Daily Health Checks
TEMPERATURE CHECK
Asking your child how they are feeling
Look at their face and eyes! This is the FIRST thing we look at when a child is sent to the nurse. Their little eyes will tell you how they are feeling way before symptoms often begin.
If they do not feel well, PLEASE do not send them to school. They can meet with their teacher virtually. If they feel better later in the morning, bring them on in!
Daily Mask Check!
Thanks for making sure they have several in their backpacks!
Negley Mission Statement
CAPTAIN CROWTHER'S CORNER
Ahoy Navigator Parents!
We had a great week of both virtual and in person school! Here are a few items that came up this week:
1. Is my in person student required to bring a device to school every day?
No. We asked students who had borrowed one of our devices for the first three weeks of virtual learning to bring those back if they were going to be an in person learner. That allows us to have devices at school for small group instruction or for learning stations. IF your child wants to bring their own device and you approve, they are allowed to do that. Please note: We are not responsible for any damage that may occur to a personal device while at school. So only send a personal device if you are ok with it.
2. Are in person learners just doing Schoology all day?
NO! Students who are in person are doing activities much like they have in the past while in the building. The teacher will have students do an activity on Schoology in their learning stations, or possibly once a week, just to keep them remembering how to log on to Schoology in case they go virtual.
3. If my child is ill for multiple days or has to quarantine at home for multiple days, how will they get their assignments?
Students who are out will be able to access their Schoology account for lessons. While students are at home, learning will be asynchronous. Assignments will be posted by their teacher(s) and students may complete them and turn them in. IF your child is sick - don't make them do their work until they are feeling better! We want them to take care of their physical needs first, then we can work on getting caught up with academic needs.
4. Can I bring food to my child from an outside source - ie: fast food?
No. According to the Hays CISD plan, outside food may not be brought in for students.
5. Are we allowed to bring in a treat for my child's birthday?
YES - IF they are prepackaged, individually wrapped treats. For now, Treats such as Little Debbie snack cakes, or Hostess CupCakes are perfect for our celebrations. You can also order treats through the cafeteria . You can call and order online thru the district website.
Make sure that there are no allergies in your child's classroom before bringing in birthday treats.
6. My child keeps telling me they need headphones at school, why?
YES!! Please send a pair of headphones to school in a zip lock bag with your students name and teacher name on them! We need them for their stations, when they go to the computer lab in the library AND when they go to their technology special area class with Ms. Rodriguez! We can't share because of Covid AND those pesky things called lice!
7. Where do I look to find my student's grades - Schoology or Parent Portal?
PARENT PORTAL!!! There may be grades in Schoology, but official grades will be the one's the teacher puts into TEAMS, which is the Parent Portal for Parents!
Have a wonderful weekend.

FOR OUR VIRTUAL PARENTS!
We cannot stress ENOUGH the importance of a distraction-free learning environment - or at least a distraction-reduced environment, at home. We understand how hard that is, but it is also very important. We want to make sure that they are as engaged and as focused on the material as possible. We know it's difficult and learning from home does pose some very unique challenges but we need to reiterate to them that, even though they're learning from home, they need to BEHAVE as if they were learning in a classroom at Negley. If it wouldn't be OK to do there, it's not OK do do here. 😊 We know it's tough - thank you for your support with this!
Learning at home and need lunch? You can get them for FREE at Kyle Elementary or Wallace Middle School
Students who are learning virtually at home can still enjoy breakfast and lunch for FREE. Visit https://www.hayscisd.net/eat .
And have you heard? FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH FOR ALL IN-PERSON STUDENTS Through DECEMBER!!!
OOPS! - Please do NOT put your water bottle in the dishwasher!
Virtual PTA meeting! Join us from the comfort of your home!
PTA was able to make a donation this week of $1,530 to Negley to cover Lexia licenses. This will help boost the reading fluency of our Navigators! We also hosted a breakfast for the Negley staff on Monday, the first day of in person school. Thank you to everyone that donated and helped make that happen!

