Volleyball
zoom_out_map
This week I had the opportunity to pop in and see performances by our Middle School Soccer and Volleyball teams. I saw students clapping for each other, shouting encouragement, calling for the ball, and working together. They both took their performances personally yet demonstrated great sportsmanship. The center for the soccer team, David, and Ady, a key leader on the volleyball team, were both later recognized that evening at the Board meeting in the students spotlight for their leadership, work ethic, and academic performance. These students didn't simply start as great players in their sports, they didn't simply start as great students. They have worked hard each week and each year to grow, develop, and drive to be better. They've had conversations with teachers and coaches, worked through moments of self doubt, and found ways to be resilient and grow. The product is outstanding.

This is the story of Winfield 34. We are a unique place in which students get to try a great many things. Our students and staff are supportive of each other and encourage risk taking. When things are tough , they step up for each other and help each other persevere in the classroom, on the field, in front of the audience, or in the lab. This week I saw one of our second grade teachers, Mrs. Gavin, encouraging a former student of hers, a 5th grader now, to try some extracurriculars even though they may not start out as being good at it. That's Winfield. Supportive, encouraging, and caring. And our graduates remember. When one goes to the games, just like last Thursday. You see parents, you see students, and you see alumni, cheering on this generation of middle schoolers and remembering their turn a half-generation or generation ago.
