Dear Eagles,

Black History Month is a time for introspection and reflection on the struggles African-Americans have overcome, the progress we’ve made, and the ongoing fight for equality and justice. Our motto “Our history guides our future” readily comes to mind when I reflect on the contributions and achievements of our current students and Lindblom alumni of African-American and pan-African heritage.

Did you know that the first Black Student Union (BSU) was founded in March 1966 at San Francisco State University? The BSU formed as a result of the Black Campus Movement, which started near the end of the Civil Rights era, from 1965 to 1972.

This week, our very own Black Student Union is hosting our Black History Month Spirit Week. We hope you will participate! Once again, we invite you to help us highlight Lindblom students, staff, and alumni of African-American and pan-African heritage by submitting nominations via this form: https://tinyurl.com/LMSA-BHM

Our LDE Competition Dance Team (Kailee Jefferson, Kailyn Brown, Amiya Horton, Paityn Lanum, Daniyah Liggins, Imani Troutman, Sunyatta Johnson, Alyssa Gadson, Raven Scott, and Jordan Iman Taylor) has won the 2A Division City Championships!! This year we brought back LDE alum, Miss Lia Khan (Class of 2020) to come back home to Lindblom and LDE to help choreograph and coach. Seeing a former student of ours bring our current students across the finish line is what Lindblom is about!!

Kudos to students in the Chinese Culture Club, as well as those that assisted with making Chinese Culture Day an enriching experience.

Congratulations to our Wrestling Team! The team came in 3rd Place in the Regionals. Eight wrestlers made it to the 1 - 4 rounds and six wrestlers qualified for Sectionals. Josue Olivo is the champion!

The NAACP's Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. ACT-SO includes 33 competitions in STEM, humanities, business, and performing, visual and culinary arts.

Students of African descent who are U.S. citizens enrolled in grades 9-12 and are amateurs in the categories are eligible to participate.

The ACT-SO program is an enrichment program. Over the course of each year students work with local volunteer instructors and mentors to develop projects and participate in enrichment opportunities, including workshops, tutorials and field trips specific to their competitions.

The local ACT-SO competitions and ceremonies showcase the results of the students’ hard work. Competition winners receive medals and prizes, and local Gold Medalists advance to the national competition in Raleigh, NC July, 9-13, 2025 and have the opportunity to receive scholarships and other rewards provided by national sponsors.

Applications are being accepted through March 15th. We’d love for Lindblom high schoolers to be a part of this phenomenal program. Please contact us for additional information.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Bryan Hudson Chairperson, NAACP Chicago Southside Branch ACT-SO Program schiactso@gmail.com
