Mr. Kurzawski's notes
Some thoughts for the starting school year
Message From Mr. K
Dear Mesa Families,
We have completed our first week of school. Our students have been getting comfortable with the routines and procedures of their new classrooms. Students have been getting familiar with the lunch room. recess time and our hallway expectations. During this week, students started taking some standardized assessments so we can see what they have retained since last school year. We will use this data to see where the kids are at and how we can adjust instruction to support them.
Arrival and Routine Updates
Gates Open at 7:20 AM: Please note that our gates now open at 7:20 AM.
Independent Drop-Offs: Starting this week, we ask that parents say goodbye at the drop-off area and allow students to enter the side of the building to join walking program. This helps build independence and keeps our morning entry smooth and secure.
Curriculum Begins Monday: Academic instruction kicks into full gear this Monday! Please help your child get a good night’s rest and arrive on time so they don't miss out on important morning routines.
CELL PHONES AND DRESS CODE
· Cell Phone Policy: In alignment with Colorado state guidelines, WPS has adopted a new cell phone policy that prohibits cell phone use during the entire school day. The goal of this policy is to minimize distractions and keep our students fully engaged in their learning and connected with their peers. · Dress Code: Please take a moment to review our dress code guidelines in the Family Handbook to help ensure students come prepared for a safe and focused learning environment every day.

Family Connection: A Quick "BEST" Talk
As we kick off full academic routines, we encourage you to spend a few minutes talking with your child about what it means to be their BEST at school every day. Here is a quick guide you can go over together:
B – Body Posture: How we sit and stand shows we are ready to learn and listen. (Ask your child: "How do you show your teacher you're ready to listen?")
E – Engagement: Staying focused, asking questions, and participating in class activities. (Ask your child: "What was one thing you participated in today?")
S – Smart Choices: Making decisions that keep ourselves and others safe, respected, and happy. (Ask your child: "What is a smart choice you made on the playground or at lunch?")
T – Tone: Using kind, respectful voices with classmates, teachers, and staff. (Ask your child: "How can we use a kind tone when we disagree with someone?")
A Note About School Closure
As we begin this year, we want to address that the 2026–2027 school year marks the first of two final years before Mesa closes its doors. While transitions like this naturally bring a mix of emotions, our commitment to your children remains stronger than ever.
Over the next two years, our primary focus is to ensure that Mesa continues to be a warm, supportive, and academically vibrant environment. We are dedicated to celebrating our school’s rich legacy, maintaining our traditions, and providing the highest level of education and care for our students every single day. We will keep communication clear and open throughout this two-year process to support our families every step of the way.
