CTMS Family Newsletter

Wonderful Wolf Families,

It was great to see so many of our wolf families together on Tuesday night at our first PTA general meeting and mini-school night! We are looking forward to many more community building events. See the weekly calendar in the newsletter for other events to get together with the pack. Click here to see the presentation talked through with families during wolf Time.

Thank you for keeping our wolves safe during drop-off and dismissal by not using cell phones, following the traffic patterns, and watching for wolves walking and on wheels!

Looking forward to a wickedly wonderous week with the Wolf Pack!

Howl,

Jamie Halliburton

SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program Preview SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program Preview

Wednesday, September 3, 10:00am & 6:00pm

The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions—difficulty for youths, their parents, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression—which is treatable—is the leading risk factor for suicide. To proactively address these issues, GCISD offers depression awareness and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program. The SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program is designed for all secondary students grades 6-12. The GCISD School Health Advisory Committee has previewed and recommended these programs for all GCISD secondary schools.

A parent preview of the program will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at 10:00am & 6:00pm at the GCISD Administration Building – Board Room, 3051 Ira E. Woods, Grapevine, Texas 76051.

Students must have school counseling services consent form completed in Skyward in order to participate in guidance lessons. For more information, including information about how to opt your student out of the Signs of Suicide program, please click here: English Spanish

At Cross Timbers Middle School, student presentations will occur on September 15 (7th/8th) during 5th period and September 17(6th) during during pre athletics. Questions about SOS and CTMS students may be directed to Allyiah Daniels at allyiah.daniels@gcisd.net or (817) 251-5323.

Senate Bill 12 Requirements and Updates

Senate Bill 12, passed during the 89th Legislative session, requires school districts to obtain parent permission for student club participation as well as health services and school-based counseling and support services. It also contains requirements for sharing instructional plans and the prohibition of assisting with social transitioning. The new laws go into effect for the 2025-2026 school year. Families should review the information below and log into their student’s Skyward account to complete the pop-up permission forms.

Student Club Participation

SB 12 requires that parents give written consent before a student may participate in a student club authorized or sponsored by the school. School districts may not authorize or sponsor a student club based on sexual orientation or gender identity. All clubs authorized or sponsored by GCISD will be in accordance with all applicable laws and policies.

If a parent does not give general permission, they will be contacted about each individual club or activity for which their student expresses interest in attending. A paper permission form will be sent home and must be completed and returned to the school prior to the student being permitted to attend or participate in any club meetings.

Health Services

SB 12 requires that staff must have parent consent before providing a student with any care, unless it is a life-threatening emergency. This includes:

  • Assessment of minor injuries and providing basic first aid (like a scraped knee)

  • Assessment and management of common health issues and illnesses

  • Checking vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, and pulse oximetry

  • Monitoring chronic conditions and implementing care plans as appropriate

  • Provide general health teaching to students on topics such as hygiene, illness prevention, and healthy habits

  • Proving state mandated screenings

  • Administration of epinephrine delivery system for anaphylactic reaction or an opioid antagonist, such as Narcan or naloxone, in accordance with TEC and GCISD Board Policy

  • Application of topical preparations such as Aloe Vera gel, first aid spray, Benadryl cream, etc.

Additionally, you will find a full list of detailed services provided by GCISD campus nurses within the form in Skyward.

School-Based Counseling Services and Support Services

SB 12 requires that parents give permission prior to student participation in school-based counseling and support services. This includes setting academic goals and creating academic plans, guidance lessons, developing social well-being, and access to our character education curriculum, known as Character Strong.

What Support May Include:

  • Setting academic goals and creating academic plans

  • Developing social well-being

  • Checking in about emotions, challenges, or concerns

  • Learning coping strategies and managing stress

  • Addressing school-related issues (e.g., attendance, test anxiety, behavior, peer conflict)

  • Building friendship and conflict-resolution skills

  • Guidance lessons utilizing the Character Strong program

  • Participating in short-term individual or group sessions on school-related topics*

*Parents/guardians will be notified and asked for additional consent if individual or group counseling is recommended.

School Counseling Does Not Include:

  • Therapy or long-term mental health counseling

  • Assistance with social transitioning

Sharing Instructional Plans

SB 12 requires that teachers share an instructional plan or course syllabus with parents at the start of each semester. Teachers will email parents directly using email addresses provided in Skyward.

Prohibition of Assisting with Social Transitioning

SB 12 prohibits school district employees from assisting students with social transitioning, which includes helping them change their name, pronouns, or other expressions of gender identity that differ from their biological sex at birth.

Any applicable GCISD policies will be amended to be in alignment with state law.

Drop Off & Dismissal

Drop-off and pick-up occur in TWO locations: In the parking lot outside the academic halls at the B-hall door and outside the SAC. Thank you for waiting in carline and letting your wolf exit. It takes a few minutes to drop off and pick up over 800 wolves!

For the safety of all wolves, thank you in advance for driving slowly, keeping cell phones away, and staying alert and aware of others.

B-Hall Door

For drop-off and pick-up, the parking lot across from the football field is two lanes. Pull into the lane you will be exiting from, if you are turning right out of the parking lot, drop off and/or pick up your wolf in the inside lane (closest to the building) and if you are turning left out of the parking lot, drop off and/or pick up your wolf on the outside lane (closest to the football field). Also, please pull all the way up to let your wolf out of the vehicle. The doors to the school open at 7:45 a.m. and school dismisses at 3:35 p.m.

Personal Technology at School

House Bill 1481 prohibits the use of personal communication devices during the school day. Middle school students may use telecommunications devices before and after school. They may not use telecommunications devices during school hours except for their school issued devices.

What does this mean for the wolves?

  • Personal devices will be in bags, not on wolves, throughout the entire school day.
  • Families needing to relay messages can leave messages with the front office staff and office aides will deliver messages to classrooms.
  • Wolves needing to contact families can use the phone in the front office during passing periods and lunch or, when appropriate, in their classrooms.
