5 Things to Know Weekly Update
August 26, 2024
Dear Colleagues,
Yay! The first day of school is here. I remember, way back when I was in elementary school in Connecticut, putting on my new school dress (all girls had to wear dresses back then 😕) and grabbing my new lunch box for the first day to meet my new teacher and start the next grade. Things have changed since then, but I’m betting our students are just as excited. Hopefully you are too – it’s going to be a good year. Since it’s an election year, we will have folks on campus signing students up to vote periodically, including the HB Friends of the Library this week – mention the opportunity to students if you can.

Flex Day last Friday was fantastic – although I am still cursing myself for not wearing college colors since the Chancellor, the Trustees and many of you were in green and/or gold! The energy was so positive that it seems we can move mountains together. So many thanks to Erin Craig, our OG Flex Coordinator, the Flex Committee, all the presenters and especially Ally Chaudry, Samantha Nguyen and Daniel Tswei, who made sure everything ran smoothly.
You will notice some signs outside the Student Union today, redirecting students to the Lounge for indoor seating – we are beginning the lighting/paint/stage removal part of the renovation project now. It will be open later this week. Also, Primo Nosh (which is now called something else – Blazing Kitchens) will open slowly this week, starting with coffee and limited service, as we get some new equipment into the cafeteria area. VP Hicks continues to look for other food/coffee options – stay tuned.
We have an art gallery opening this week: Persistent Iteration (August 30 – September 26). The opening reception is on August 30 from 4-6 p.m. and the Gallery is open Wednesday-Friday 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Here’s the description: Persistent Iteration is an art exhibition that explores the transformative power of repetitive action in art. Persistent Iteration features the work of a distinguished group of artists— Nathan Huff, Gretchen Jankowski, Michael Rey, Ana Rodriguez, Larry Rubin, and Gene Wyrick —who each explore the theme of repetition through various artistic mediums. This compelling exhibition examines how repeated actions, whether through brushstrokes, forms, or other techniques, can elevate the mundane into the extraordinary and infuse new meaning into the seemingly trivial. Guest curated by Matthew Ohm. Please come!
On Sunday, we sponsored the Taste of Huntington Beach event as part of our ongoing effort to increase the visibility of the college in the community – as always, Ben Olague, Danielle Mar and Andrea Rangno manned the information booth. And several managers also attended – even Danny Johnson, who was celebrating turning 40-something (I won’t tell unless he does).
Finally, I hate to confess that I will be away from Tuesday to Friday this week, which I would not do unless I trusted the VPs to keep everything running. 😊 My oldest sister turns 72 on Wednesday and I’ll be with her and family in Colorado. So catch me today if you need me – otherwise, see you next week.
