WEEKLY NEWSLETTER OF O. HENRY MIDDLE SCHOOL
Principal's Update - Summer Edition - Week of August 7
Dear Mustang Families,
While the first day of school isn’t until August 18, our halls were already alive with the sounds of students and staff this week. More than 160 new Mustangs joined us for two days of Mustang Transition Camp, where they explored the campus, learned O. Henry traditions, made new friends, and got a head start on feeling at home at O. Henry. A huge thank you to our staff, NJHS students, and parent volunteers who helped make Mustang Camp such a wonderful experience for our newest students.
Our Mustang Band was also back in action this week. Please join me in recognizing Mr. Pinkney, our Band Director, who welcomed students from multiple grade levels and ensembles to campus to build their skills and prepare for the year ahead. We are proud of both our new and returning musicians for the work they have already put in before their fall performances even begin.
We loved being able to connect with so many families at Parent 101 on Tuesday evening. Thank you to everyone who joined us to learn more about middle school and how we can work together to help students have a successful year. If you were unable to attend, or would simply like to review what we covered, you can find the Parent 101 presentation notes here: Parent 101 Presentation Notes
You may have also noticed a new addition to O. Henry along Exposition Boulevard this week. A huge thank you to Tarrytown Pharmacy and the Newberry family for sponsoring our new marquee. We are incredibly grateful for their generosity and continued investment in our school.
In this week’s Pony Express, you’ll find important back-to-school information to help your family prepare for a successful start to the year, including:
Upcoming Events – Derby Day and Back-to-School Night
Classroom Supply Lists – Grade-level and elective supply lists
Daily Bell Schedule – School day schedule and lunch periods
Athletics – Physical requirements and tryout information
Orchestra Information – Opportunities and information for Mustang musicians
PTA News – Ways to get involved and support our school
Community News – Local events and resources for families
As we get closer to the first day of school, please remember that Austin ISD registration must be completed before students can receive their class schedules for the 2026–2027 school year. If you have not yet completed registration, please do so as soon as possible. Our staff will continue reaching out by email and phone to families with incomplete registrations to help ensure every Mustang is ready for August 18.
Finally, I hope to see everyone at Derby Day next Friday, August 14, from 2:00–4:00 PM. Students will have an opportunity to pick up their schedules, find their classrooms, reconnect with friends, and get ready for the start of another great year at O. Henry.
We are getting close, Mustangs. I can’t wait to welcome everyone back and officially kick off the 2026–2027 school year.
Giddy Up!

O. Henry Mustang Club
The Mustang Club supports all athletics at O. Henry Middle School by providing funds for coach stipends, new equipment, and equipment maintenance, as well as promoting school spirit and organizing volunteers. AISD does not provide funding for all of O. Henry’s athletic needs, and we appreciate the support of parents and the community to help fund the financial gap and maintain our high level of athletic offerings to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.
