7th Grade English
Students in Mr. Federinko’s English Language Arts class celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. beyond his Day of Service this past Monday. For the past several weeks, students explored what makes language inspiring, examining poetry and speeches for poetic and performance techniques. This learning culminated in an informative piece highlighting the techniques Dr. King used in his most famous speech. The following was written by 7th Grader Tommy Maertzig:
In his “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. inspires people to fight for their own freedom and equality. Toward the middle of his speech, Dr. King mentions a quote from the Bible, and he uses it as a simile. Dr. King says, “No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until ‘justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.’” This quote shows King using a simile that compares justice and righteousness to waters which concludes one of his smaller points in his speech. He uses the simile to show his extreme anger towards the unfairness surrounding African Americans’ rights. He uses this comparison to show how he wants justice and righteousness to be a normal thing, common and not stopping. It inspires people to fight for equal rights so it is normal, not something only believed in. Furthermore, Dr. King also uses repetition in his speech to inspire people. He repeats words many times, most notably the words “I have a dream.” In his speech, he says, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are equal.’ I have a dream that one day in the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down at the table of brotherhood.” This quote shows Dr. King stating some of his many hopes for the future. He repeats the words “I have a dream” at the start of each paragraph to intensify his words. Each time he repeats “I have a dream,” it is focused and therefore emphasized more and more each time he says them. It inspires people to get their rights by explaining what the world can be, which is what his audience wants, which gets the people excited and makes them follow their dreams. At the same part of his speech, Dr. King changes his voice’s speed and intensity. At the middle of the paragraph, he is speaking loudly, but somewhat slowly. However, each time he repeats “I have a dream,” he speaks louder, which makes him sound more powerful and more inspiring. By the end of the speech, he is practically screaming, which excites the entire audience. Because his speech is louder, more powerful and faster, it is more inspiring. In conclusion, Dr. Martin Luther King’s most famous speech inspires people by using repetition, similes and increasing volume and speed.
6th Grade Art
Mrs. Schenfelt's sixth grade classes have successfully completed their drawing unit, where they mastered foundational skills in using simple shapes and lines to draw complicated subjects. The curriculum included lessons on various shading techniques, including stippling, and emphasized accurate color matching. This unit brought together a variety of artistic skills, offering a valuable tool kit for the students.

WIDA Testing
Hello LCMS Families:
Beginning on January 5, 2026, the Centennial School District will begin the annual WIDA ACCESS (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State) testing window for our English Learners (ELs). The WIDA ACCESS is a PDE mandated and federally reported assessment of English Language Proficiency (ELP). The families of our English learners will receive an email communication regarding the assessment from our Supervisor of Student Services, Althea Tomlinson.
Our school testing dates are: 1/26/26-2/13/26
The WIDA ACCESS assessment is an important tool that guides the individualized instruction of our English learners. If you have any questions about the assessment, you can reach out directly to your child’s English Language Development (ELD) teacher.
If your child is an English Learner, here are some things you can do to help your child prepare for the WIDA ACCESS:
Be sure your child/children are receiving an adequate amount of sleep during the testing dates
Be sure your child/children eat breakfast each morning before testing
Be sure your child/children bring their school issued electronic device fully charged to school every day
Encourage your child do their very best on the assessment
The GIANT Company, Round Up For Hunger
Centennial School District is proud to participate in the GIANT Feeding School Kids campaign!
