Hanover Street School Newsletter
May 13th, 2024
It feels like we are running headlong into the end of the year. There are so many upcoming field trips and end of year events, that I've added them in the news section below.
Our state mandated testing is over. I'm pleased to report that our math scores are higher than last year. We will not get the Reading/Writing test results until mid June.
It was nice to see so many families at our two events last week, Western Night last Friday and the Walk and Bike to School event.

Construction Updates
We have started to use the new cafeteria. The kindergarten students had a picnic style morning snack (The cafe tables will not arrive for another few weeks). We also held our first day of kindergarten screenings in the cafeteria and will do that again on the 17th. The new classrooms are also available for use now.
The renovation of the nurse's office and rooms 105, 106, and107 needs to start in a few days in order to be done before the fall. We are going to temporarily relocate the staff from these spaces into the four new classrooms. This will happen this week because asbestos abatement will take place this coming weekend. Demolition will happen the following week. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
The construction team has been wonderful to work with all year and have assured us that the loudest parts of the project will happen before 8:00.
We will schedule a Ribbon Cutting and Tour closer to the start of school in August.
Last K-2 School Sing
The last open K-2nd grade Friday School Sing will be on May 31st.
HSS Art Project
Vermont Artist Mark Ragonese will be doing a residency at HSS from May 28- June 8 with all of the students at school during their art classes. We will be producing a large scale painted series of panels that will be permanently installed on the brick wall by the HSS Entry. Mark has created art work at the entry of Mt. Leb School and The Ray School as well as many others in NH and Vt. We are really looking forward to this colorful collaboration at our school.
If anyone would like to volunteer to help in the art room during this time period please contact Mrs. Cardillo to sign up. mcardillo@sau88.net

Community Garden News
Happy Spring! I’m excited to share the first HSS garden news of the 2024 season with you.
We were awarded a Grow More Good Grassroots Grant in March, and the funds were used to purchase hemlock lumber to replace our deteriorating old raised beds. I’ve included photos of this project, which YOU’RE ENCOURAGED TO JOIN THIS SATURDAY 5/18 by signing up here ! 3rd grade students have been diligently working during their recess time to remove perennial herbs and flowers from the old beds, before the build project. Thank you 3rd graders for your hard work!
Mrs. Russells’ class started started some veggie and flower seeds, which are germinating under our grow light, hosted this year in Mrs. Wurdaks’ room.

Healthy Snack Ideas
I hope you were able to try some new fruits and vegetables during our Every Healthy Kid Challenge Week. How many of you remember making ants on a log as a kid? Below is an idea for you to try.
Look what Mr. Ricky in the cafeteria is serving up to students. Be sure to ask your kids what new types of fruits and vegetables they get to try at school.
Sunscreen
As the weather is warming up and we are seeing more of the sun, please apply sunscreen on your children AT HOME. Staff at school are unable to apply sunscreen to students during the day. You may send in sunscreen with your child as long as it is lotion. Please avoid sending in spray sunscreen to school. Other options to consider in keeping kids protected from the sun include wide brimmed hats and sunglasses. Lastly, there are shady options always available to students during recess.
National Hand Hygiene Day: May 5th
We are doing an important experiment that is looking to see if handwashing really does help get rid of germs. Be sure to ask your kids about the bread outside my office. Our experiment started May 2 and will continue until the end of the school year. Stay tuned for pictures of our experiment in the next newsletter!
