How should we set students up for success? How should we set students up for success?

Right now, fewer than half of Red Wing’s kindergarten students are considered fully ready when they start school.

When we talk about children being “ready” for kindergarten, we’re not talking about being perfect or ahead academically. Readiness is about whether children have the basic skills and supports that help them feel confident and ready to learn in a classroom.

Red Wing Public Schools will survey the community Feb. 1-23 as part of a listening-and-learning effort. Your input matters as we work together to support our youngest learners.

WAYS TO TAKE THE SURVEY

1. Scan the QR code with your smartphone.

2. Visit the survey website link: bit.ly/rw-ready-survey

3. Visit one of our school buildings.

4. Call the District Office at 651-385-4500 to request a paper copy

Red Wing High School registration is underway and students have several newly approved courses in computing, data, and artificial intelligence as part of Flight Path 2030. Beginning in 2026-27, students will have opportunities to explore how technology and data shape everyday life — skills that matter across careers, trades, college pathways, public service and civic life.

These courses are designed for all students, focusing on critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and understanding how information is created and used. With course registration right around the corner, students and families are encouraged to review these new offerings and consider how they can support each student’s interests, goals, and future plans.

Something wicked this way comes!

Students in Molly Kiefer's sophomore Honors Language Arts classes explore would-be props for Shakespeare's "Scottish Play," also known outside of the theater as Macbeth. This fall, they had the opportunity to study Twelfth Night when the Globe's Lord Chamberlain's Men came to the Sheldon Theater, thanks to a grant from Red Wing Public Schools Foundation. The RWPSF was established in 1995 to enhance the experience of Red Wing students and continues to do so because of generous donor support. To donate, please go to RedWingSchools.org/how-to-donate.

Students seek to enrich sea lions' lives Students seek to enrich sea lions' lives

Each year the Minnesota Zoo chooses an animal whose enclosure is in need of updating. This is a STEM design challenge for K-12 students, tasking them with solving real-world zookeeper problems, such as designing animal enrichments to improve their enclosure and quality of life.

This year, the Minnesota Zoo chose the California Sea Lions as the main focus of the project. Burnside fourth graders conducted research about the sea lions' likes, dislikes, ways of life and more to decide what type of enrichment would be most beneficial for them.

Six student shared their designs at the Tuesday, Jan. 27, Red Wing School Board meeting. The projects ranged from a private ship to kelp grass.
