The fourth graders won 3rd place at Masters
Bravo to our Math is Cool fourth graders who won 3rd place at Masters in Moses lake on May 17th. Henry Hughes got 2nd place for individual and Eowyn Wright got 8th for individual. This was a huge success! We normally don't win at Masters...but do well at regionals. Ellen Horton was their main high school coach, but many high school math team kids helped coach.

Happy Retirement Maureen "Sis" Childs!
As Sis’s retirement grew near over these past handful of weeks, I’ve been thinking about how to put the essence of Sis and what she means to everyone into words–and then I started thinking about the AMC Gremlin she used to drive. If you don’t know what a Gremlin is, do yourself a favor and look it up later…they’re really something. Just like Sis, these cars are fun and quirky and just like Sis, the Gremlin made no attempt to be like anything else because it didn’t need to be! There is no car like a Gremlin, and there is nobody like Sis!
Even if you’re not necessarily a car person, we’ve certainly all had vehicles that we form a connection with–vehicles that make us feel happy and safe and that are reliable. A vehicle that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Sis, that feeling is the best way I can describe how you make us all feel. Like a car that possesses that X factor, there is an energy about you that makes everything feel like it’s going to be ok. You are one of the most fun people I know and you make everyone feel important and loved. The hundreds of students you’ve taught and every single one of us has a brighter life because of you.
And just like the AMC Gremlin, there will never be a true replacement for the unique, fun, amazing human that is you. We love you, Sis!

Protecting the Foundation and Future of Interscholastic Athletics: Why Middle School Athletics Matter
As the Athletic Director of a small, close-knit school district here in Oregon, I have seen firsthand the impact that middle school sports have on our school, community, and high school programs. Often overshadowed by the attention of high school sports, these programs form a vital foundation, teaching not just athletic skills and fundamentals, but also fostering the priceless character qualities that will serve our students in all stages of their lives. Protecting and investing in middle school athletics isn’t just about sports; it’s about investing in the future of our students, schools, and community.
One of the most tangible benefits we see is the correlation between participation in sports and improved attendance. Students involved in interscholastic sports or activities have a greater incentive to be present at school. They don’t want to miss practice, disappoint their coach and teammates, or fall behind on their commitments. For some, it is what gets them through the door. National data consistently supports this observation. The structure, the camaraderie, and the sense of belonging fostered by team participation create a stronger connection to the school environment itself.
Participation in interscholastic athletics and activities has also been proven to have a positive correlation with academic performance. The discipline, time management skills, and goal-setting often required in extra-curricular activities often transfer to the classroom. Student-athletes learn to balance their academic responsibilities with their athletic commitments, fostering a sense of responsibility and organization. Numerous national studies indicate a positive association between sports participation and academic outcomes such as higher GPAs and graduation rates.
Beyond the immediate benefits, middle school athletics plays a crucial role in valuable vertical alignment with our high school programs. Middle school athletics provide a vital training ground, introducing students to fundamental skills, teamwork concepts, and the competitive spirit in a less intense environment. This early exposure allows students to develop a passion for a sport, learn the basic strategies and techniques, and build a foundation that makes the transition to high school athletics smoother and more successful. Without strong middle school programs, high school programs face the challenge of teaching fundamental skills to students with varying levels of experience, potentially hindering their progress and the overall competitiveness of our high school athletic programs. Middle school sports help build a pipeline of confident and skilled student-athletes while striving for a consistent and high-quality athletic experience for our students..
Perhaps most importantly, middle school sports significantly contribute to the mental health and well-being of our students. In these formative years, our students navigate significant social, emotional, and physical changes. Being part of a team and engaging in what I like to call the “athletic classroom” provides a sense of belonging, fosters positive peer relationships, and offers a healthy outlet for stress and energy. The lessons learned in sports – teamwork, resilience, dealing with both wins and losses, and the importance of perseverance – are invaluable life skills that contribute to their emotional and social development.
Nationally, organizations like the Aspen Institute's Project Play highlight the positive impact of youth sports on mental health, citing reduced rates of anxiety and depression among active youth. The consensus among educators and child development experts underscores the crucial role of physical activity and team involvement in promoting positive mental health outcomes for adolescents. The social support system provided by a team, the physical exertion that releases endorphins, and the sense of accomplishment after achieving a goal all contribute to a healthier and more resilient mindset.
Protecting middle school interscholastic athletics is not a peripheral issue; it's central to the holistic development of our students. From fostering better attendance and potentially influencing academic performance to providing crucial vertical alignment with high school programs and nurturing positive mental health, the benefits are undeniable. I urge our communities, policymakers, and stakeholders to recognize the profound importance of these programs and to ensure they remain a vibrant and accessible part of the middle school experience for all students. Investing in middle school sports is an investment in the future success and well-being of our young people.

Cinco de Pie-o
At the beginning of May at CAPS we had our first annual Cinco de Pie-o! (Because you better believe we’ll be bringing this event back again year-after-year!) Four intrepid educators volunteered themselves up on the block: Mr. Neighbors, Mr. McIntire, Ms. Brounstein, and Dr. Fialkiewicz. But in the end, only the educator who garnered the most donations would receive the pie in the face. And that honor went to Dr.F!
After raising a combined total of over $480, the staff took the stage, where Zeke Gomez (the winner of the pie-throw raffle) did the honors. Staff are already in discussions for who will be up for pie-ing next year!
