Our inboxes can become UNRULY, maybe even rule us.

Professionals devote over a quarter of their workday to email, spending roughly 2.6 hours reading and responding to around 120 messages daily, a McKinsey analysis revealed.

Teachers might spend a little less than the average 9-5'er, but still, we can be doing much more meaningful work through in-person communication and discussing because, ya know, you might be a slow typer like I am or can't always find the right word.

Try some of these tips and trick to make your email life easier!

Archive or delete? Archive or delete?

The difference between archive and delete in Gmail is that your deleted email will disappear from your mailbox after thirty days. Gmail archive instead of delete means you can retrieve an email whenever you want.

If you archive it, you can find it in your All Mail folder, which can be done by uncollapsing the More menu in your Gmail on the left.

Filter your inbox! Filter your inbox!

There are some emails that I want to automatically sort into a folder so I don't lose, like ones from my HR person, some I don't want to see at the moment, like marketing emails, and some I don't need to see at all like a standard mass email or something I can't unsubscribe from.

For those instances, you need to set up a filter!

Label and store if you must! Label and store if you must!

Setting up labels is simple inside Gmail. It's helpful when you need to keep track of communication from parents or administration.

One strategy is to set it up yearly to easily track what you need to refer back to inside the label.

However, only some things need a label or to be kept (archiving is always a quick option versus labeling), but click here to learn how to set up your own labeling system.

Clean out the dust (or the emails you've been ignoring for years) Clean out the dust (or the emails you've been ignoring for years)

More likely than not, each email has a shelf life, and we don't need the ones from three years ago.

However, you may feel stuck on where you might start and how you might accomplish clearing out those thousands of emails.

Filtering is your friend.

If it frightens you to do so, fire me an email (odd in this context), and I'll walk you through it and other questions you might have!

Gmail can do that?! Quick tips and tricks Gmail can do that?! Quick tips and tricks

Gmail has some great tips and native tricks for productivity and efficiency.

Here are some of my favorites!

  • Appointment Schedules have been a great addition to Google Calendar, and now you can set up a meeting schedule right inside of Gmail without leaving the platform, eliminating the need for a back-and-forth about when you can meet. Check out how to use it here!
  • Gmail has newsletter layout templates built inside of it! You can easily create a visually engaging email without needing another service. See how you can here!
  • Most of us have our email on our phones. Sadly, a lot of us work outside of work hours. Save the other folks, and schedule that email for the morning. Check out how here! I'm also a fan of this when I need to send something out on a particular day, like an update to other folks, or when I want to hit inboxes when folks are first checking,
  • It is often much simpler to type in Docs than in the small Gmail window. Using Building Block built into Docs, you can quickly draft your email on a large canvas and send it from there. See how you can by clicking here!
