Dear OUSD Staff and Families,

Our country continues to face senseless acts of violence, and we acknowledge the traumatic impact these acts can have on families and communities. As public school educators, we never take lightly the trust you place in us with your children, particularly as we all continue to make sense of some of the horrific acts we see in the news and on social media.

At Orange Unified, our unwavering commitment is to provide safe and welcoming learning environments for every child. All means all is not a slogan here—it is part of our culture. We work every day to ensure that all students and staff can learn and work in safe and inclusive school environments.

Central to this commitment is honoring the value of every person, seeing the humanity in all, and practicing civility in our interactions. These values are equally important for our students and employees, and guide how we teach, how we lead, and how we support one another as a community.

We recognize that schools are places where students learn not only academics, but also how to engage in respectful dialogue and responsible expression. Our own Board policy is in place to ensure that this expression does not “incite students” in ways that promote the violation of school rules or create unsafe conditions.

In OUSD, we strive to balance the important protections of free speech with our responsibility to maintain learning environments that are safe and foster a sense of belonging. Both are essential, and we believe we can hold them together in ways that best serve our students, employees, and community.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we work to make Orange Unified a place where every child feels safe, respected, and inspired to learn—together!

Sincerely,

Rachel H. Monárrez, PhD
Superintendent of Schools, Orange Unified School District
