Superintendent's Update
May 22, 2026
Dear CCPS Families,
As we head into the final stretch of the school year, I want to take a moment to celebrate our students' incredible achievements and look ahead to the exciting weeks to come.
Our spring sports seasons are drawing to a close, and I want to wish the best of luck to our talented tennis and track athletes competing at the State Meets today and finishing up tomorrow.
We are also still celebrating the incredible success of last Thursday's Capstone Gallery Walk at Elkton High School. I was truly impressed by the innovation, dedication, and brilliant presentations from our students, and I extend my sincere thanks to everyone who came out to support them.
In addition to these achievements, I am thrilled to extend my warmest congratulations to the 41 outstanding CCPS students who have earned the Maryland Seal of Biliteracy. This prestigious honor recognizes students who have attained proficiency in two or more languages by graduation. Their hard work, dedication to linguistic excellence, and global mindset are commendable.
With just three weeks remaining in the school year, things are moving quickly. Graduation ceremonies begin next week as we honor the incredible Class of 2026, and schools across the district are gearing up for various end-of-year celebrations. Please be sure to check your child’s specific school newsletter so you don’t miss any of these important dates and wrap-up events.
Finally, I hope you enjoy a safe and restful Memorial Day weekend with your families.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our schools!
Sincerely,
Jeffrey A. Lawson, Ed.D.

Cecil County Agricultural Education Day Educates Over 1,100 Students
The Cecil County Agricultural Education Planning Association (CCAEPA) proudly hosted the annual Cecil County Agricultural Education Day at the Cecil County Fairgrounds on April 28th, 29th, and 30th. This impactful three-day event provided hands-on agricultural education to more than 1,100 seventh-grade students from across Cecil County.
The CCAEPA, the organizing body behind this successful event, is a collaborative partnership made up of representatives from Cecil Soil Conservation District, University of Maryland Extension - Cecil County, Cecil County Economic Development, Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation, Department of Natural Resources, Cecil County Public Schools and Blackbird Business Advisors. Together, these organizations work to promote agricultural literacy and awareness among local youth.
Students participated in a wide range of interactive sessions led by 30 knowledgeable presenters, covering topics such as land and water, animal science, food science, and agricultural technology. The event was made possible through the dedication of more than 70 volunteers who contributed their time and expertise to ensure a meaningful and engaging experience for all participants.
The CCAEPA extends sincere appreciation to its generous sponsors and supporters, including APGFCU, Cecil County Farm Bureau, Cecil County Economic Development, Smithfield, Gore, Bill and Phyllis Kilby, Morris & Ritchie Associates, R Brookes Mechanical, Upper Bay Ruritan, Upper Shore Regional Council, Hoober Inc., Atlantic Tractor, Choptank Electric, Land O’ Lakes, students from CCST Ag Science Program, and Decoy Bookstore. Their continued support plays a vital role in the success and growth of this educational initiative.
Cecil County Agricultural Education Day continues to inspire the next generation by connecting students with the importance of agriculture in their daily lives and future careers.

Celebrate America’s 250th with the "Off the Beaten Path" Challenge!
In celebration of the United States’ Semiquincentennial in 2026, the Historical Society of Cecil County invites you to join the "Off the Beaten Path" challenge, a county-wide adventure designed to uncover our local hidden treasures. In collaboration with local preservationists and government officials, the Society has curated a list of 27 historically significant sites—from well-known landmarks to tucked-away gems—to honor our nation's 250th anniversary. To participate, simply pick up a passport at any Cecil County Library branch, the Historical Society, Cecil County Tourism, or the Fair Hill Nature Center. Participants are encouraged to visit these sites and take a selfie at each location or marker as proof of their journey. Before heading out, adventurers are encouraged to check each site’s website for hours and potential entry fees, though all locations have been vetted for safe roadside pull-over areas.
This challenge is a fantastic way for families to engage with local heritage, featuring a special category for younger explorers; children under 14 who complete 14 visits will earn a Junior Historian Certificate and a gift. Completed passports and photo evidence must be submitted to the Historical Society at 135 East Main St., Elkton, by December 1, 2026, to be eligible for a prize. Submissions are accepted on Mondays and Thursdays from 10–4 and the first Saturday of every month from 10–2. Supported by local partners, including Cecil County Tourism and the Public Library, this event promises a year of discovery and community pride.
