Community Update - Sept. 8, 2023
August 5th, 2023
Dear Syosset Community:
My first summer in Syosset ended with a sultry September start. I attended sweltering PTA meetings where parents implored me and the Board of Education to pursue air conditioning in our schools. I’ve never been as glad as this week that the Board and community invested in upgrading our facilities – particularly as I’ve been reading the news about students and staff struggling with the heat in other schools. The high school’s air conditioned gym and fitness center have salvaged sports practices, and our hard-working coaches and athletes have been arriving early and staying late to avoid practicing during the heat of the day. Thanks to all for your perseverance.
All that heat couldn’t wilt Syosset’s opening day excitement either. Our Seniors’ beloved first day tradition of greeting the sunrise from their reserved parking lot grew to include vehicles festooned with school spirit! I just love their creativity and Senior pride!
Also back to school were our Crossing Guards. Although they are Nassau County employees, they are an essential part of keeping our students (and parents!) safe. There have been shortages in recent years, which makes us appreciate our wonderful team all the more. Thank you!!
Music to my Ears 🎵
When I arrived in Syosset (this year was my 10th! summer), our community’s reputation as a fine and performing arts powerhouse was already well established, having won a Kennedy Center award in 2002. In the years since, we’ve only gotten better, so I’m delighted to announce that Syosset will receive NYSSMA’s “Presidential Citation Award” this coming December! The criteria involved an extensive review of concert recordings, school enrollment, ensemble rehearsal minutes, budgetary support, and curriculum – every detail imaginable. The award is so prestigious, no more than two of New York’s almost 700 school districts may receive this award in any given year, and in some years NYSSMA chooses not to bestow the award to anyone. Our talented staff and students are planning to savor this moment – no matter how much we continue to improve, as a winner, Syosset will not be eligible to apply for the award again until 2033!
And that’s not all. Also at the NYSSMA Winter Conference, an amazing 15 Syosset High School musicians who have been selected to perform in All-State Ensembles (and another 30! Syosset students were declared alternates). What a pitch-perfect way to kick off another amazing year of music in Syosset!
In the News 📰
All that music education has produced some extraordinary graduates. Newsday just celebrated Syosset alumni Idina Menzel and her sister, Cara Mentzel, who based characters in their new children’s book on their beloved Syosset teachers.
The book, titled “Proud Mouse,” features an elementary school teacher named Miss Pink, who is named for Menzel’s Baylis fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Pincus. The dedication also thanks Music teacher Mr. Roper, who gave Menzel her first ever opportunity on stage playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
Although both teachers have since passed, their remarkable impact on their former students' lives on.
(Funny note: A few years ago, Ms. Menzel returned for a visit to Syosset High School and snapped a quick photograph with me. When I showed it to my elementary-aged niece who couldn’t stop singing “Let It Go!,” she briefly thought I might be a celebrity too! Thanks, Idina!)
Off the Charts ⚽
Newsday released its list of top 100 boys and girls Soccer players to watch out for this season. No surprise, Syosset students feature prominently!
Two of our boys made the list. Senior Sawyer Wayne is known for being one of the best defenders on Long Island – and Junior Jack Pendrick, who has been a starter since his freshman year, one of the best midfielders.
Our girls roster is a powerhouse to be reckoned with – four of our seniors made Newsday’s list. Marley Altarac and Mikayla Camp, who are both committed to play at Emory University next Fall, Samantha Goldberg, who is committed to play at St. John’s University, and Brooke Barrie, who scored eight goals as a Junior last season.
I can’t wait to see this season unfold. Join me for a game sometime to cheer them on!

AP Biology teacher Carisa Steinberg achieved national recognition from the National Association for Biology Teachers (NABT) who granted her the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award. Ms. Steinberg was selected to speak at the NABT’s national conference in Baltimore with a presentation titled "Elevating Student Voice & Choice: Creating an NGSS - Aligned Project by Examining the Human Microbiome.” Ms. Steinberg was previously named a New York State Master Teacher, is a winner of the Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award, and has taken on teaching our brand new science course: College Anatomy and Physiology. Keep making us proud!
Keeping with this week’s music theme, South Woods Band Director Mandy Boonshaft was invited “down under” this summer to present at two international music education conferences. While in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, Ms. Boonshaft presented a session titled, “Expectations Without Limits: Helping Middle Level Bands Achieve Their Best.” This session was designed to give insights into the unique opportunities and challenges of teaching middle school band.

Bright Spot
The “bright spot” section started back when my early pandemic emails struck me as suffocatingly gloomy. Yet, our teachers and principals were telling me stories of amazing things our students were doing to make a difference despite the circumstances. Those stories cheered me up and I realized they could serve as a source of inspiration for an entire community during a difficult time. Since then, the Bright Spot has grown to encompass all of the amazing things happening in our remarkable learning community – each a #SoSyo moment where someone’s kindness or altruism makes our world a little brighter. The first week is always full of these moments–here’s one I’d love to share…
Kindergartener Hannah Meyer was a little nervous for her first day. Fourth grade neighbors Jacob and Jordan Ennis noticed – and made it a priority to help Hannah shake off the first day jitters at the bus stop. They chatted about her new teacher at Berry Hill, held her hand, and buckled her into her seat on the bus. Hannah’s mom captured my thoughts perfectly in a note she sent to her principal, Ms. Kolkhorst: “How amazing is it that we get to be a part of a community that helps one another without even asking?”
We are sure Hannah will pay it forward with a #SoSyo moment of her own someday. If I hear about it, I promise to share it with you on a distant Friday.
A member of my administrative cabinet this week observed that STRESSED is DESSERTS spelled backwards. Given this brisk first week, I hope your weekend at the end is as sweet as can be.
