Illness Update Illness Update

What we are seeing at Corinth this week (10/5-10/9):

Cold symptoms/allergies

Strep throat

Fevers

SMSD Illness Policy:

Please make sure to keep your child home if they have a fever of 100 degrees or more, vomiting, diarrhea, or just really not feeling well enough to be at school. Our policy is that they stay home for a full 24 hours after an episode of vomiting, diarrhea, or fever, without the use of medication before returning. You can see the official policy below (under SMSD Illness Policy Headline). Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Also, if you are able to notify me or front office staff if your child has tested positive for any type of respiratory virus or Strep throat, that really helps us know what is going on in the community. It's not a requirement by any means, but it allows me to help other families with students that are sick know how to better manage care.

***A phone call is how I will contact you regarding your child if they are sick or needing to go home. Please make sure to add my number to your contact list - (913) 993-2910***

Illness while at school
If a student becomes ill at school, they must come to the nurse. A parent/guardian must be contacted before students can leave the building. It is important to keep phone numbers updated so you may be reached in the event of an emergency.

To protect your student and prevent the spread of disease, please keep your student home when any of the following conditions are present:

  • Temperature of 100 degrees or greater
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe sore throat or pain with swallowing
  • Severe headache
  • Severe cough
  • Undiagnosed rash or skin lesions or sores that are weeping or draining
  • Any suspected or doctor-diagnosed contagious disease

Students may return to school when they have been free from fever (without medication), vomiting, or diarrhea for 24 hours and other symptoms are improving.

If in doubt about sending your child to school, contact the school nurse or your child's doctor.

Requirements for Enrollment

I am currently reviewing enrollment and health forms for the 2026-2027 school year. I will be contacting you if you have any missing documents by phone or email. So, please check your emails!

Written Proof of Immunization

  • Students enrolling in the Shawnee Mission School District for the first time must show written proof that they have received at least one dose of each of the immunizations required by the state of Kansas before they may attend any classes.
  • Students will have 60 days from their first day of school attendance to provide written proof from a physician or Health Department indicating the student has received the proper number of immunizations to meet the required state immunization laws.
  • If the requirements are not met within 60 days, the student will be excluded from school until written proof is provided. If it takes longer than 60 days to complete the immunization series, the student will not be excluded as long as there is written proof that the doses are given as soon as possible.
  • The two options to immunization accepted by the state of Kansas are: (1) A medical exemption signed by a physician every year, and (2) A religious exemption signed by a parent or guardian, stating the student is adherent to a religion which prohibits immunization.

Health History and Permit

  • At the time of initial enrollment every pupil up to the age of 9 (8 years and younger) shall be required to submit the results of a health assessment which shall have been conducted within 12 months of school entry or within 90 days after their first day of school attendance. The health assessment must be conducted by a physician or by a person acting under the direction of a physician.
  • If the physical exam is not completed within 90 days of the student’s first day of school attendance, the student will be excluded from school until the form is received. Physical forms are available from your school nurse, or forms from the doctor will be accepted.
  • A Health History and Permit form must be filled out and signed by a parent or guardian for all students enrolling in the Shawnee Mission School District for the first time. This form must be turned in on or before the student’s first day of school attendance. Additional health assessment reports shall again be submitted for each student at the beginning of the 4th grade, 7th grade, and 9th grade. The reports may be completed by either a parent or a guardian. A physician’s examination is recommended but not required.

Student Medication Student Medication

Medications

  • The Health Room is stocked with a limited supply of over the counter medications. An over the counter medication permission form must be on file for students to receive these medications. This written permission must be signed every year.
  • Prescription medicine must be sent to the school nurse in the original prescription bottle and come with a written note from a parent or guardian.
  • Any non-prescription medicine must be sent to the school nurse in the original container along with written permission from a parent or guardian. The written permission must be signed every year.
  • Students may be allowed to carry and self-administer asthma or anaphylaxis prevention medications, and diabetes medicine and supplies. Written permission from a physician and a parent needs to be on file with the school nurse and renewed every year.

Please contact me for more information or if you have questions or concerns.

Lice Lice

Lice is starting to circulate in Corinth. Please make sure to check your student's scalp/hair regularly. Make sure to teach them to avoid sharing hats and brushes and that they should not be having head-to-head contact with other students/friends in school. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Please know I cannot share specific grade level notices regarding lice.

Shawnee Mission School District head lice procedures
Routine screenings for head lice are not conducted. Notices about cases of lice are not sent home to protect student privacy. If you notice live lice on your child's head, please notify your school nurse. Prescription treatments are most effective and typically do not require an office visit. Contact your child's medical provider for additional guidance.

SMSD follows the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Center for Disease Control, and American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines.

E-Bicycle & Scooter Safety E-Bicycle & Scooter Safety

Given the recent safety issues regarding e-bike and e-scooter use, Prairie Village and other surrounding communities have updated safety ordinances. Please see the attached brochure per the Prairie Village Police.

Biggest take aways:

- Many of the e-bikes and e-scooters look the same. Make sure you know what you're buying for your child. Class 3 e-bikes/scooters have a maximum speed of 28mph and are REQUIRED to be driven on the roadway and by an operator who is 16 years of age or older.

- Any type of moped, off-road e-bike, or anything else that travels greater than 30mph (or more than 49cc's) is illegal to drive on the sidewalk and these devices often require a driver's license and registration.

- E-bike and e-scooter operators are REQUIRED to wear a helmet under the age of 18 years.