If your family lives in any of the following situations:
Doubled up with friends or relatives, because you cannot find or afford housing, in a shelter, motel, campground, then, your preschool aged and school aged children have certain rights or protections under the McKinney-Vento Education Assistance Act. These rights include:
- The right to attend school, no matter where you live or how long you have lived there. Your child must be given access to the same public education, including preschool education, provided to other children.
- The right to continue attending the school last attended, if that is your choice.
- The right to receive the same special programs and services.
- The right to receive transportation to school, depending upon the situation and location.
If any of these apply to you, please reach out to Michelle Winn, counselor, McKinney Vento liaison. She will share other resources available to you that may include the following; school supplies, clothing, and meal service, etc…

Nuggets from Nurse Jill
Hello Navigators!
Congrats on a great first week of school! In the last newsletter I encouraged you to focus on eating a good breakfast each morning. This week I want to encourage you to keep up your immunity as we enter cold and flu season.
Here are some tips to keeping your immune system strong this school year.
- Get a good night’s sleep! You should be striving for 7-8 hours minimum of sleep each night, with 10 hours being the ultimate goal. Did you know your body and mind gets stronger and actually rebuilds itself during your sleep?! Pretty neat!
- Stay Hydrated! That means drink plenty of water. Remember to bring your water bottle and sip on it throughout the school day. Keeping your body hydrated fights off infection, dehydration that can lead to stomachaches and felling tired. Plus, you will just feel better overall! If you have conditions like Asthma or Migraine headaches, water can really help with these health concerns.
- Take your Vitamins and Probiotics! Always check with your pediatrician first before starting supplements but, adding these things to your daily routine will give your immune system a boost to build up your fighting cells and help keep you well. Probiotics increase your gut (tummy) health which plays a HUGE role in your overall health and helps decrease the chances of getting sick. So take care of your tummy!
- Wash your hands! Everyone has been doing a tremendous job of this at school! Keep up the great work!
I hope everyone has a healthy, safe and fantastic second week of school!

Library News from Ms. Tierney
Good news library friends! This week you will FINALLY get to check out books from the library! It will be different because you won’t be coming TO the library but for both in person and virtual students, I will be bringing library TO YOU!
Please read carefully because there are A LOT of details. Please give Mrs. Meyer and I grace as we do this because this is NEW! We are developing the system as we do it.
For virtual students, library lessons will continue on Schoology each week. “Curbside” library pick up will begin on Monday between 11-1. We will also have Curbside Fridays 3:30-4:30. Virtual students put books (up to 5) on hold for pick up. Here’s the link to the tutorial for putting books on hold. Parents will receive an email when the book is ready for pick up. Pick up will only happen during Curbside Hours, Mondays 11-1 and Fridays 3:30-4:30. Holds have to be placed by 8 am on pick up day in order for them to be ready that day. Holds placed after 8 am of pick up day will be ready on the next pick up day. All returned books will be quarantined for 72 hours to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
For in person students, library will take place once a week in the classroom beginning this week. Your classroom teacher will let you know your library day because library is not part of the specials rotation for this 9 weeks. You will not be able to come to library but I will bring library to their classroom. I will have a collection of books to choose from on a cart. This alink to the tutorial that shows how to hold books in Destiny Discover (the online catalog, also on the library website and on Schoology). This way they will be able to choose any book they want from our entire library collection. Books will be quarantined for 72 hours after they are returned to the library to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
In the meantime, check out the tutorials I created for you to borrow e-books and audiobooks using our OverDrive account. You can log in to that by using your student ID (lunch #) as your username and password. Also, you can read e-books (interactive books that can read to you) in Destiny Discover (our library catalog). I created a tutorial for that as well. Your login for Destiny is: username: student ID# (lunch #) and password is your last name (all lower case Stay tuned and keep reading!
You can always check out the library website for great resources as well. If you don’t have access to the grade level library lessons I will provide the access codes for each grade level below. Have a great week and you can always email me if you have any questions, Colleen.Tierney@hayscisd.net.

TRANSPORTATION TAGS
ALL FAMILIES WILL NEED A TRANSPORTATION TAG IF THEY WILL BE PICKING UP THEIR CHILD FROM CAMPUS.
These tags are super important for picking up your child at dismissal. Each family has a distinct number - it is your family number. Instead of calling out your child's name for all to hear, we call your family number. Each family will receive 2 cards and 3 round discs that need to be attached to your child's backpack. If you need extras for another adult that may be picking up your child , just let our Receptionist, Ms. Goodman know when she gives you your original. There will be a $1.00 charge for extra cards OR to replace a lost card after this initial pick up. This fee is to help us with replacement materials. So - the first ones are FREE, but later on there will be the small charge.
PLEASE EMAIL MS. GOODMAN TO SCHEDULE A TIME TO PICK UP YOUR TRANSPORTATION TAGS or STOP BY THE RECEPTION AREA.
If you are picking up your child in the car rider line, these tags can hang from your passenger side visor using a rubber band or from your rearview mirror. It makes it easy for us to see and call your number. If you do not have your car tag, you will be asked to drive to the front office and present your ID in order to pick up your child.
If you are walking to the school to pick up your child, you will need to show your tag to your child's teacher OR the teacher on duty. They will check the number on the card with the tag attached to your child's backpack before releasing your student to you.
