn more about Every Meal, click here. To sign up, please email me at: jessica.nessmanary@ahschools.us.
Soon the cooler weather will be upon us and we will start thinking about the winter holidays! If your family may need some help this winter with food over the Thanksgiving holidays or gifts near the December holidays, please reach out to let me know. If your family is interested in helping another McKinley family confidentially, please reach out to me as well!

The Artful Bulldogs
The McKinley Art Room is filled with the most wonderful and creative artists. We are excited for
all the beautiful art we will amaze you with this year!
Mrs.Thomsen
Kindergarten
Our kindergarten artists are learning all about the element of art, line. A line is a dot that goes on a walk. Our artists are working on drawing and cutting all different types of lines. We are starting our first project, line popsicles, where we will focus on cutting, using watercolor paint, Kwik Stix, and crayons. They always turn out deliciously wonderful!
First Grade
First grade artists are focusing on lines and shapes this trimester. We are learning the difference between geometric and organic shapes. Our artists are working hard on creating organic-shaped fall leaves using watercolor paint and crayons. They are vibrant and full of beautiful craftsmanship.
Second Grade
This trimester, our second grade artists are learning all about texture. They are learning the difference between real texture (something you can feel) and implied texture (something you can see). Our artists are creating the most fabulous sea turtles using both types of texture. Hoping you will love these adorable sea creatures.
Third Grade
Third grade artists are mastering all of the elements of art. Our first project is to incorporate all the elements into a large sandwich. We are learning about the genre of art known as Pop Art, along with introducing many famous artists who practice this type of art. Their sandwiches will leave you craving more art!
Fourth Grade
Our focus this trimester in fourth grade is to learn how art communicates. Students learn how to read and create art that can speak a narrative without using words. We started our personal pocket project that gives information about the artist, using drawings to depict things they love. Ask your artist what’s in their individual pockets.
Fifth Grade
During the span of this year, students will be exploring how artists see and create art differently by examining work in four (or more) art styles. We started with non-objective art and learned about graffiti, street art, and artists who make this type of artwork. They are using their names to create different types of lettering and details to make a mini graffiti wall. Our artists are incorporating the elements of art and using their artistic skills to represent themselves.
Explorations News - Mrs. Marano
October News
Kindergarten:
In Explorations, we are in a unit called “My Big Nature Adventure!” Students are currently focused on how they can be scientists–using their eyes, ears and touch to investigate things, and using their mouths to share their ideas. We are also learning about the needs of plants. In October, we will transition from plants to animals. We will discuss common things that all animals need and how animals get what they need from the environment they live in. What is your child’s favorite animal? Ask them what that animal needs to live. Students would be excited to search out information with you about what their favorite animal loves to eat!
First Grade
First graders are in a unit called “The Museum of Leafology.” They have been learning about what each part of a plant does for the entire plant, and they will be bringing home a “model plant” soon. Ask them to show you their “museum piece” and tell you what each part of the plant does! Next, we will be talking about how plants disperse, or spread, their seeds. We will be making some “model seeds” to disperse in the wind! I am encouraging my students to demonstrate their “flying seeds” for their families, and tell why plants need to spread their seeds far away from the parent plants.
Second Grade:
Second graders are in a unit called “Master of Materials!” They have been testing the properties of different materials and ranking them accordingly. We did a hardness test, and a very popular absorbency test! In October, we will be using two different materials to build towers, and we will test the strength and stability of our creations!
Students will be challenged to build a tower that can stand up to the wind of a fan, and hold the weight of our science books! Ask your student what they are learning about building a strong structure.
Third Grade:
Third grade students have been in a short unit called “The Pet Problem.” They were challenged to make a waterproof model umbrella for a “challenge animal.” I was very proud of their teamwork! Ask you student how their umbrella test went, and what they learned.
In October, we will begin our longer unit, “The Ultimate Playground,” a unit on forces and motion. We will investigate how the direction of a force affects the direction an object moves. We will also investigate questions such as, what happens when you use a lot of force on an object? Or just a little? What forces are involved in an object just standing still? Ask your child what types of forces are involved in activities they enjoy!
