Principal's Message
Parent involvement is very important. We have many ways for parents to be involved on campus.
Classroom or Event Volunteers
Many parents like to work in classrooms or at the student store. If you are volunteering for the classroom or PTC, there is paperwork that must be completed prior to helping on campus. Teachers who have volunteers will work with the office to make sure all paperwork is in order.
Parent Teacher Community Club (PTC)
Our PTC works hard to support school events and fundraise money that benefits students at Walter Woodward. PTC meetings and events can be found in our Important Dates to Remember section of this newsletter. If you would like to get involved or have any questions, Maria Beccera (PTC President) can be reached at president@woodwardptc.com
English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)
This committee is made up of administration and parents of English Learners. This committee meets several times a year to discuss schoolwide programs and how to best support our English Learners. Reach out to Mr. Correia for more information at ccorreia@musd.net
School Site Council (SSC)
The SSC decides upon academic instructional programs and all related categorical resource expenditures for a school. SSC is a school-community representative body made up of the Principal, Teachers, Other School Personnel, and Parents or Community Members. To become involved with the SCC you must be nominated for the position. Nominations and voting will take place in August.
Positive Behavior Intervention & Support (PBIS)
Our PBIS program is an integral part of creating a safe, responsible, and respectful environment on our school campus. To strengthen our efforts and foster a collaboration, we are currently seeking dedicated parents to join us in supporting this important initiative for the 2025-2026 school year. If you are interested in joining the team, please reach out to Mr. Correia at ccorreia@musd.net
Arrival & Dismissal Reminders- Student Safety is our Top Priority
Student safety is our top priority. Arrival and dismissal times are extremely busy at the school site.
Campus supervision begins at 7:45. Please do not have students on campus before this time.
All students should be pick up at dismissal within 15 minutes of dismissal time.
TK -2nd grade students will need to be picked up near the 500 wing in the main parking lot.
3rd - 8th grade students will be dismissed from their classrooms.
There are 2 locations for arrival and dismissal. Students may enter or exit onto Tannehill through the side gate or through the main parking lot on Sundance. In the main parking lot parents may park and walk up to get their student or they may stay in their car and go through the pick-up/drop-off line. Parents may not get out of their cars in this line as it creates a safety hazard and blocks traffic. Students must enter the car from the sidewalk (passenger's side). At no time should students be walking into the parking lot unless with an adult using the designated crosswalks.
In order to keep all pedestrians safe please remember:
- Drive slowly and watch for students walking.
- Do not use your cell phone while driving. The less distractions the better.
- Stop and follow crossing guard's directions.
- Use cross walks at all times.
Other Parking Lot Reminders:
When picking up from dismissal, please arrive no more than 5 minutes before the bell. As this is causing traffic to back up into the street.
August 6th is the first day of school!

Ms. Schluer, 2nd Grade Teacher
Hello Woodward families! My name is Lela Schluer, and I am excited to join the Walter Woodward team as a second-grade teacher this year. I recently graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and am thrilled to begin my teaching career back home in Manteca, the community where I grew up and that has played such an important role in shaping who I am today. Teaching has always been a passion of mine, and I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community that invested so much in me throughout my childhood. My goal is to create a classroom where students feel welcomed, supported, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential while fostering a love of learning that lasts beyond the school year. I look forward to building strong relationships with students and families, creating meaningful memories, and helping each child grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, being involved in the community, and cheering on Alabama athletics. I am honored to be part of the Woodward family and cannot wait for an amazing year together!
Ms. Chavarria, 6th Grade Teacher
Hello Woodward Families! It is an honor to introduce myself as your new 6th-grade teacher! My name is Danai Chavarria, and I am excited to begin my first year of teaching at Walter Woodward Elementary. I recently graduated from Stanislaus State University with a degree in Liberal Studies and a concentration in TESOL, and I am proud to be a participant in the Teachers College of San Joaquin program. I have dreamed of becoming a teacher since I was in 6th grade, so this opportunity is especially meaningful to me. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy staying active, playing soccer, and spending time with family and friends. I am also bilingual and speak both English and Spanish. I look forward to getting to know my students, partnering with families, and creating a positive and engaging learning environment where everyone can grow and take risks! I can't wait for an amazing school year together!
Ms. Alarcon, 6th Grade Teacher
Hello Woodward families! My name is Michelle Alarcon, and I am excited to join the Woodward Elementary team as a 6th-grade teacher this year. This is my first year as a classroom teacher, and I am thrilled to begin my teaching career at Walter Woodward Elementary School. I was born and raised in California’s Central Valley and recently graduated from California State University, Fresno, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with a BCLAD authorization in Spanish. My goal as a teacher is to create a safe, welcoming, and positive classroom where all students feel supported, valued, and encouraged to do their best. I am excited to get to know each of my students and their families and look forward to a wonderful year of learning, growth, and success together!
Ms. Cabral, 8th Grade Math & Science
Hi! My name is Hailey Cabral. I am so excited to begin my teaching career as an 8th grade math and science teacher here at Walter Woodward this year! I was born and raised in Oakdale, where I graduated high school and worked multiple jobs while completing college. In 2023 I graduated from Modesto Junior College with my A.A in Elementary Education and from CSU Stanislaus with my B.A in Liberal Studies three years later. This year I completed the credential program at CSU Stanislaus, earning my multiple subject credentials. My dream has always been to be a teacher and to change the world one student at a time, and I am so excited to finally start this journey! In my free time I love to go hiking, camping, and relaxing at the beach. On a regular day at home, you can catch me in the kitchen cooking up a new recipe while talking to my cats or watching a movie and playing a board game with my boyfriend. I feel so lucky to be joining this amazing community and looking forward to getting to know everyone!
