The 1-5-15 Bulletin's Purpose

The purpose of the 1-5-15 is to offer quick notes on relevant educational topics. My sincere hope is that whether you have 1, 5, or 15 minutes that this bulletin and the content within it will have an impact on you and your classroom. Furthermore, I hope that the topics shared spur further conversation with your scholars and colleagues.

Feel free to email me directly if you would like to talk more about a specific topic shared this week at robert.sahli@spps.org.

Enjoy!

1 Minute

"Much education today is monumentally ineffective. All too often we are giving young people cut flowers, when we should be teaching them to grow their own plants." ~ John W. Gardner (via @SeanAThom)

5 Minutes

We are going to take a step on the lighter side to be reminded of how to disagree with people. This may be a video that you want to share with your students. Maybe your staff needs to hear this?

All I know is that the 5 suggestions he makes to deal with a disagreement are good for all of us to hear!

Enjoy!

15 Minutes

A friend of mine (@perrywilk) recently shared a powerful and useful document with me about racism. I will allow the intro to the actual document speak for itself.

"The purpose of this race reporting guide is to serve as an accessible and concise tool for journalists and thought leaders in the United States talking about race, racism, and racial justice in the media. It aims to provide context and guidelines to inform reporting and language, and to encourage more conversation and understanding." ~Race Forward (2015)

This document, although long, is extremely useful for all educators. It forces us to look beyond individual racism and begin to address systematic racism. More importantly, it helps identify ways in which we can address systematic racism.
